Tales in Middle-Earth - A Lord of the Rings RP (IC started, still recruiting)

It all began with the forging of the Great Rings.
Three were given to the Elves; immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings.
Seven, to the Dwarf Lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls.
And nine, nine rings were gifted to the race of Men, who above all else desire power.
For within these rings was bound the strength and the will to govern over each race.
But they were all of them deceived......

I am looking to start a Lord of the Rings RP. This will be open to OC & Canon characters and ideally will be based around/during the events of the Lord of the Rings books/movies. Depending on the number of interested players this RP may serve as a sandbox within the Middle-Earth setting, but also our own retelling of the events of the main plot while also possessing room for other quests/adventures to play out. This is intended to be a long term game designed for players interested in world-building, plot development and collaborating on a larger narrative.

Will you be 'GMing' the story?
Yes & no. This is a collaborative narrative and anyone who wishes to participate will be expected to contribute to the overall experience. I will set up a Discord chat everyone will be required to join, we will use it to keep in contact, plot events, organise and world build but but ideally my GMing will be limited so I can also enjoy the RP. Preferable I will be more of a first among equals who might nudge things along or take the lead as we get started. If others wish to come forward and volunteer to help manage the game, it would be appreciated.

Who are the character options?
This game is open to canon & OC characters within the Lord of the Rings setting. I expect typical characters to be made up of Men, Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits and more than likely one or two more exotic options. The only significant limit I play put in place at the beginning is to say 'good aligned characters only.' So no characters on the Sauron/Mordor side of things. This is, however, a temporary limit intended to let us generate a healthy roster of characters to facilitate the plot and we can open evil characters at a later time.     

The game will be broken up into two types of threads. "Plot threads" which will focus on the main plot and "General threads" which will be open/sandbox RP in the setting. You may wish to play a character who has no direct involvement in the main plot and takes part strictly in the general threads, this is perfectly acceptable. I might advise keeping in mind whatever character you decide to play will still need to be someone with a reason to interact with the rest of the roster but you are free to explore options. The character sheet will aim to be quick & easy so taking up smaller, less important or 'for fun' characters should be viable.

The proposed idea is to set it during the events of the novels/movies, with the option of playing out our own version of the Lord of the Rings main plot.

Posting expectation would be relaxed. We're all busy with that RL thing. No need to make this a second job.

A question!  It's not really a part of LotR for various reasons, but what's the expectation/attitude towards sexy times here?  Just to get that out in front.

I wouldn't be manipulating the plot to create sexy times (in the way some E games put a sexy/erotic twist on a story) but given that its an least partly intended to be a sandbox if players want to nip off for some smut I would say 'feel free.'

So generally for E games I use a character sheet that's a bit on the brief side, so its easier to to fill out multiple times. So if you want to take on two characters that would be just fine. Beyond that I'll mostly trust players to only take on what they can handle.

Yes. Along side the sandbox option, we could run a plot mirroring the events of the the Fellowship/Quest to destroy the Ring. Ideally the presence of OC's and our own twists & turns could still make it our own story, while exploring a beloved fantasy adventure.

Role: Dúnedain of Arnor. (Horse rearer)
Skills/Special abilities:

• Excellent horsemanship.
• Song: knows the old Numenorean ballads, sings to the herd to communicate.
• Nomadic: capable of living and thriving off the land.
• Navigation: knows the north-west of Middle-earth well.
• Proficient with sword and bow: well enough to protect herself and hunt.

Personality:

• Independent: spending much of the year alone with the herd, Yavien is accustomed to her own company and way of doing things.
• Kind: soft hearted almost to a fault. She has no great curiosity of the halflings who occupy much of their old lands, but she respects their borders.  It is not her primary duty to patrol and protect these, but she has done this when there is need.
• Optimistic, positive, cheerful: At least for this people. They are a grim folk; so by another human’s standards she’s probably still a bit dour.
• Determined, stubborn: It’s not easy living on the lands alone.
• Nosy, bit of a gossip: If you want something known, tell Yavien. It’ll get around in no time.

History:

• Yavien’s ancestors arrived in Middle-earth prior to the fall of Numenor and originally settled in Eriador.  Her people dwelt in the lands of the Arthedain, first in Annúminas and then later, after it fell to ruin, in Fornost. 
  
  Born many generations after these lands fell to waste and ruin, Yavien is now numbered among the Rangers of the North.  Her role is chiefly to keep the herd of horses for the remaining rangers.  This is a nomadic existence whereby she follows the herd across the lands, teaching them the Numenorean tongue and keeping them safe from threats.  The stock are descendants of Numenorean steeds of old and, while most rangers do not take the horses with them on their patrols for maximum stealth, they herd is sustained for the day when the banners will be called and the king comes again.
  
  Both Yavien and the herd are most often found throughout Arthedain, on the grassy grounds of Fornost (Deadman’s Dike) or closer to the more permanent Dunedain settlement in Rhudaur during the winter.
  
  Yavien learned her craft as it passed down her family line.  Her father and mother have long since passed (her father of old age last spring, her mother birthing her last sibling, who did not survive).  She has an older brother of whom she sees little, but they are close and share a secret whistle to communicate and often leave small items for each other in the wilds: such as a bundle of kindling in a hollow, dried fruits hidden in a special nook,  a whittled flute beneath a certain clutch of stones.

I'm not sure whether to go with a Dunedain or a Gondorian, but either way my pc will have close ties to Rohan, if anyone wants a connection to Rohan.

   I am reading the Silmarillion right now (absolutely mind-expanding stunning reading there) and would at least like to follow this game from afar (lurker/reader).
   If anything I would be some comfort-loving-arm-chair-adventurer hobbit with a taste for the very good life (so much like real-life as it were). More interested in a tankard of mead and a good pipeful of smoke-weed than going off into the mouth of doom to burn a shiny piece of accessory-jewelry.
   Not because of fear, it just would not be comfortable.
