Talarez and his blade are very lightweight.
When the war first began, many lives were lost in both the initial attack, and the counter attack. Human mages would join battalions of soldiers in the fight, being the most powerful weapon they had, and the most valuable. When the king finally received word that he only had a few Mages left, he pulled them from the front, and began having the remaining teach them.
He couldn't teach everyone magic - he needed soldiers to hold off the invading armies and to guard him. They couldn't be learning spells and fighting the war at the same time.
The Grand Mage Marcias saw the death and destruction covering the land. Casualties on both sides only saw his brothers fall when the king sent them off to die. Finally, he took himself and hid from the world, crafting the weapon to win the war. After some time, he found it. Imbuing his staff's orb with the magic of old, he marched. Incinerating, Banishing and Dominating his way across the kingdom, one opponent after another fell before his mighty staff.
The Dragoons could not let him continue the slaughter of their people. A battle was set. Some of the finest warriors were placed directly in the path of the Grand Mage Marcias.
One of the most devastating battles in history took place in the village. Talarez's two sons stood and fell beside him, along with his only brother. Lost and destroyed, Talarez rushed toward the Mage. The Mage passed him off as any other foolish warrior, and sent a spell at him. The spell ravaged him, but did not kill him. In shock, the Mage allowed him to draw closer, and Talarez's cleaved him through the shoulder, and out the hip. Both sides retreated.
The staff was not destroyed, but even on recovery... No one could use it.
Talarez's physical form was darkened, and his aura was destroyed, giving off a dead feeling. Upon arrival home, he was taken to the Council, and they spoke with him, before finally deciding to exile him, though thanked him deeply for what he had done for their race, and sympathized greatly for the sacrifice he had paid.
Talarez's mate, Lisora, died of starvation after her sons, step brother, and mate did not return. Like a love bird, they never live without the other. Talarez was not told of her death.
Despite being exiled, Talarez did not leave the land of the Dragoons. Instead, he was sealed deep underground in a Prison, set in the magical equivalent of a coma.
Distant, but caring.
