She smiled at his gesture and that made her feel very warm inside. "We haven't had the money to do anything with the house or garden yet." She did want to fix it up but right now with half the money gone from her brother there was no way she could do it.

"No life insurance?" Darren sounded concerned.

"We are young. We never thought of it." She sighed into his neck.

"The follies of youth..." Darren again sounded like her grandfather.

She noticed the grandfather like to his voice. "Honestly never thought of it at 20 years old."

"That's part of the reasons there is this saying, my dear. Part of growing older is thinking more and more about death." It would be a good intro for some clichee speech about accepting death as part of life and such, but Darren didn't do that. Instead he spoke about furniture and gardening shops he knew, and a carpenter.

She wanted to do something with the house but didn't have the money. "I really can't afford it. There's nothing I can do right now." It was true the house did need some fixing up.

"oh, I am a man of some means... and what better way to spend money than to help a damsel in distress?" As corny as the line should have been, Darren made it sound natural, making her think of a victorian gentleman speaking, not a teenager quoting some fad movie.

A small smile escaped her lips when he said that making her feel very special. "I really don't want to take your money." She said knowing he probably would move in here anyway. Maybe she could use the rent money for renovations but she wont take extra.

"Why not? You can always pay me back in a few years." Darren smiled again, flashing white teeth. Not perfect teeth though - one looked just a bit crooked.

His smile and teeth were almost perfect but perfect in her eyes. "I really don't feel comfortable. But if you are willing to wait a little while then fine."

"I hope it's not my presence that is making you uncomfortable." Darren did not sound as if he really was thinking or fearing this.

"No it's not that at all. I just never bothered borrowing money from anyone." She laid her head on his shoulder.

Darren nodded. "A very old-fashioned view, I suppose. Most people run up debts as soon as they can shop."

She nodded and smiled now she was getting sleepy and closed her eyes. Could she fall asleep like this against him?

Darren seemed not to mind at all, though he did not move his arm around her shoulder or waist, much less tired to cope a feel like others would have done. He seemed content to proovide her with a strong shoulder she could lean against - literally, maybe figuratively as well.

It was a few moments later she had fallen asleep against him. There was a sense of protection and she was at ease with him. Normally she would never do this with someone she just met.

When she woke up sometime in the morning, Darren was gone, but had left her wrapped in a blanket. On the sofa table there was a note, stating he had left himself out, not wanting to wake her up, and that he'd call in the evening. She noted that the handwriting was very neat - her old english teacher would have broken out in joy at the sight.

She yawned remembering not wanting to fall asleep but she did anyway. Smiling at the blanket wrapped around her she started getting up and noticed the note on the table. She was a bit disappointed that he had left without waking her but noticed how neat his handwriting was. Thinking back to when she was in english class she knew her teacher would have liked the writing.

To her surprise she noticed after a bit that a small tree - barely 2 yards tall - had been ... toppled was not the right word, broken off at the ground level seemed more appropriate.

She looked out the window at the tree that was broken slowly she stood and looked out the window. What was going on? It seemed strong enough that someone couldn't really break it.

Closer inspection revealed - apart from how the gaden in general had been neglected lately, there was no lawn to speak of, it was closer to a miniature jungle now - that the tree had indeed been broken off, by what looked like a blow. Though she had no idea what could have done that.

It didn't seem like something human, it seemed as though it was done by a big animal or something of the sorts. She did not think much of it so she walked back in and checked the door to make sure it was locked just in case.

(Do you think one vampire could be after her)?

The door was locked and there were no traces of any intruder - unless said intruder, and not Darren, had moved the dishes and glasses into the dishwasher.

(One or more.)

Everything seemed to be fine and she sighed with relief. She went upstairs to have a long shower and clean herself up a bit.
