So, I'm the first one to admit, that I'm not a particularly tech-savvy person. 

However, I did attend a lecture at my university once, shortly before the whole hype around AI started, where some dorky loser computer-linguist presented her research-project about building a machine that could reliably find metaphors in texts. She never used the term AI, but they were using an LLM. In retrospect, I wish I had paid more attention to the technical parts, but in hindsight it is very interresting, how differently people talk about these things if a) they're not caught up in that weird Silicon-Valley-culture and b) they have no financial interest in convincing you of anything.

I don't think it did. OpenAI is a horrifically unprofitable company, that is only really kept afloat by investors. And news like this make a lot of people think "Wow, AI is really smart and capable, I should invest a few million!".

I'm honestly a bit suspicious of anything written about AI, that OpenAI has a had any contribution in. Because they have a very pressing financial interest to make their product sound as scary and powerful as possible, because that draws investors, which keeps the lights on.

Now, I don't want to say that isn't concerning, but I get a little suspicious when I read "was motivated by " and "understanding" in that context. Because LLMs can't really do/be either of those. At least not in the sense that people commonly use those words. 

I might be a bit tinfoil-hat-y here, but I find the whole rhetoric about AI just so profoundly untrustworthy. Because it's been shaped by people, whose whole business-plan is essentially, to convince as many people as possible of the wondrous things their product will be able to do soon^tm.

The funny thing is how many people in the furry community are involved in tech.  Do you realize how expensive fursuits are?  (Do pilots earn enough to afford fursuits?  That might be a point against Tommy...)  Also, engineering:  there's a story I read about a guy in the US military who introduced his squad to the cooling vests he (and others) use in those fursuits.  Better contouring, more effective, the whole nine.

According to Little Oni, a number of the social media platforms are adding gender-inclusive emotes for everything from shrugging to pregnancy.  She showed me the ones on Discord, which doesn't quite match, but it's about the same complexity. TL;DR:  The man who committed mass murder at Fort Hood (13 dead, 32 wounded) was sentenced to death by a military court.  Regardless of how you feel about the death penalty (which has come under renewed scrutiny in an unrelated case), death by firing squad hasn't been used since 1945.
