[m x m] friends to enemies to lovers

i've just finished vicious by v. e. schwab and now i'm obsessed with the idea of a m x m friends to enemies to lovers story. this might be rambling but please bare with me!

first, please see here for my other thread. 

this idea follows rough story beats from vicious, but the setting can be adjusted, and the motives will change depending on the setting. plots are currently somewhat vague - happy to discuss details but if i think of specifics i will add them.

➳ modern 

• they used to be friends, poring over comic books together, riding bikes after dark, surviving high school and struggling through college parties and failed relationships.
• one of these parties when very wrong, and mc was arrested. yc managed to evade the cops, possibly giving them evidence or a reason to suspect that mc was instrumental in what happened at the party. (could be a drug bust, student death, etc)
• mc either went to prison or otherwise kicked out of college, essentially ostracised at the very least from the local community. upon release or return, mc wants to confront yc.
• does yc truly think mc had a part in the party's events? perhaps mc was known to sell drugs, was known to have a violent streak? to discuss particulars!

➳ fantasy

• they shared similar dreams, even as they lived their rather mundane lives. despite this, they had differences. these differences split them apart, before throwing them back together, fundamentally changed. 
• the kingdom was at war, two rival factions battling out for the chance to control the throne: loyalists, faithful to the royal family and their gods-given right to rule (no matter how despotic), and the rebels, who wanted to dismantle the monarchy and spread the ruling across several competent people. families were torn apart in the battles and in the bedchambers, as sons went to fight across the field from their father. 
• our characters are on such opposite sides, despite their closeness, brought back together on the battlefield. when the fighting is over, someone will be the victor and the other the loser - perhaps some kind of hostage. 
• this one will focus less on the politics of the world, but i'm always happy to worldbuild!
