There is alot of ways to look at this. But as i see it, if all the information and tendencies are unrealistic to your personal life..then its completely fiction and the significant other has nothing to worry about. But when personal information comes into play(Real life fetishes, tendencies, styles or just general romance/sexual facts) then it becomes at least partial non-fiction. This goes more so for the romantic part of RPing seeing as how theres that chance that something could happen to where you actually begin having feelings for your RP partner. But if none of that comes into play and the significant other is aware and understanding of the situation then i wouldn't call it cheating. A bit disrespecting...but not cheating. Thats just my opinion and views on it though.

I believe if you do it without your partner's consent or knowledge, you are crossing a line.  Personally, I do not think it is as bad as cheating physically, but I do still see it as a betrayal.  As with conventional cheating, it is often a symptom of other issues within the relationship.

I disagree. I don't think it would be a problem to do that without the partner's knowledge. Partnership is not property. I don't think it is a betrayal if there is no actual desire on the cybering.

My boyfriend has two rules when it comes to me Rping with others.

Never try to keep it a secret.

Don't allow real emotions to come into it.

The first is so he can feel comfortable with it. If I am hiding RP there must be a reason why I feel ashamed not to share it with him. If he is informed on whats going on he doesn't feel like he is being neglected or abandoned for another. He in fact LOVES to hear about my on-line exploits.

The second is a given, if my heart starts to stray then I might as well be cheating. I have lots of room in my heart for friends and family, but when it comes to the special love that someone has to another that goes pass sex and friendship then that is crossing a line. I will admit when I first got with my boyfriend now we had issues with me RPing but as long as I stay

True and Honest. Everything is okay.

But then what do you say to your partner if you want to get into sexual roleplay? Would you consider it the same as playing an MMO or only looking at porn or something else (like why would your partner want that?)

It's all a gray area, every person and each relationship are different, so it depends on their view of the situation.  I think the various lines that can be drawn differentiate between roleplaying, perhaps intensity or individualization of the roleplay to suit personal tastes, or cybering as yourself.  No doubt when strong emotions are involved things get much more complicated.  If someone's partner wants to watch tv all the time and puts off sex, are they cheating with the tv?  I agree everything would be a symptom of an underlying problem in the irl relationship, and I think cheating online is different than cheating irl.
