This may be of greater interest to the Canadians among us:

As for parties, yeah I mean politicians are generally shit.

As a recent example I present to you federal bill C-4, the "Making Life More Affordable for Canadians Act" which retroactively exempts federal political parties from all and any privacy laws dating back to May 31, 2000, and overrides all current and future provincial legislation.

Some choice tidbits:
- The provision (which amends the election act) was buried inside a financial omnibus bill.
- The retroactivity was to preempt court cases (in progress and future ones) that found that they have been illegally playing fast and loose with personal data since 2000.
- All major political parties (the Conservatives, the so-called "Liberals", the NDP, and even the Block - who are supposed to fight for Quebec's provincial rights) supported it in a rare display of self-interest solidarity.
- The only MP who went on record to oppose it was Elizabeth May from the Greens.
- They didn't even have a formal vote count to avoid embarrassment and individual MP accountability, and passed it "on division" instead (which means broad consensus with some opposition).
- The senate tried to add amendments like removing this clause from the bill, or adding a 3 year sunset clause, but the house rejected all of them and rushed the bill through royal assent. Unfortunately our unelected senate, despite usually being the voice of reason, must defer to the house in case of a disagreement.

And so it goes. I don't believe there is a single Canadian who is not a politician who supports this.

I'm not a political expert, but as I understand it it's pretty common for bills to be 'bundled' like that, something to do with negotiations I think. Not that it makes any of that less a steaming pile of utter dogshit.
