The stupid instruments were all wrong.  This was not the sky he should be seeing. The stars were all wrong.  And now the drive had cut out. 
Three hours had passed.  What options were there... M class planet.  Gravity 1.05 terran standard.  No major constructions to view from this distance.  What choice was there?

Planetfall, the lander really was not made to come in at this tight an approach, but he was an excellent pilot. 
To bad no one told the huge trees that.
Waking.  Where the....oh yeah.   Diagnostics.. Air -- high oxygen, would help him.  No bad microbes,  various life forms...  Drive coils rupturing....OH Crud.  He donned a suit, grabbed a pack and ran.  The flash was bright when it lit up.  So much for the beacon.

So.   alien world...low supplies...little knowledge of terrain.  Unless an angel flew down from heaven, he was SOL.
