I'm thinking that Helena has probably been aboard for at least a year or so... but it could be a fair bit longer.  In part, it depends on how many librarians / educators are aboard, and how senior it might be good (or interesting) for her to be among them.

Having spent time sitting in on "heads of department" meetings while the only member of her section could make for some interesting dynamics with other staff, for example.

Connections with Xavier

Ian - Xavier watched the trial and realized that while Ian was definitely guilty, more than little of the blame was shifted away from his peers and onto him. Always sympathetic to people like him who are victims of corpo greed, he kept an eye out for him, knowing SuperMax wasn't what he was made for.

Sasha - Being only ten years younger than her, Xavier was aware of the extent of her crimes and savagery before he even started working on the ship. He understands and respects what she's capable of, but unlike most he isn't afraid of her. He's worked hand in hand with people just as bad or worse, and his own hands are definitely plenty bloody. Due to his own enhancements and training, he's probably the guard who spent the most time around her aside from Anders.

Helena - Xavier has a shared love of literature with Helena so they bonded fairly quickly since he spent so much time in the library and checking out books. They have also worked closely together to create some shipwide advancements and programs. A few being the self-defense courses she convinced him to teach for prison staff, and the first aid certification courses and layout to make it easier for more varied staff to be able to help each other in cases of emergency.

Gia - During his extensive travels across the galaxy and his constant underworld dealings, he and Gia worked together enough for him to know her fairly well when she showed up on the ship. They have a good working relationship and he treats her well on the ship. 

Sophie - Not so much a connection as an awareness. He keeps a close eye on Sophie after having read her file for aggression towards authority figures and surprising capability for murder.

Grimm - Xavier watched Grimm's trial, and heard through the grapevine that there was a lot more to it than it seemed. After he came on the ship, he noticed that he seems to be a shell of a man and makes sure he gets some extra food now and then. He might hold the the activation codes for his triggers, but having him on his side can't be a bad thing.

Shannon - Having flown with some of the best pilots in the galaxy, Shannon is definitely up there and has highly impressed Xavier with her skills. He likes to give her pointers on the ins and outs of other aspects of their job when he can. He has also been willing to make use of her beauty and talents when it comes to dealing with the inmates, and compensates her for her help.

Alistair - Anti-tech cult psycho. Xavier spends as little time around him as possible to minimize the reasons he'd need to deck him in the jaw.

I think I've laid the groundwork for the connections I can think of so far. Let me know what's good, what needs changing, or if you want me to add anything before I put it on Xavier's sheet. He is also available for some romantic entanglements if anyone is interested.

Character History:

A former soldier in the military special forces, Janz served in some of the deepest operations in the furthest ends of the known galaxy. Even the unit he served in was a redacted unit, the deaths of his comrades never revealed, and their identities known only by a few. However, they needed to be proper humans, easily controlled by an authority that can bend them over and serve professionally not out of coercion but of sheer patriotism. Janz fought, led, and killed in the name of humanity, of the government, and in the darkest of his past, for money.

However, combat wasn't his complete know how, for Janz needed to be a family man after being released from his service. A new identity as Janz Klazinski, he attached the name 'Smith' into himself due to that being his callsign in the last unit he served in. He needed to learn how to cook (Still terrible), clean (Decent), socialize (50/50) and not be joke among his peers (Abject Failure). Given his youthful looks it would be common for Janz to end up being a punching bag or banter bait by older seniors, but he took it silently, in his stride.

The prison ship was one of his assignments as a new gig in the security forces. Janz passed the tests after some basic and advanced firearms training, given his own service rifle which he specced back to his old familiar firearm, and was told to guard the latrines of the ship. What happened next was a blur, as he found himself running towards an escape pod...



Relevant skills:

A former member of a Tier 1 organization, Janz knows his firearms, gunsmithing, survival skills and general fieldcraft. His forte might be killing, but three decades out of the military has dulled him somewhat.

He is comfortable in improvisation and using the least to make the most of them, but given more advanced tools found in proper civilization, Janz might find himself at the awkward end at times.

Hmm... I'm thinking of making something a bit interesting for this. The details of the prison riot are rather vague, so I feel I can capitalize on that. I was thinking of making a hacker/spy character with new tech, who was actually part of a team of criminals meant to break out some important mofo. The plan went south when the ship took severe damage when heading to the restricted zone. And no my characters motivation is to find out if his 'team' and target are still alive, where on the planet did he land, so he can get to the extraction zone where a stealth ship to evac with the target should be.

just some stuff to be in the background and mostly irrelevant. But more tools for the story teller to use to spice some things up if they'd want.

Great! In that case I'll plant her firmly in the crew position since we have a fair bit of security already - will be sending off a formal CS probably tomorrow if the below concept satisfies:

Livina Ketch is the daughter of a well known Colonel earth-side. Despite her years in service doing him proud flexing combat prowess and field medic know-how - benefiting largely from her mods and a quick, no nonsense attitude - she was never fully committed to the role. Something occurred in her past (a secret! dun dun dun) which led to her application aboard the prison vessel. Social leverage might snag her an XO position or similar. Alternatively, she could be a Gunnery Sergeant who keeps an eye on things admin-side while also flexing her martial skills for training and the like.

I also noticed we don't have an onboard psychologist or psychiatrist, so I'm not sure if that would be relevant to have the prisoners given regular evals. If so, while she would draw the short straw physically compared to the other PC's, I think someone with a knack for manipulation and drugs when things go tits up could be fun...
