"Of course, but care, lest fractured facets harm the soft skin of your hand,

But surely those crimson trees are live and phanerogamical?

A rich drifting sea breeze blows salty air into our faces

"The skill embodied in the art used only carbon fibre and corundum."

Carved by hand, a masterful touch, the design is perfectly random

"This ocean though is a masterpiece, on such shores I could gaze forever."

Reeling alarmed, I try to keep my composure

"Then I prefer, if we may, to another location not deadly?"

Slender stalactites the walls a-draping, beckoning us along

Brittle tones murmuring against the stone deep inside the sloping spaces

Shafts of crystal to the surface gather sunbeams lighting up our faces

As we descend deeper in the subterranean, labyrinthine system.

Water ripples at the sides of passages, could it flow towards some cistern?

Uncoloured and clear, rippling as naturally as on Earth

Deep in the tunnels, from the planet's moment of birth

Scales glisten on wings, growling, teeth barring smile

Hearing mellow female voices far above all while
Scent of perfume drifts down, intercepted by sensors on their parched skins
Globular eyes spy almost darkened alleys, as the beasts shrug their rectal fins.
The ladies, watching the rippling waters wonder, just how deep

... the waters run, not knowing of the creatures woken from their timeless sleep.

And now the creatures wonder, just how deep they hunger, and what, today, it is they hunger for.

Musky tentacles rolled up under their wings, knowing how to search, haul and catch a score

May penetrate into the dark water above, silently coiling onto a swimmer

Neither beast nor fish nor fowl nor whole cephalopod, there is not one glimmer

of hope, of fleeing these nightmares once they have got the scent.

of their prey swimming in these uncharted lakes, in a dark wet element.

Three women climbing down beside a waterfall, jutting across a steep granite face

Preparing to resolve a wager, a bet, a challenge, a dangerous race.

To swim to the unglimpsed far side of the lake; seems foolhardy to viewers who know

What primeval monsters lurk in the waterfilled caves underneath and are ready to go

silently into action, looking for a plaything or for unhappy ones to devour

The ladies all chatter and dare each other until, finally comes the hour.

At the pre-agreed time, they shake hands, form a line at the edge and begin counting down.

Skirts and shoes piled up neatly, they gaze at the dome, rub their chests and joke around

"Three - two- one: GO!" - they dive gracefully in, feeling the cold, pristine lake

... chill their skin as they slice through the liquid, legs churning, then surface to take

Their first breath and start clawing their way through water with arms smoothly spinning.

Rings spreading around them, the damsel in front watches the shorelines, deep emerald colours blinking

at the brave swimming ladies, unaware of lurking lethal potent arms

Now fully woken by the splashing violations of the lake's cool calm.

Circling closer from below, taking their time as they advance upon the three,
What kind of lesson they should teach these trespassers, they argue passionately.

Meanwhile, the race is spreading out, five lengths from first to last

Arms plunging through cool water, the first one wonders at this chamber where, in ages past,

No human has ever been, she knows. But braving it, she's unaware
Of the resident evil tentacled hosts that now for action do prepare

Lifting her arms wide above the waterline in pride, no inkling of what the team

Will soon have to endure: trials from the realms beyond sleep (and no dream.)

The young lady who's third is delighted to find, as she glances up, that she's not last.
She must have caught up, unusually quickly. Normally she's just not that fast.

The elation soon fades to a niggling doubt as she slowly starts to think.
Then with arms still powering she glances around and her stomach begins to sink.

The middle friend is neither in front nor behind and she calls out "Hey Anne, Bea's gone!"
