Stardrive [Scifi/Fantasy, NC:E]
« on: September 23, 2009, 11:17:08 pm »
The A.S.V. Rocinante is the newest exploration ship of the Terran Alliance built by the Hauptman Cartel.  Sent from Alpha Centauri with a crew, partially volunteers, partially draftees, it was directed to explore the Procyon A and Procyon B star systems.  The maiden voyage of the Rocinante was going well, until they ran into a gravitational anomaly.  Sensors didn't pick up the anomaly until too late, and all systems went down as the Rocinante was ripped out of reality for a few moments.  Gravitational stresses damaged the ship heavily, and a number of crew members just...vanished.  When the ship systems finally came up on emergency power, there were less than a dozen living crew members remaining, and the ship was in dire need of repairs.  They were also in a completely unknown sector of space, and none of the astrogation computers could determine their location.  The machine shop on board was capable of producing the necessary components repairs, but they needed more raw materials.  A nearby system gave readings that indicated that there were appropriate raw materials, and there were the signatures of a technologically advanced society from the system.  When the ship came into range of the system at last, they found that in addition to two inhabited systems, there was a massive station orbiting a gas giant, with multiple ships of varying designs docked there.  This is where things will begin.

The game will be roughly using the Progress Level system from the Alternity or d20 Future game systems, but knowledge of such isn't necessary.  The game is primarily of PL 6, or the Fusion Age, and has some elements from the Gravity Age (PL 7).  This means that most weapons are projectile based in personal combat, though some energy weapons are available, mostly as Heavy Weapons.  This does not make the game a system game.  It will not be a system game.

Races: Any common fantasy race is allowable, as are some more exotic races.  This game is set in an alternate universe where fantasy races always existed, and no current nation names are applicable.

Magic: Magic is commonplace through the Terran Alliance, but it has a number of limitations, primarily that it cannot create something from nothing, nor can it allow instantaneous teleportation.  Also, it is generally highly energy intensive to use potent spells.

A.S.V. Rocinante

Crew 75
Defenses: Neutronite Armor & Gravitic Deflectors
Weapons: 2 Particle Beam Turrets, 4 Plasma Turrets
Drive: Spatial Warp Drive, Gravitic Impulse Drive

The Rocinate is a high-tech exploration ship, and its Spatial Warp Drive is capable of propelling it at a rate of 2 light years per week, double what any other drive system to date is capable of.

Several points.  First, this game was based off the Lost Command game that appears to have sadly died, so if people from that game are interested, they are quite welcome to join.  Second, if you have magical abilities, please keep them within reason.  If you decide to have an invulnerable shield, I expect it to stop air, or make you unable to move, or other such.  Third, we're going to have Navel and Marine personnel on board the ship, and we will use the ranks of such.  Also, the Captain and Executive Officer are both dead, as is the Marine Captain.  I'll be posting a sample character sheet shortly that I will be playing, and I will ask ShamshielDF to post the rank breakdowns for people.  If you're interested just post here. ^_^

Name: Aerynis Lydira
Rank: Lieutenant, Junior Grade
Specialty: Doctor with Healing and various defensive magics
Appearance: A slender elf with large, deep green eyes and long crimson hair that would reach the floor unbound.  She generally wears loose upper garments in dark green colors, as well as more practical tight-fitting trousers or such. She hates the uniforms when she is required to wear them.  She moves with a natural grace that tends to draw the eye.
Personality: Generally quiet and patient, Aerynis has had a much shorter temper of late, particularly when she was drafted for her skills as a doctor barely out of school.  Most of the time she is kind, but she has a tendency toward sarcasm when people get out of their depth.  She knows that she isn't the most knowledgeable person around, but at least she admits it when she doesn't know.  Aerynis is also a very closeted lesbian, but thus far has avoided all companionship.
History: Aerynis Lydira was born in a small, unnamed elven enclave.  She had a talent for healing magic, but would likely have lived her life in the enclave if it hadn't been for the fighter plane that crashed nearby.  No one expected the pilot to live, but Aerynis didn't give up, and not only managed to keep the pilot from dying, but also regenerated the nerve damage that he had received in the crash.  When the military retrieved their pilot, they offered to send Aerynis to a school of her choosing to increase her capabilities in the art of healing.  She chose to go to the Lunar Academy of Medical and Magical Healing, and graduated there at the mere age of 20 with the highest honors of her class.  Unfortunately, immediately afterward she was drafted to serve aboard Rocinante, a fact that has left her somewhat bitter and suspicious of the military.  She began service aboard Rocinante as the second doctor of the ship.

This is interesting. Does it deal only with magic though? Or does it deal with other scientific beings as well, i.e. robotics?

Robots, at least as Artificial Intelligences are not possible.  The Rocinante might have an AI, but only a mainframe of that magnitude can run an AI.

Ahh.  Yes, basic 'cyberware' is available.  Not common, mind, but it exists.

Elven form:

Succubus form:

sans the horns, plus tail.

Name:  Korrua'nae Hunithghymn / Tethumhaxael

Rank:  Private

Race: Succubus (appearing as elf)

Specialty:  Originally started in the fighter pilot programs, she later moved into the more broad spectrum combat pilot and tactical programs, particularly ship-board weapons and ship to ship combat.  As a succubus she is more particularly trained for insertion and covert espionage, though no one else knows.  Decades of practice with shapeshifting and biological studies, she has honed her skill to the degree even the most in depth physicals have found no discrepancy.  She has managed to avoid magical physicals thus far, remaining worried that she might not pass them.

Appearance:  Long red hair reaches to the middle of her back with two pert elfy ears poking out at cute angles.  The most common descriptions given of her include the word "cute" or "kid sister".  Those who've done dogfight simulations with her have rather different words to describe her tenacity in space combat and tactics.

History:  Tethumhaxael was 'born' several centuries ago.  The demons knew that time was growing short and that the mortal races were working systematically to shut down their cults and the center of their power.  She, along with a small handful of others, were trained from an early age to infiltrate the mortal races, to manipulate events such that at least a few of their cults would survive.  In turn, many of the cults had to be betrayed to allow their mortal followers to perish, for the others to live.

After 50 years of training the half dozen that were trained were sent out on their various missions.  Tethumhaxael took the name Korrua'nae Hunithghymn, inserted into one of the elven enclaves.  Records were forged and she joined mortal society like any other individual recently moved to town.  She found work at a nearby air base in the chaos surrounding one of the great wars, helping with manufacturing and maintenance of aircraft, listening to rumors and spreading some of her own.  Few realized how extensive her web of contacts was in and around the air base.

After, she joined the air force proper, working her way up through to pilot and giving her an in with the officers of the base.  As the cults dwindled and faded, a few managed to survive, acting more like secret societies than the churches they had started out as.  By the time the cult hunts had finished, perhaps five remained.  She pondered what she was to do at that point.  She could quietly withdraw from mortal society and return to her old life, but she had never learned many of the basic lessons of succubi.  In the end, she decided to continue as things were.

Over the following centuries, she bounced between various branches of the armed services; navy, army, marines and so forth.  Elves were always promoted slowly, given their generally long life spans and different view on how the world worked.  When the military space program started, she finished her tour with the marines and signed on with the deep space navy.

With the years of experience in various armed services, she started as a commissioned officer, working her way slowly through the ranks.  With the advent of the newest ship, it was decided to redeploy her as Chief Tactical Officer, with a promotion to Lieutenant Commander.  With any luck, it would mean that she would be far enough from home that her sisters, concerned that she had never returned, would not be able to find her.  Even demons begin wondering about someone that wanders off for a few centuries.

I'm also interested in this also, my only question is.....How do you feel about an advanced Spartan? I've been wanting to try this idea out for some time.

My character would be known as a Gladiator his call number would be 0161. He's basically the improved version of HALO's Spartans. He wouldn't have a rank because Spartans were supposed to be top secret and so the Gladiator porject would be a ghost project.

He's strong enough to use a car as a bat but, he couldn't lift a tank by himself. How I was thinking of getting him into this RP was that when your ship dissapears and then reappears, it appeared in his timeline and then he was thrown into the current timeline when reality snapped back on itself.

He'd be atleast 7 feet tall at about 300 pounds naturally which is increased to 600 pounds with his power armor on, and like Master Cheif he almost never takes off his helmet, leaving people wondering what he really looks like.

I can provide a short summary of his life if you'd like or if that doesn't work for you, I can try something else.

Okay, I was almost certain that the idea had died, but I'm good for questions. ^_^

Chelemar: Sounds good, PM me or IM me at any point, and I'll do my best to answer questions.

Gladiator0161: While I am fine with you joining, I'm not allowing character's from alternate time streams/tech levels.  I'm using a couple as base-lines because I want a solid idea of what is or is not possible, and unfortunately Spartans outclass the current technology in every aspect save for weaponry, including the biological manipulation.  So I'd prefer if you came up with another concept.  Now, powered armor does exist in this tech level, but it no more than increases strength by 1/4 over current time maximum.  Also, minor muscular enhancements are possible, but wouldn't increase him to quite that level.  But if you have other ideas or questions, feel free to ask.

For those that are interested, here's a breakdown of naval ranks.

First, naval officers:
Lieutenant, Junior Grade
Lieutenant Commander

Then, marines, enlisted
Private through Lance Corporal make up the majority of forces.  Sergeant and Staff Sergeant are non-commisioned officers, lowest level supervisory positions.  Above that are staff and command NCOs.

Private First Class
Lance Corporal
Staff Sergeant
Gunnery Sergeant
Master Sergeant

Warrant officers are primarily former enlisted experts in specific specialized fields, providing leadership only to those within their speciality.
Warrant Officer 1
Chief Warrant Officer 2 - 5

Commissioned Officers
The key difference between commissioned officers and non-commissioned officers is their formal written authority as granted in the name of the flag admiral of the navy, granting rank and authority as an officer.

Second Lieutenant
First Lieutenant
Major  (Honorary, temporary promotion for a marine captain aboard ship to prevent confusion of two captains)

Ok, so I've got a new idea for a character. How about a experimental super soldier, not so much strength as speed this time. I'm talking about faster information processing, reflexes and running speed. I've taken his looks from Final Fantasy's Cloud Strife and I've got a picture of a power armored suit that you might like.

There is a catch however, he doesn't remember anything about himself before the procedure, so all he knows is his call sign "Bi'nok" which stands for Biologic Information and Nueral Offensive Combat. He'd have a slight telepathic and telekinetic power as well as martial arts training and other combat training because of his life in the Army/Marines. Not magic mind you, but it would be a result from pure genetic tampering.

Would this be ok for you, because I can throw up a bio quite easily that explains everything about this character.

Most of it sounds good, save for the telepathy/telekinesis.  Sorry, but if it's something like that, it's magic.  Period.  And magic requires training to use, and is never innately understood.  Sure, someone can figure it out through trial and error, but that's the closest you can get without training.

Hi there, I'm interested in joining.  I have a couple character ideas, but first I'd like to know if it is okay to play as an alien?  In keeping with the fantasy-in-sci-fi theme, I imagined an alien race based on non-western fantasy/mythology.  Something like a div [like in Prince of Persia] or an oni?

If not, I think I'd be a bookish type halfling who works in logistics [unexciting job and feels his talents are being wasted].  Either character would be an alchemy specialist.

No aliens, as this is going to be first contact with a race from another planet.  As evidenced, however, demons and such are available should you have the backstory to back it up.  As to the other, sounds good.

Ok, here's my Character's Bio, enjoy! XD

Character Name: Raelin Darkfire (unknown to character)
Rank: Staff Sergeant
Alias:Bi'Nok (Biologic Information and Nueral Offensive Combat)
Height: 6'2" Weight: 230 pounds

I don't own this image

Appearance: Black Hair, Blue Eyes and a bishounin handsomeness to his features. His features reflect a mixed heritage, his father being human and his mother being an elf.

I don't own this image either, though I will take credit for the horrible modifying that was done XD
He wears a light leathery armor most of the time, when he's not in his power suit and his body is moderatly muscled, though still looking quite lean because of his tall frame. He rides a black motorcycle for transportation when on the ground, which is rare, and as far as he knows is his sole posession besides the power suit and weaponry that he has on his person.

That's right, I don't own this image either XD

Personality: Bi'Nok is a very quiet person, some would say withdrawn but usually those people don't know him very well. He likes being around people and he likes talking to them but, his memory loss is of constant concern to him and he finds that conversations because of that factor, tend to be awkward around him. Therefore he listens to people most of the time, in hopes of comforting them with an willing ear.

Even though he doesn't know who he is, it is clearly evident that he'd give his life for a friend if need be. When he does talk, he's friendly and kind, though sometimes blunt if anyone ever manages to tick him off. He's constantly suprising himself with his abilities, how he handles weapons and the various martial arts styles that he knows, however, which can be funny at times, even though he doesn't mean it to be.

Raelin Darkfire was born into a wealthy family with a history in the military in Alpha Centauri, that went back to their great ancestors. His father was a Major in the Marines and his mother was a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy. They'd met in a bar when they were young where military personnel from both groups would commonly hang out, they'd met, dated for 5 years and married early into their 6th year. Their schedules were relatively the same for a long time so, they got to see each other at 5 o'clock every evening. Then in their 7nth year Raelin came into their lives. The mother retired early from the navy to take care of the baby and the father kept his position in the Marines, providing for the family.

Even at an early age Raelin was very intuitive and had talents in the magical arts of Telekinesis. He fiddled with them unconciously as a youngster and then tried to more accurately control his magical talents as he grew older. His mother helped to train him somewhat in his abilities as he grew. When Raelin turned fifteen his parents bought him his first vehicle, a motorcycle. His father took a short shore leave and taught his son how to handle the heavy and expensive vehicle. Raelin glowed with joy as he stood by his parents to the side of the motorcyle and had a family photo taken, which he kept with him ever since.
He took great care of the vehicle, washing it regularly and learning from his father on how to repair it.

Raelin heard stories of both parents experiences as he grew up and when he turned 18 he joined the army as a Private. He trained in the basics in boot camp , as well as adding in training in Telepathy and Telekinesis, for 4 weeks until he was ready to be deployed into a platoon at the rank of Private First Class. He worked through the ranks for three years finally attaining the rank of Sergeant.

Then he heard of a new division that was being prepped for a super soldier type program called BINOK or Biologic Information and Nueral Offensive Combat. He volunteered after learning about it, and for a year they worked on making him their first prototype super soldier. When all was said and done, he'd lost his memories because of the surgical procedures but, his body remembered the training he'd received, he spent alot of time in th recovery wing training to use the power suit that was "going to be an extension of himself". He also spent alot of time relearning names, ranks and friendships. Unfortunatle his parents had died earlier that year in a car accident, unknown to him.

From what he understood, for the first year they had prepared his body so that it could handle the suit, making him stronger, faster and expanding his potential in information absorbtion, through experimental surgeories. Now they were training him on using the suit. The suit made his reflexes faster, his running speed faster, increased his strength by a third, which allowed him to lift a fridge quite easily, enhanced his natural powers of Telepathy and Telekinesis and made his eyes sharper. It also had multiple systems which they trained him in. After they were satisfied he could operate the suit and that the his body was adjusting to the procedures, he was shipped out to join the crew of the A.S.V Rocinante as a Staff Sergeant, going by the name Bi'nok.

Name:  Miles Branlin (Mil for short)

Rank:  Sergeant

Specialty:  Alchemy.  Also excels at "scrounging".

Appearance:  A young halfling in his mid-twenties.  His hair is short and wavy, light brown in color.  His eyes are hazel.  Mil is of a light build (as opposed to the more stocky types of halflings).  When not in uniform, he likes to wear simple, unassuming clothes, generally earth-tones: t-shirt, trousers and a brown coat.  His civvies also almost always include an archaic boulder hat.  He owns a pair of reading glasses which he uses from time to time.

Personality:  Typically laid back and unambitious, though he has lately been feeling more and more like a third wheel within his unit.  Mil does tend to sulk when he feels useless.  He likes to keep to himself when off duty, but can talk for hours about things that pique his interest.  Generally a nice guy who can at times be too polite and differential.

History:  Born and raised in a halfling farming community back on the home world.  Mil joined the navy in order to escape his drab existence and find adventure.  He decided to go into logistics on the mistaken belief that the job involved the use of logic and wit.  Unfortunately this meant that he traded one boring and tedious job for another, and he learned that the petty jealousies and squabbles that he thought were left behind him back on the farm had their equivalents in the service.  He has dabbled in a dozen other field during what little free time he can find, alchemical science being the only thing he has proved any good at thus far.  His time in the navy was almost over, only a month left, when he was assigned to the supply staff of the Rocinante and shipped out.

I've got a few questions about the game, Myrleena.

Is there expected to be a particular speed for the game [as in, how often should we post]?

Since first contact is going to be a part of it, there are going to be NPCs.  Does that mean you will be GMing or will we be handling it some other way?

And as for the adult aspect, will the game center on sex or will it just be a possibility?

Umm, that's all I can think of at the moment.

Name: Lily Weiss
Rank: Sergeant
Specialty: Destructive Magics

Appearance: Short White hair that she has gained from her inheritance (but dont tell her that) Lily has a soft face with striking blue eyes. She dresses in the regular uniform when need be but in combat she prefers to wear a long white and black jacket with various runes and protective enchantments on them. To amplify her powers she carries with her an Ebony Wood staff with a red saphire jewel at the tip.

Personality: Have been treated her life as a 'person of mass destruction' Lily has been forced to hone her skills her whole life. As a result, her personality can suffer a bit. While a bit shy she sometimes over extends herself, especially when emotional. Some say she can be as random as her powers.

History: With a demon bloodline traced from her great grandfather, Lily was born with some innate magical talent. However at an early age she wanted to study magic using as little of that 'advantage' as possible. For her whole childhood she studied magic. However she found herself focusing too much on the destructive side of magic a bit more. This gained the interest of a marine recruiter who offered to help her improve her skills if she joined. She agreed but only promised to join if her demonic blood was kept secret. As she joined she learned to keep the collaterial damage to a minimum, and can almost be seen as some as a 'walking artillery' for when fire really needs to fly. She is still young at the age of 20, and still has alot to learn. But the fact she has made Sergeant already shows she is capable of learning and growing fast.

Okay, let me the moment I'm looking at putting up two or three posts a week.  The exact number will vary, but that's what's intended at the moment.

For the second part, there will be some NPCs at least, and those I will be GMing.  I'm still waiting to hear from someone who may be playing one of the aliens, and that's what I'm currently waiting on.

And as for the adult aspect...well, that'll depend.  Partially on the other players, and I am not going to be too explicit with NPCs, it just isn't something I'm comfortable with.
