Debutante - Interest Check for Freeform

The kingdom of Sentara lies in the middle of the continent, is well known for trading and diversity, and its princess Ehlana is about to turn eighteen.  Accordingly, an extravagant debutante has been scheduled on the date, and the nobility from all the other kingdoms are expected to attend, many as potential suitors (of every sex).

Here’s the idea: most players will be making their own nobles for their own kingdoms, although I expect that some players may want to make characters that are staff or are so epic in their own right as to get an invite.  You don’t have to flesh out the entire kingdom, but you should list the common knowledge.  Maybe it’s a mountain and most of the folks who live there are dwarves, but people are free to get more creative than that.  Keep in mind that the more powerful you are, the more others are likely to band together against you.

A concept I want to put down for this one is that in this world for nobles, marriage is far more about bearing children and forging alliances than love and sexual attraction, although magic can still help non-hetero and interspecies couples have kids together and such.  The reason is to make sure that this isn’t a game about my own sexual attraction but to turn it into a game where the right political maneuver can give you a shot.

I haven’t done a lot of games like this, but I like the idea and would be interested to see how it goes.  Of course, the question is whether there’s any interest.  If so, we can flesh things out more.

Edit 6/26: One rule I should put down since I imagine people asking about multiple characters.  I think a rule of one kingdom per person is fair.  You can totally make a bunch of staff if you want, and presumably you’ll be playing your own retainers.  There might even be a mysterious adventurer who got an invite to regale people with tales of their amazing deeds.  However, one kingdom per player would be best.

I'm down! :) I'm thinking a noblewoman from a race of golem people hoping to make bond with a lovely lady despite her heritage's desire for efficiency.

AndyZ

Sounds good ^_^ It’s easy to come up with some justification why there were a whole bunch of golem people made and that they ended up forming their own kingdom, maybe in an area that’s not as hospitable to organic life so nobody else wants the land.  Of course, you have final say.

I honestly love that reason to be honest :) Probably some very toxic mines with precious gems.

AndyZ

I’ll hold off on planning out too much with the early folks right now because, when we start, it’d be better to have some sort of round table discussion for brainstorming and all.

Planting a flag of interest here.  This looks like it has potential for a lot of fun.

Hopefully ^_^ I should also ask if folks would like a Discord server for the OOC stuff if things actually kick off.

Oh, and one idea I just had: there may well be someone who wants to coordinate the entire event, which would be pretty awesome.  I’m not overly knowledgeable on parties, and if someone wants to be the one coordinating the affair and figuring out what all it entails, it could easily be a setup all its own.  I’m sure someone on E has plenty of fun ideas for what they’d have if they threw a fantasy extravaganza party.

Hi,

Only here cause I saw Yuki respond! I could potentially play the party host, if given more information. I suspect it would be a very small, short-lived part?

AndyZ

I wouldn’t be in any hurry to have the party end, but it eventually would.  Other parties may start up as an excuse to get everyone back together again, though.

The idea would be that a kingdom princess is having a major event and there’s extravagance to celebrate with whatever fun fantasy stuff you come up with.  Magical fireworks?  Finest elven wines being served?  Lots of mystical bubbles?  Got to make sure we don’t look cheap.

I think I could have fun with it... as long as you are not starting immediately? If I have some time, I can actually do a write up describing the set-up... with bits of information from you about the world... that way you can decide if you'd like me to be involved. Alternatively, if I fail majorly, you can say no... my feelings do not get hurt, especially when I am trying something new  ;D

AndyZ

Definitely not starting immediately.  This is still in the Interest Check and I haven’t gotten that many nibbles.

The setting idea is that each player has a kingdom, and the one having the Debutante is mine, directly in the center and more focused on trade between the others than any specific innovations.  We also have a race of golem people who live in an area far less hospitable to organic life, but little else so far.

Given time to plan, if you think you could come up with some fun stuff and would have fun doing it, then by all means ^_^

Definitely -not- volunteering to coordinate events and stuff like that, but based off my own experience doing a similarly styled group, you could have jousts, melees, horse racing, feasts and dances and masquerades to celebrate the wedding.

I second melees just because women with swords. :)

This sounds really fun! I'd love to play a Kingdom high up in the mountains with alot of focus on tall pristine architecture reaching towards the Stars. Much of their food comes from livestock and trade as its hard to grow many crops that high and the people are typically short with soft dark skin. Their other biggest notable feature physically are their lungs capable of holding their breath for long times and exherting themselves fully even with the thin air high up in the mountains. Because of this however they are susceptible to getting "air drunk" where their normally stoic attitudes slip in the oxygen rich atmospheres outside of their kingdoms.

Their main exports are meteoric iron, star charts, and the few herbs and vegetables able to be grown in their climate which do not grow elsewhere. The mountains are pepers with debris from meteorites which they use for their metallurgy and occasionally trade chunks of it for supplies rare in the high altitude. However train relations are never ideal to keep a population fed, so there is great pressure for a political marriage into a kingdom that would provide them the needed food.

The do not boast a large army, with most citizens being artisans or scholars. Those who do choose to take up arms are a separate rank of people, both feared for their violence but respected for it, rather than being a uniform army these "Galacterian knights" so named for the designs on their armour to look like galaxies are individually skilled fighters who dedicate themselves to an specific art of combat, fearsome in a 1 vs 1 but oft unable to form a cohesive whole as an army.
And if we crash and burn and, cry in the rain. Is there any-way to escape the pain. So if tonight it all burns- down in flames. Will anyone re-meber out names!

Looks good to me ^_^ Welcome aboard

Yay! I know this is an interest check - do we have enough peeps to officially run it yet?

I’d like to try to get some more.  We only have three so far, and I never got an answer from everyone about Discord.

Gotcha, I didn't see the comment about discord because it wasn't in the main body. I'd rather play over fourms than discord personally

I still intend to have the game in forums, but it can be nice to have planning and OOC stuff done via Discord.  However, that only works if everyone joins it.  Otherwise, you get heavy feedback from half the group and the others get left out.

How many people do you desire if I may ask? We have me, you, Greenie, and Linguist :) I doesn't hurt to start with us and keep it open to others that want to join the intrigue.

AndyZ

I got a PM that we lost Green last week.  Personally, I try to start with a high number of people, because my experience has been that you'll usually have a third of the group just ghost and are very unlikely to get new folks as things move past the opening.

Green's back on E again, but yeah, I totally get that. :(
