About that telegram - you have to be very wary of confirmation bias.

Acanthus: "Mr. Obama, may I be so bold to inquire the top-secrets of Area 51? I promise I wont tell anyone."

Mr. Obama: "Sure, Gabriel, no problem. The truth is that we made Area 51 to keep everyone away from the real secret alien location, Area 52~"

Acanthus: "The clarification is admirable..."

Mr. Obama: "Indeed."

And there you have it.  ::)

That ones been thrown out there before... they faked the Roswell incident and took back the statements on purpose to keep attention away from a real crash.

I think Acanthus' theory is probably closest to the truth - there may have been secret stuff (though probably not involving aliens) going on there in the past, but now they just keep up the pretence and the mystique to stop people paying too much attention to what's going on elsewhere like Dugway Proving Ground

Oh, and the moon landings were faked on a sound stage. It's just that the soundstage was on Mars.

Or this theory:

Didn't they also use Groom Lake to test captured Soviet and Warsaw Pact aircraft? Just saying, is all.
