Nerina Pallot's Fires
First encountered at a Suzanne Vega concert in Cardiff's St. David's Hall, where she was the support act.
The Suzanne Vega concert was small, intimate, about 800 souls and Nerina opened with just a guitar and her voice. It was stunning. After a few more tracks she ended her set and said she'd be signing her new CD - Fires - in thebar. That place emptied like you would not believe. Hardly anybody stayed inside. We all went out and bought the CD. I looked at my mate and said; " How the f*** is Suzanne Vega going to follow that?" Needless to say, she did just fine.
A selection here. She's done just two albums - Dear Frustrated Superstar and Fires - and while the first was OK, Fires was astonishingly polished and mature. Well written, well played and the young lady has the looks and voice of an angel.
