Star Wars: Old Republic

This long expected MMO is supposed released in spring, I myself I am lot hyped about it as so far none Bioware games had left me cold. I am sure game will be nice to play through but does it work as MMO? Meaning you have constant fun and playtime at max level and gear.

I like what I've seen so far. I'll be trading WoW for this.

Do not know for certain. Know there are class quests (which take minority) and then lots soloable quests and then group quests. I guess (entirely guessing) in end there are 4-5 man content areas (instances/raids). So far as I know it does not have 10/25 man raids but more 4 man epic long quests likely.

I have high hopes for this game. It seems like the first MMO in a long time to offer something legitimately fresh in terms of gameplay.

Edit: Make that second. But the one that appeals the most to me.

Two words had me worried for a long while. Jedi. Wizard.

Apparently it's a prestige class of the Jedi Counsellor. I'm of a 'wait and see' mind after my encounter with the combat 'upgrade' for the original SW MMO. As a crafter going from 'wander most of tattoine to mine to 'Need 4 man escort to get out of sight of Mos Eisley'.

From crafting side the player himself no longer gathers mats nor materials.....but his companions do it for him. Also companions can be used replacement for a healer or tank incase of some mission or two (but their not perfect likely but workable most scenarios).

What I know about Jedi/Sith counselor is that he is split up between either to be DPS or healer in advanced class wise (so you either heal folks up or blast them with force and some lightsaber moves). Also in healer advanced class and DPS advanced class there are two more trees which specialize into certain subject. So, one class has two main branch and then two specs on each branch. My guess would go that jedi counselor who would like to be DPS has option between specialize to ligthsaber combat or use more force powers (dark ligthing as Sith example, create a storm of it).

But some other classes get insane area effect dmg, example imperial agent can call for 'aerial support' bombard specific spot. or trooper unleash barrage of laser bolts. So what you say about 'jedi wizard' can be possible in one fourth of the scenario when facing a jedi consular.

I was under the impression all classes would be able to fill all roles, rather than being restricted to DPS / tanking / healing. Am I mistaken?

Well, it depends entirely what advanced class you picked. Sith Warrior is clear cut case and has data published already. Sith Warrior can choose between being a Juggernaut or Marauder. Juggernaut is Sith who uses power armor and single lightsaber for combat. Juggernat have two trees; one devoted to increase his toughness (and tanking ability) and other increase his prowess in combat. Marauder case I am not sure what the two talent trees do but so far as I know marauder dual wields two lightsabers and specializes in doing dmg.

So when they say 'any class can do any role' probably means that any class can specialize into selected role. Perhaps marauder haves support talent tree in his side which helps with healing and then there is other side which focus on fast lightsaber usage to kill people.

I think they're going to have some kind of system whereby you can quickly switch. Because unless it's changed since last I checked, it said anyone would be able to fill any role "on the fly", to avoid having to search for particular classes.

But maybe it'll be more similar to having to respec in WoW, rather than just being able to switch to a different set just like that.

Well, DC Universe Online has one button push change from DPS to tank or healer. But I guess it will be respec most likely like in WoW. Or they make quite damn well rounded talent trees. As besides the two talent trees per advanced class there is the 'core' class talent tree (shared by both advanced classes) where you advance until you get chance enter advanced classes.....but even after you enter advanced class you can take core class talents if you want.

Recently, on the official forums of the game, it has been confirmed that 3 of the 4 base classes on either side (Republic and Sith Empire) will have an advanced class that can spec to be a fully valiable healer. Previously, it was asumed that it would only be the 4 Advanced Classes we already knew of; the Jedi Counsular Sage (formaly known as Wizard), the Sith Inquisitor Sorcerer, the Smuggler Scoundrel and the Imperial Agent Operative.

Though it's now 3 per side, the third class on each side to have a healer spec is not yet known. Most believe it will the Bounty Hunter Mercenary and the Trooper Commando, to keep the trent of ranged healers and because the Mercenary and Commando Advanced Classes use medium armor, unlike the heavy armor Bounty Hunter Powertech and Trooper Vanguard.

So, leaving pretty much one melee tank spec (jedi/sith warrior advanced class) and one ranged tank spec (trooper/bountyhunter advanced class) to each side. All classes able specialize for DPS.
