Self-loathing and maniacal; homicidal bouts of insanity.History:
Once known as Dr. Jonathan Crane, a professor at Gotham University, the man that would eventually become known as the Scarecrow had been obsessed all his life with fear, and what it could do to ordinary people. Stemming from his own fear of his abusive father as a child, he had vowed to overcome his own fears, even if that meant making others afraid of him. Throughout his school years, he was constantly ridiculed for his thin and lanky appearance, and the scorn of his classmates caused a deep hatred within his heart, especially for two unfortunate classmates: Bo Griggs (a jock), and his girlfriend Sherry Squires (who had rejected Crane's advances). During the night of the senior prom, he dressed in the Scarecrow costume, and leapt out of the shadows while the couple was driving home. Bo swerved to avoid the strange creature, and the resulting accident left Bo crippled for life, and his girlfriend dead. At first mournful of his actions, it wasn't until he rationalized his revenge that he realized his savage delight in literally frightening people to death.
He became a professor of psychology at Gotham University, specializing in the psychology of fear. During one classroom lesson, he pulled a gun on his classmates and fired at them, inadvertantly injuring one of them. The intent of the experiment was to show them that they could all be paralyzed by fear, but instead, it only resulted in him being fired and further fracturing his already damaged ego-centric mind. He killed the regent that fired him, and went into hiding, only reemerging later as a psychologist at Arkham Asylum.
But his obsession with fear only deepened his insanity during his time with his patients. Having perfected his fear-inducing toxin, he applied it to the patients, and documented their reactions to the drug. This didn't go on for long before he was discovered and ultimately fired, and his license to practice medicine revoked. Enraged, he took to the Scarecrow identity more than he ever had before, and began systematically torturing and killing the doctors and board members of the asylum. It was then that he caught the Batman's attention, and was subsequently beaten. Somehow the caped crusader was able to overcome the fear toxin's effects, and turn his terror-gas on the doctor. The irony is that after his defeat, he was placed into confinement at the asylum, with all the vengeful inmates he had once experimented on.
