Character's Birthdate: September 1st 1947

Hometown: Tinworth, Cornwall.

Blood Status: Half blood

Patronus: hare

Wand:

Ebony wood 11 inches with core of kelpie hair

Ebony is a fine-quality, rather costly dark wood that is hard and durable. It also carries a beautiful black luster when polished, radiating a certain air of cold-shouldered class and expensive taste. This wand-holder is usually rather stubborn and shuns outsiders, remaining rather secretive of their core being. They also tend to be natural born leaders, commanding respect even if grudgingly. Ebony is the most powerful wood used in wands, and can give the user what may seem to be unlimited power.

Kelpie Hair comes from the mane of a Kelpie, a water demon commonly found in Britton and Ireland, who often takes the shape of a horse. The most famous Kelpie is referred to by Muggles as the Loch Ness monster. Kelpie's are adaptable creatures, and thus the wand is a good core for most types of magic, but especially water magic.

A Little Deeper

Personality:

  • Strong minded - though some may say stubborn, Beatrice has invariably always known her own mind and sticks to her 'wands' when she knows she is right.
  • Patient - one of her finer qualities, Beatrice is quite possibly one of the most patient person at the school.
  • Tolerant - to a fault of other people and magical beings. Dislikes racism intensely and has come up against the head of the Department for Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures once too often in relation to a few of her students over the years.

History:

Born in 1949 to half-blood Henrietta Smult and pure blood Turloch Selvridge, Beatrice grew up in the quiet wizarding Devon town of Tinworth. Her Irish father a regular supporter of the Kildare Kestrel's introduced his daughter to the game early, one of her earliest memories is hovering a few feet from the ground on her toy broomstick that her father had bought for her at one of the games.

She was thrilled to recieve her Hogwarts letter, both her parents had been Gryffindor so she always assumed that would be her house too. It was only when the hat was placed on her head that she felt a doubt creep in but it was to be the last doubt she ever had again in her time at Hogwarts. A confident, mature young woman she excelled at her subjects finding a natural aptitude for some while others she had to work exceedingly hard at.

She took nothing for granted and was thrilled to secure a place on the Gryffindor Quidditch team as a chaser. Her mother, a gentle woman disliked the game intently and only kept quiet about her fears regarding her daughter playing the dangerous sport, because she knew how close a bond it had knit between her husband and daughter. In her second game, Gryffindor were playing against Slytherin and were in the lead as far as scores when chaos broke out. The snitch blazoned through the formation of chasers as they passed the quaffle between them. A bludger was hit, the seekers zoomed through. Chasers dived and spiraled out of the way and made attempts to get the quaffle back in their possession. Bea's broom shaft was hit by the bludger, the force upturning it and sending it's rider careening into the middle goal hoop.

Falling a great distance, she broke an arm and leg and on waking in the hospital under the influence of skelegro which was gradually knitting her bones back together, Beatrice thought long and hard about the type of career she actually wanted. Steeling herself to break her fathers heart, she reveled her pursuit in life was in education and not in professional quidditch.

In her fifth year she was made prefect and took her role seriously. She passed her OWLs with all Outstanding grades, bar one Acceptable in potions. Disgusted she vouched to try harder for her NEWTs. She was made Head Girl in her final year 1966. The Yule Ball of that year, saw her asked by a few young men one being a boy almost four years her junior. She refused and attended with one of her own year but had the grace and courtesy to give each of the three boys she had refused, the opportunity of a dance at the ball. Vincent Proudmane had spent most of that year flirting with her shamelessly but she took it all and him with a fine grain of salt. She graduated in 1967 with five Outstandings and two Acceptables.

That summer she traveled Europe to broaden her experiences recieving an owl from her father while she was in Paris telling her all about the latest broom on the market known as the Nimbus 1000. She merely smiled to herself knowing what her father was up to, but her own mind was set. It was while she was in France that she met with two of the professors at the Beauxbatons academy and decided to apply for her teacher training at its prestigous school. She spent four hard but worthwhile years training there but it was in this time that the Dark Lord was rising and it was being felt even in the rest of Europe.

She returned to England when her father was taken gravely ill and succeeded in gaining a junior position in the Ministry of Education. Britain was a far different place to the one she had left behind, it was not safe to trust any one and in the chaos that became their lives, Beatrice met up with Vincent Proudmane once again. He was now a man, more charming than ever before but it was this she clung to for the first time in her life. He displayed a strength and vitality that she needed to surround herself with and soon found herself besotted by the man, so much so that they married in 1979.

Talyn was born to them in 1981, so many horrible things were happening that Talyn's birth seemed the light that they both needed. Many couples were marrying hastily in those days never knowing if they would live another day or not. Unfortunately marrying in haste was never going to succeed for every couple and almost ten years after they married, Beatrice and Vincent divorced due to irreconcilable differences.

Beatrice moved back to Tinworth to her family home, both her parents having been killed during the first Wizarding War, she thought it only right to raise her daughter in the beautiful coastal town she had known so much peace in as a child. With the end of the war and the supposed death of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, it seemed the idyllic location. Beatrice worked continuously at the ministry until her own daughter attended Hogwarts and the Boy-Who-Lived attended as well, albeit a year ahead. It seemed a cold stark reminder of the times they had all barely lived through. It was not long however before rumours of Voldemorts rise abounded yet again and many were divided as to believing the ministry or believing a young boy.

Beatrice had faith in Dumbledore and though she worked for the Ministry, she listened closely to every thing her daughter told her on vacation times. She was inclined to believe whatever Harry Potter said in regards the Dark Lords return, no matter how fantastical it seemed. She hated to be proved right in this instance as the Second Wizarding War erupted and her own daughter was put in danger while at the school. With the demise of Voldemort eventually in 1998 by Harry Potter himself, the school closed down for repairs and the ministry had some serious changes of its own to make.

She was sent to Hogwarts to take on the role of Head Mistress when Minerva McGonagall opted to stay with the younger students being taught at the ministry. It was with pride that she took the role and with equal pride she watched her ex-husband become the Minister of Magic. The only time she felt more elated was when their daughter Talyn graduated from her teacher training and took up a post at Hogwarts, only to become potions professor and subsequently the Gryffindor Head of House.

Fenton Selvridge was not at all happy with his youngest son marrying a half blood, he had nothing against the woman herself but it was known that there was a squib in her family and that Henrietta's only brother had married a muggle born. He saw the Smult family has nothing but a huge blemish on the wizarding world and threatened his son and his inheritance if he did not give up Henrietta and return home. He chose love of course.

Angered greatly it is rumoured that Fenton ordered his other son to 'take care' of the squib, in the hopes that this would bring Turloch to his senses. Whatever transpired is now all circumstantial, all that was found however was the body of Genevieve, as no evidence remained of how she was died it is believed the 'Avada Kadavra' curse was the last thing she heard.

Turloch believed his brother capable of this heinous crime and tried his best to keep Henrietta save, she was pregnant with their daughter at the time. The news of their wedding and baby eventually reached Fenton who apparantly blasted a hole in the wall of their gallery is his haste to remove Turloch from the family tree. He was never mentioned in the Selvridge home again.

Padraig was killed by the auror Douglas Hilt during a duel, Hilt maintained on record that he was given information indicating that Padraig Selvridge was a known felon and murderer and went to arrest the man, a duel ensued as Padraig had no intention of being taken quietly and was killed as a result. Douglas Hilt had also loved Genevieve Smult since he was seven years old.

As much as Regina and Oliver Smult loved their new son-in-law Fenton, they did believe that he had brought serious bad luck to their family. Henrietta and Fenton moved from Kilkenny, Ireland to Tinworth, England to raise their daughter. Believing that the move would do them both the world of good. Bryant moved to England as well with his wife Cathy, none foreseeing the troubles that were soon to brew and further agonies they would have to bear.
