"This school exists for a single and timeless purpose: to reveal your innate abilities and hone them to the highest degree. Now, what you do with it after that is entirely up to you. If you want to take over the world, we don't teach that, but give it a go." - Henry Fogg

“Why do you think you were able to do that? Please tell me someone has pointed out to you that magic doesn't come from sunshine and ice cream, for any of us. What you're born with, what gets slammed on you as a kid, what happens now, like your dad... A great way to get what you want is to be so miserable that you don't want it anymore.” - Margo Hanson

Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy, also known as Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy, Brakebills Preparatory College of Magic, Brakebills Academy for Magical Pedagogy, or simply Brakebills, is the premier institution for the study of magic in North America and one of two magical universities found in the United States of America.

Early History

Establishment

Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy was established in Upstate New York in 1763 and became the standard-bearer of the American magical society, having given rise to generation after generation of illustrious Magicians. Using enchanted globes to find people with magical potential, the school evaluates all potential students with scouts before sending them an invitation to take the Entrance Exam and determine whether or not they qualify for enrollment. Though the wards surrounding the school keep it hidden from civilians, some have been known to make their way through the forest and onto campus grounds.

By the 1920s Brakebills taught English and American magic almost exclusively, and as such, lacked a diverse student body until a vogue for multicultural spellcasting swept the school in the '30s and '40s, and the school imported professors from all around, including Dean Mayakovsky and Professor Neeny Bigby, a Pixie. The school recruited skirt-wearing shamans from Micronesian dot-islands; hunch-shouldered, hookah-puffing wizards from inner-city Cairo coffeehouses; and blue-faced Tuareg necromancers from southern Morocco.

Banning Battle Magic

In 1879, Brakebills provided training in Battle Magic to its students, and Professor Neeny Bigby led the course during World War II, when Rupert Chatwin attended the school after he was discharged from the war due to his injuries. Neeny Bigby taught Chatwin how to cast the Rhinemann Ultra, a powerful spell that required the strength of a Master Magician to cast, which Chatwin used to win the Battle of the Bulge in 1945 for the Allied Powers. However, due to the high amount of student deaths in the 1970s, the course was banned by the Brakebills Board of Trustees, and Neeny Bigby was fired from the school. Prior to leaving, however, Neeny Bigby left clues in the school's library for how to find her in the future when a Brakebills student would need her help.

Current Day

Brakebills University has seen a change in administration and in philosophy over the last few years with the events of recent years.  Magic has gone out and come back with rumors of it being tied to the same individuals both times.  Dean Fogg stepped down after much of the trouble as the board had lost some confidence in him despite some ardent supporters among the staff and students.  Though after stepping down, he and a number of his former students have become controversial figures in the magical community. They were the first to point out the growing community of hedge witches who were organizing after a number of incidents in their community.  The fear of unrest between them and trained magicians has prompted efforts of outreach to hedges, which the university has implemented in the last few years.

It is determined a more concerted effort by the University to build relations with the hedge witches is needed.  Brakbills with the help of board members create a town, New Haven, in the area under the protection of the university where trained mages and hedges can mingle and learn to understand each other better. Hedges will not be allowed on campus without special permission and watched by security nor will the be trained formally, it is a simple community outreach program only.  At least officially though some mages may take it upon themselves to further instruct hedges, though if it became known it may lead to disciplinary matters.

A great many things have happened in the years since the Beast first attacked Brakbills and the upheaval has opened a great many parties looking to capitalize on the weakness of the magicians left.  After much consideration, battle magic has been added back into the curriculum though only the practice of L’encerclement* is introduced to first years before far deadlier magics are introduced in later years.  The decision has created some controversy among the board but the majority backed the new Dean’s decision to update the curriculum to include Battle Magic and other traditions.

Although things seemed to have settled over the last few years, a number of reports have come to the administration about gathering resentment among certain sect of hedges and trained magicians.  A resentment that is being fanned with unknown parties working to organize this distrust into a unified faction for unknown reason.  The importance of places like Brakbills seems at a new high as machinations slowly move in other places of the world.

The Magicians: Legacy is a group game inspired by the TV show The Magicians, and to a lesser extent the book series, but knowledge of the show isn’t necessary.  It is a sandbox game set in and around the Brakebills University campus in upstate New York, with some happenings in NYC and other areas since travel is a bit easier in the magical community.  The university in the series is more like a post graduate school so most characters are in their 20s and may, or may not, have already gone to regular college before being invited to take the entrance exam.  While Fillory, think The Chronicles of Narnia, is a big part of the series, the group game would be around the university and perhaps down the road a rebuilt Fillory could be introduced.

So to start, the game would be looking for writers to play students and faculty at the university.  It would be a true sandbox where people can tell their own stories as they see fit, though I would want to introduce some metaplots as the game goes on.  The game is open to all writers playing characters of all genders, sexualities and backgrounds. It is intended to be a kink positive game, with consensual relationships of all forms encouraged.  In addition, we will be using real life face claims, for reference.

Ok, I looks like we have enough interest to push ahead to recruiting and starting things up.  The game would be open to not only Students and Faculty but there is a nearby city where a number of hedge witches have taken up residence.  Information on that as well as general lore for those not familiar or needing a refresher can be found in the link below.

The game would be following the show and just maybe filling in gaps using the novels, because the show and books are quite different.

And totally fine, the show is just mainly providing the framework for the lore I'll post so really people don't need to know much other than, do cool things with your fingers and make magic. LOL

AndyZ

Good to know.  I don’t plan to read the books anyway until I can hear well enough again for audiobooks.

Great.

Sorry.  I’m keeping an eye on it but don’t have an idea yet.  I remember there’s different styles of magic but can’t remember what they are.

I have a world building thread here that has all the 'schools' listed and goes over a bit of the lore, I was waiting to post it in the main thread until I saw enough interest to take it to recruiting and write up a character sheet, rules, FAQ, ect.

Nice.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Well it seems we have enough interest to move ahead so I've posted a character sheet up and have some of the NPCs up, will work on some addition info.  A link to the world building thread is also above for info on the magical schools and such.

Name: Kadir ‘Tabar’ Akkaya

Gender/Sexuality : Male/Sapiosexual

Age: 31 / July 17th

Birthplace: Istanbul, Türkiye

Year: NA

Occupation: Head of Security/L’encerclement Instructor

Magical Discipline: Physical

Physical Appearance: 6'2", 178lbs

Personality Traits: Sensual | Intellectual | Private | Thoughtful | Loyal | Cynical | Determined

Brief History:
Born in Istanbul, Kadir grew up in a family of ignorant of the magical world, his father working for a technology firm while his mother worked at her parent’s bakery.  He was happy to have an older brother who looked after him and, soon enough, a younger sister for himself to look after as the other brother.  As a student, he excelled at his studies when he applied himself but he often found himself getting distracted all too easily, enjoying learning from life as much from school.  His parents tried to be patient with him but it was his brother who kept him on the straight and narrow, pushing him to apply himself more to school and his studies.

It was in 2008 that he kept prodding his older brother to take him shopping for a gift for his mother, wanting to show her he was becoming a responsible man able to do it all on his own.  But it would become a memory that lived forever in his memory as a commotion caught his brother’s attention.  His brother ran ahead of him to see what was going on as Kadir trailed behind arriving in time to watch the exploding flare in his eyes, sharpened and debris pounding against him as the shockwave knocked him over.  In the hospital, he’d learn his brother had been killed in the initial blast but he had thankfully been far enough away from it to be in decent shape, just some minor injuries he would recover from quickly.  Although Kurdish separatist militants were suspected, no one was ever arrested or paid for the crime that took his brothers life.

The young man would recover physically but mentally he was struggling, suffering from PTSD and survivor guilt in the aftermath.  It was in this dark time that he had begun to realize he was feeling different, something off with the world.  Able to graduate, he was surprised when he received a letter to attend a university that he’d never applied too, finding himself being tested despite not having any money to offer.  It was here that he learned magic was real and that he had an aptitude for it.  At first, he was angry that such a thing existed but with such power they allowed the tragedy of his brother’s death and others to happen.  Angry, he tried to devour all what he could to learn magic that would serve the world and stop such evil from ever happening.

But while in University, he discovered a mentor who was willing to work with such a firery student, goad him to an understanding of the world and of magic.  He began to see just what a futile idea it was, that there was a balance to the world and what he wanted would mean taking away things from others.  He hated it, but the fire in him cooled a bit so instead he began to learn combat magic and other skills he could ensure those he cared about would always be safe under his care.  After graduation, he used his magic to gather enough resources to form a Private Military Company dedicated to protecting resources and supplies to those in need, willing to be the shield for those in need.  He’s also extended his care to magical families, making connections, to help cement his role and broaden the scope of his company.

Spending much of his off time learning various martial arts and martial ways around the world, he has continued to perfect how he used his magic in combat and combining it with other martial means.  With the recent reorganization at Brakebills, and the want to make combat magic teachable again, he has joined the staff as their combat magic expert as well as ensuring better campus security

What are the goals of your character both short and long term. Work? Family? Etc
Short Term: To teach students the responsibilities and care that is needed when using combat magic and further their full understanding of their magic capabilities.
Long Term: To better harness his magic and combine it into a new martial arts form for the community.

Name: Callum Toussaint

Gender/Sexuality : Male/Pansexual

Age: 21 / March 10th

Birthplace: Boston, Massachusetts

Year: Second Year

Occupation: Student/Guitarist/Drug Dealer

Magical Discipline: Natural Magic

Physical Appearance: Born with curly, bushy hair, it was the bane of his existence growing up, constantly being teased about it and his freckles.  But at some point, he began to enjoy not fitting in a mold, embracing a more rocker sensibility in his clothing with touches of what some would call feminine accents.  If he’s going out, he prefers to put his best effort into things but doesn’t mind dressing down and being comfy when he’s at home.

Personality Traits: Careful | Cynical | Foulmouthed | Confident | Spontaneous | Cunning | Spiteful

Brief History:
Born in the West Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Callum only has vague memories of his father who left the family years ago.  Growing up, he got used to living as a latchkey kid with his mother working two and three jobs at some points in their life, insisting on sending him to a Catholic school as he got older.  The bullying he had received in public school never really changed once he got into parochial school, in part from him not liking conforming.  It set him down a hard road that he know put him near the edge, not sure what he would have done if things hadn’t changed drastically in his life.  And change would come, but it would not be something he would ever have wanted too see invited into his family’s life.

It was in this time his mother told him about her cancer diagnosis, indicating she was going to fight as best as she could, but knowing it was not promising.  Going with his mother to chemo, seeing her try and put on a brave face even though financial and personal trouble was weighing heavy on her.  He felt something break inside of him in that time, a part of him growing cold and angry at the world.  Taking shelter in music, he lost himself in the rhythm and lyrics, finally picking up the guitar his father had left behind.  It was old and it took a bit to get it tuned, but he began to self-teach himself, taking any guidance he could get.  It was also during this point that he fell in with a bad lot, finding a girl he had gotten interested in, though he still prioritized being there for his mom.

Surprisingly, the cancer went into remission and his mother tried to get back into the swing of normal life, but medical bills suddenly were crushing them.  It was during a session bitching about the cost of things with his new friends that one suggested a way of getting some money, dealing to all those well-off kids in school.  They didn’t know how to score anything decent for fear of mugging, and for some reason he didn’t really care about these people, so he was in on it.  Hooked up with a supplier, he began to deal at school while keeping himself under the radar, too cunning to let anything ever come onto him.  It was the only reason he really went to school in the end as his grades were abysmal, certainly not looking at college.

He was working on the streets and the few gigs he could sell at of friends, still working on getting his own band together, when the invitation came surprisingly.  Ignoring it, he was surprised when taking a shortcut through an alley ended up in upstate New York to be greeted and pushed along to test.  The process would be eye-opening learning there was magic in the world, and he had a capacity for it.

What are the goals of your character both short and long term. Work? Family? Etc
Create better strains of product to put out and perfect his understanding of a multitude of products.
