Australian Govt. plans to censor the Net.
« on: December 15, 2009, 02:59:54 AM »
If you notice a disturbing absence of Australians here in the future, here's why.

The Federal Government will introduce compulsory internet filtering to block overseas sites which contain criminal content, including child sex abuse and sexual violence.

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy announced the changes today following a controversial trial to filter the internet which was conducted earlier this year.

Senator Conroy says some internet content is simply not suitable in a civilised society.

"It is important that all Australians, particularly young children, are protected from this material," he said.

"The Government believes that parents want assistance to reduce the risk of children being exposed to such material."

Sadly at this stage, the most we can do is make sure our local members of Parliament know how we feel about it.

Free proxy site will get around it. And when they block that? Sadly, will need to get membership... 200-300 dollars is a small price to pay for something as prescious to me as Elliquiy.

Still, even saying that, the things a disgrace.

Legislation will be introduced into Parliament next year...
Hopefully it won't get past House of Reps.

I'm not exactly shocked by this.  Haven't they been talking about that for awhile? Proving once again that it is better to shield people from stuff than to confront it.  What could possibly go wrong?

No, that one was both voluntary and user-end.  The new one is ISP-end and compulsory.

Honestly I'm kind of, sort of for internet censorship. If it's one thing people should be spared from it's the abject stupidity of others... there are exceptions of course. Like E... but I can do without the porno adds... and the chafing.

I'm writing this through a proxy server because for some reason my internet service provider who just so happened to trial the internet filter is refusing me access to Elliquiy.  I'm going to freak right out now.

EDIT: Thankfully, this edit was made without a proxy.  All's right again.
