PM To field
« on: June 09, 2010, 05:28:40 PM »
Sometimes when I write PMs, when filling in the 'To' field, a dropdown box appears suggesting members. Sometimes it doesn't. This is in Opera 10.53. Not a serious issue, but I thought I would note it in case it was either easy to fix, or indicative of a greater issue.

I've found (on Firefox) that the drop-down doesn't appear before the page has fully loaded. Perhaps some script is delaying it, and waiting a few seconds before starting would solve the problem.

I've found it will also only drop down after typing the first 3 characters of the name.

Not useful if you're sending a PM to Ty then :P

True, I just tried - it doesn't pull up Ty's name. I went to member search, typed "ty", clicked on Ty's profile, and clicked on "send a personal message." I'm not sure if typing "ty" in the to would work and since I don't know Ty I wouldn't want to send a random PM.

To be fair, the main reason I have issues with the dropdown missing is that when it is doing so, a few member's names also break (apostraphes, are bad for scripts). If it becomes a persistant issue I'll have to ask the user(s) to change their names, or communicate via email or similar.

I'm making an assumption you have an RP with these individuals or you are interacting with them in some in a thread.

In your thread, you can click on the user's avatar (or name) to go to their profile. On the left side it should say "send personal message." If you click on that it automatically opens a PM and puts the member's name in the "to." No need to type names at all.

If they respond you can now always use that message to reply and again never have to type in their name.

Just some suggestions from an OCD E user.

I don't believe it's necessary for that drop-down menu to appear to send a PM to that user.

Requesting people to change their user names is a little... intrusive. Alxnjsh has pointed out several easy ways to send someone a PM without ever typing their name. I agree the drop box is handy, and I love having it there but if it doesn't work for some reason there's other routes to take to get the user's name.

I agree with you to a certain point - having non alphanumeric characters in usernames can confuse the software sometimes. Perhaps an issue for the site admins to consider in a future upgrade of the forums?

I have tried these alternative methods for putting in the names. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I noted the dropdown box as something that seemed related to the issue, and thus if I could find a simple reason why the browser wasn't running that script or whatever it would be a quick fix.

In any case, I will not be pressuring anyone to change their forum name(s), I mostly raised the issue in the hopes of not having to do so at all. With luck it will be a transitory.

A quick test suggests Chrome is functioning though, so I will probably just use it instead when needed.

Thank you to everyone who gave advice on this subject.

Incidentally, you don't have to even hit their profile to send a PM; you just click the little status monitor. (The one that's green if they're online and white if they're offline or hidden.)

You can also PM directly from the forums, if you click the icon beneath the avatar. Don't click the envelope , or you'll end up sending an email instead.

I knew the Caeli tech hint but the Trie one is new to me as well!

I've always just stared at that and thought... ooh pretty! ;D

I must be annoyingly process ordered - I click on the name to get to the profile and click Send Personal Message from there most times.  I can't seem to take the shortcut.

I think the same as you do, although I know I don't have a mind. More a bowl of steamy pornographic mush.

It looks like case closed!
