Group Writing Activity: Rainworld
« on: December 21, 2010, 11:19:41 PM »

The year is 2076 AD, and the last 70 years have been a rather bumpy ride. It turned out the Global Warming alarmists were the ones closest to correct, though nobody could have predicted the exact results of what the changing weather patterns would be. The polar ice caps, Antarctica- all of it is gone as now the only Ice on the planet is man made.

The ecological disaster was as drastic as you'd expect with entire ecosystems completely wiped out. With the ability to produce food compromised, the world population plummeted from it's peak of 8.3 billion down to the current 1.4 billion. Fortunately, we seem to have experienced the worst of it as the world's population holds steady. As a quirk of the new weather patterns, and seen as a sign that the planet is healing, there isn't a single spot on the planet in which yearly rainfall hasn't at least doubled. There are large areas where it has rained at least an hour a day for every day for almost a decade- especially in urban areas where it's not uncommon to not see the sun for weeks at a time.

It's not all bad news though. Communications technology, computer technology, and biotechnology have all kept pace with their development- maybe not advancing as fast as experts predicted but still making at least some progress daily. Sure you can't go outside without a raincoat anymore- but you don't really need to either. Most people can do their jobs from home- and those that can't are usually manual labor jobs.

Most dramatically, recent discoveries have finally cracked the man-machine interface on some levels. Artificial limbs and sensory organs are considered very expensive but really just another form of body modification on the street level. The use of nanomachines to cure diseases is a bit pricey but usually covered by most medical insurance contracts. Military cyberization happens but the technology hasn't advanced far enough for the killing machines to really occur. The only organ that really can't be enhanced somehow is the brain, and even then it seems like just a matter of time.

Socially, boundaries continue to be pushed and the overall momentum has gone for greater personal freedom. Racial tension is mostly considered a quaint footnote in history as well as gender discrimination in the workplace. Those with cybernetic implants are getting some flak but most people have learned their lesson. Sexual orientation is for the most part considered no more important then eye color, and it's believed that at least half of the adult population has at least experimented with bisexuality.

Drug legalization has made big pushes. Marijuana about as popular as Alcohol now and much more popular then Tobacco. Cocaine, Ecstasy, and Absinthe are also universally legal, if tightly controlled in Cocaine's case. With the advancements of medical fields most of the nastier side effects of these drugs can be canceled out anyway. Cyborgs are starting to develop new "drugs" that specialize in their unique physiologies as well.

As for sexual issues, the change has also been incredibly dramatic. Orientation drama is mostly considered a thing of the past, if hate groups still exist. Taboos are mostly breaking down- pedophilia and rape still being the big two that are frowned upon. And even then rape has a big fetish crowd. The abortion debate is for now considered mostly settled with quick chemical abortions that are reliable all the way into the sixth month on the market. Governments do offer tax incentives to keep and raise children as the common consensus is that the world is underpopulated.

Prostitution is now considered completely legal, and thanks to advances in technology very safe and easy as well. Since that vast majority of diseases can be cured with a quick injection of nanomachines, the hardest part is usually getting the legally required monthly disease test- and even then there exist kits that let the tests be preformed at home. After that it's just a few arrangements over the Internet and a costumer can be at the door within an hour of starting the test.

Pornography is a little more complicated as most governments want to see it encourage safe sexual practices. Most of the legal stuff has to ensure that all performers are aware they are being filmed, of legal age, and always use condoms for any sort of penetration beyond oral. Black market, illegal pornography is mostly what vice cops concentrate on and sadly it's thriving. With how easy it is too make a vid the market can quickly be flooded by vids that don't meet a legal requirement. The most common is a cyborg with recorders built into their eyes and ears recording a normal encounter without telling their partner, but everything from just not using a condom to snuff films featuring children can be found if you know where to look.

Rainworld isn't the easiest place to live, but it's not all bad.

--------------------

Alright, I filed this under Group because the goal is to have a complete world feel to this. Individually it's going to be more like lots of one-on-one stories where the characters weave in and out of each other's lives like tears in the rain. We just all agree that it's in the same oversetting. The feel should be very cyberpunk, otherwise I am allowing complete freedom as long as all characters involve agree. You want to start a revolution, go ahead. You want to just be naughty in a club somewhere, that's fine too. As long as we agree, as all the players affected by the decision agree it's all fair game. Straight, Gay, Lesbian, Herm, NC, Vanilla, Snuff- everything is allowed if everyone involved is okay with it and it doesn't violate site rules.

Thoughts/Volunteers for this World Writing Endeavor?

A real shame this hasn't gotten more attention. I like the setting. It's vague enough to allow for a lot of personal creativity, but concrete enough to keep us going in the right direction.

I'm game for this.

Thank you. I was thinking it would help if I tossed in some ideas for stories. * = Willing to take part in this story myself.

-----------

Club Zero considers itself the forefront of the latest social revolution. Zero Taboos, Zero Restraints, Zero Judgement.
Zero Connections, Zero Responsibility, Zero Satisfaction for anything deeper.

So what happens when love blooms among those who claim to be "beyond" such biochemical reactions?

----------
*
The case started as a simple divorce case. Adultery listed as the cause, and really was openly admitted to. The wife was completely faithful to her husband for years- then suddenly had slept with 8 different men in the month before the divorce proceedings started.

The hearings take a turn for the sinister when it's discovered that someone has added some extra code to her cyber-biological interface software, resulting in certain sex hormones being multiple times as high as they should be.

Somewhere out there, a hacker is rewriting cyber-implants to make their female owners more promiscuous. And somewhere a PI has been hired to find the hacker.

That sounds like a great idea for a novel!

I thought that too, actually. I'd love to find the time to sit down and write it.

Hello TheVillain. This story idea sounds quite fascinating. I was thinking of bringing a character in that is a counselor listening to everyone's problems as I am sure with the altered social environment, there would be many. Or.....a modern day Bordello..haven't closed on either idea..let me know what you think and any ideas of when this might run..

Awesome, some interest picking up.

Right- my original idea is that it will be more a collection of stories. We just happen to be in the same world.

So, what are you thinking for stories? Characters need to at least follow an similar internal logic. No mega-bad-asses without special training, and combat implants aren't that advanced yet. For example.

If I go with the Bordello idea: the Madame would be older..but body enhancements and surgeries for her to retain the 'appearance' of youth.. a much skilled woman in the traits of seduction, sexual pleasure and S & M for those that desire it...Her Bordello would employee a variety of species to accomodate the likes of her customers. Either I could play out different 'employees' of hers servicing customers OR..other players could apply to enter her employment. The 'customers' would also be other players..

If I went with the counselor character- she is a Dr. maybe in her mid 20's...her ESP is amplified and so she 'senses' the feelings and desires of people..she is a sex therapist among her other talents..able to 'cure' those that are overly aggressive or possess a decreased passion..So...your choice..tell me which you prefer and I will develop that character .

For my character I was thinking he'd be a bit of a 'vigilante journalist'. He does the work the police don't want to do, and he exposes the corruption the politicians want kept hidden. He'd have grown up in the hard parts of the city they're in and knows how to cheat, steal and fight his way to what he wants.

As for a plot, I don't have any real input at the moment.

Right, hmm. . .

Marlow's Vigilante Jounalist reminds me of Spider Jerusalem, which is fine. My thought is he's got to get evidence to his paper- which is across town and sending it electronically would tell certain people where his location is.

Aeval's Bordello Owner could work, but the different species available are "Human" and "Human Plus". And the therapist's "ESP" would have to be entirely from implants but that could work too. Still thinking on stories.

That comment on ESP gave me an idea for  a character. Which could easily be threaded into two of the proposed story lines.

The inventor of the 'Emotion Sensitivity Patch' a device used to enhance therapy by giving psychologists a stronger connection to clients, and given o couples on the rocks to increase non verbal communication, letting them feel each others emotions.

He could have visits with the therapist, to ensure the device is working properly and that it isn't making her too involved with the patients [a common pit fall of therapists even without enhancement].

The ESpatch could also be what the hacker is exploiting in thevillain's story.

I was going for he was using the software that keeps cybernetics and biologics from killing each other, but the ESPatch would make things easier for him.

Spider Jeruselam was the basis for my proposed character, so no surprise there.

For TheVillain's plot, to elaborate, perhaps there's a new drug on the streets that effects people's hormones. The shadier clubs are starting to use very small doses in their drinks and in the ventilation to 'encourage' more debaucherous and 'fun' behaviour to ensure a big draw. This would fall under (warning, incoming legal jargon) 'City Ordinance 1137 - Which states mind-altering chemicals, when used on a person without forewarning or explicit consent, is to be deemed an illegal use of said substance'.

My character could be writing a story on it/trying to find leads on who's dealing, Bob's character could somehow be involved with it (perhaps it started out as a component of the ESpatch before a more efficient model was devised. It didn't take long for people to modify it in to a sort of aphrodesiac), and Aeval's character could possibly know some of the people dealing it.

Just a thought.

Both. giving counciling and sex at the same time.
I've been hung up on the idea of two characters.
the first being a rising corprate star a male seducer who's mechanacly enhansed charms people's companies out from under them.
The second is a biologic, kind of a spof on internet culture and the obsessive sexual world people find themselves in. he had himself biosculpted and mechanicly enhansed untill he became almost like his online persona (a furry since I seem to enjoy playing them and poking fun at them at the same time.) He's risen to top of the party scene, but he's becoming jaded with all the sex, and his persona is losing it's appeal. he can't change back, but he's beginning to regret it now, but what can he do against a persona that's taken over his life?
i think i like the biologic more.... better story potental

The basic idea is sound, just I'm not convinced bio-engineering is THAT advanced. Not to the point where it is reliable for consumer use.

consumer?
under the skin and shaping everything else is 100% human...
it's vat grown grafts, plastic surgery, and cybernetics.
they have to try it on someone, and the sexual community always gets it's hands on the new toys first.
face it we're closer to a sex robot than curing cancer...
the future would be little diffrent, Cybernetics and surgery allowing people to enact their kinks

Ah, so you're saying it's cybernetics and masks more then genetic re-writing?

Hell, we got people who do stuff like that now- if much more primitive then you're proposing.

Right, I'll allow it. But the first cry of "Fursecution" and I'm slapping you silly. :P

the only time he claims bias is when it might get him laid...

Something about that post made me laugh. Like when a DnD player admits that while he'd like for his character to upgrade his equipment with the money he has, he acknowledges that he'll just blow it all on mead and whores.
