About the video game aspect, would something along this idea work? Just tossing this out there to see if it's what you're looking for or not.
There are 2 IC threads. IC thread A is about your character on an adventure. IC thread B is about a guy, a student perhaps, who just bought himself an ERPG and is installing it on his PC, ready to play the game.
Thread A would "freeze" every now and then, at which time thread B reaches an option in the game where the player can make a choice. The GM will post a few options, and the player will have to pick one. Thread A would then "unfreeze" and your character would continue, in line with the chosen option.
Options would be general in nature, as detailed options would turn the game into a mind control one. For example, if your character would notice a monster, the player's options would be "Talk", "Fight", "Hide" and "Flee". The player would make one option, and your character would follow that option, but how exactly would be up to you.
For the "player", we could either go with a specific person playing the player character, allow anyone to post on a first come, first serve base, or allow anyone to post and go with the most votes after say 24 hours.
That armor isn't really protective, after all...
Considering your character is part of a video game, I'd say that definitely counts as protection!
