Personality: Once happy and carefree, Clarity seems grossly changed. She no longer smiles at trivial matters, life is far from trivial and though she was very nearly a victim, she survived. Now to the world she appears aloof to the point of arrogance, moody and introspective. There’s only one she trusts, one she keeps counsel with and one she would kill for, her best friend in everything.
A little Deeper:
Early years:
The Maxwell family lived for centuries in Broxton, just outside of Salem. They were well respected and extremely wealthy. Clarity grew up with the proverbial silver spoon in her mouth. She was always popular among her peers, an extrovert with fierce enthusiasm and passion for anything she was interested in. She dreamed of being Captain of the cheerleading squad and prom queen just like her mother had been and as far as she was concerned her life seemed set in stone. She would one day marry the town quarterback and have 2.5 children, a dog and a large house with all the latest modcons. Her father, the owner of the towns most profitable bank indulged her every whim. She was his youngest daughter, his princess and thought it his right to pamper her as such. Her mother treated her more as a friend, intent on reliving her own glory days through Clarity, while her twin brothers Silas and Pitch adored her and were extremely protective of her. All in all she had a good life, a brilliant life. A life that was the envy of everyone else.
The Present:
The mass recession that destroyed her fathers bank, also destroyed her father. After declaring bankruptcy he took his own life, only to leave his family behind in absolute torment. Many of course presumed they were distraught only because they were now effectively poor but this was not altogether true. They were a close family, a tight knit clannish family. With his death, his wife Wilhelmina decided to take her family far away to start a new life. They moved to England, to London where she was certain that she could get a job and where her children could attend respectable schools. She was ten years old and seemed morbidly depressed all the time, her fathers death had hit her hard, she could not grasp his absence from her life. She attended junior school but Clarity cared little for the subjects that had once enthralled her. However, during the summer of that same year, her mother decided a trip to the beach was what they all needed. They drove for what seemed like days though in fact it was hours, the day itself was glorious and they spent it like a proper family once again. Even Clarity was seen to be smiling. On the journey home however, the car suddenly ground to a halt, the temperature dropped considerably and terror filled the air.
Clarity remembers only sheer panic from that night, screams that rent the air and that haunt her relentlessly. Her mother and brothers were torn from the car and drained of their souls before her very eyes but as a Dementor reached for her a pendant that she had worn for as long as she could remember seemed to shimmer suddenly, growing brighter as the thing tried to reach her.
It seemed to look closely at the girl before looking at those drained upon the ground and to Clarity’s surprise he left her alone, they all did. Left alone Clarity wept bitterly before passing out. She was found by the auror Bedlam Vandal and the Unspeakable Terence Forest. Clarity had up until that moment not known anything about the world of magic.
Taken to St. Mungos where her brothers and mother were to remain in care until their eventual death months later, Clarity spoke to no-one of the nightmare she encountered or the grief she had been living through before that. She refused to be a victim and slowly over the course of a year she had changed into an introverted sullen young woman. Aided by the letter she had received from the Junior Wizarding Academy. For years she had thought herself slightly psychic and gifted, never dreaming it could be because she was a witch.
She attended the wizarding school at the ministry while staying with Bedlam Vandal until she could be sent to a proper orphanage. Bedlam felt responsible for her somehow and knew there was more to this child than met the eye. Her husband was delighted with the addition to their family and urged his wife to foster the girl with intent to adopt her. Clarity thought he was mad and had no problem in informing him that her mother was still very much alive.
At the JWA, she met other wizarding children but tolerated none of them. She became the brunt of jokes because of her accent until one boy stood up for her. It was not long until they became friends and ultimately the best of friends. Yet, by day she had one guise while by night, in the secret she trained herself to fight, to kill. In her view she did not trust that magic could help her and as she had lived a muggle life all her life till that night, she believed that training like this could and would help her. In between the day and night there are the moments where she must sleep however and it is then she hears this Dementors breathing, never sees his face or any of their faces and she was much too frightened to look directly upon him, but she feels the cold, the frigid cold that his kiss could do to her soul and wakes up screaming.
By the end of her first year at JWA, she is the only Maxwell living and Bedlam begins adoption proceedings early the following year. Clarity is clever, she does well in her subjects and divulges to her best friend what she does in her spare time. It is when she gets her Hogwarts letter and goes for her wand that she finally feels safe at last. That she finally has some power to defeat the things that took the rest of her family from her. She is not quite as sullen as she used to be, her adoptive family are good to her, she trusts them, but does not dare love them for everyone she loves leaves her and in the most horrid of ways. This is reinforced when DeathEaters in hiding since the demise of Voldemort, strike at Bedlams' husband and kill him because of her. Clarity feels as if she is about to spiral out of control but it is her one true friendship that prevents her. Though she cannot bare to feel anything for her best friend, he is the only one in the world she knows she could ever really care about. Happiness is what the Dementors feed on, hope and happiness. She wants to give them neither when they come again for her and she is certain they will.
Unknown history that will be revealed in game:
the amber necklace holds the essence of her great-grandmothers last cast patronus, hence why the Dementor shied from it. Her great-great-grandmother was Sharon Petkin a formidable witch once upon a time in Salem but thanks to the witch trials put her wand away and chose to live the life of a muggle until the ‘danger’ past. While it past however, she met and fell in love with Darren Maxwelle and on having children and producing squibs, Sharon put aside her magic forever. No generation had any magic until Clarity was born.
