A conversation starter: Anyone see any cool birds lately? I saw a cormorant dive underwater today, but it never came back up. Supposedly, they can hold their breath for up to 15 minutes, so it probably swam out of eyesight and then emerged somewhere.

Also, I hope y'all are prepared for bird talk, because that's my theme for the next month.

Are crows typically aggressive toward other avian species? Probably a silly question, I'm not too familiar with birds outside of parakeets.

Crows are very protective of their territory and will gang up, or mob, other birds they consider a threat!

Hawks can and will target a crow as prey, but it's not their preferred diet. Crows are intelligent birds and rarely alone, so they can take on a solo hawk and chase it away.

My mother took on three of them not long after I moved out. There's only two now, but one in particular by the name of Turbo is pretty rambunctious, always trying to be the center of attention! Sometimes he'll throw a fit and start trying to 'shout' over everyone else if nobody is paying attention to him. He's also obsessed with his own reflection and always pecks and licks the mirror.

What's up with parents replacing us with pets!?

Actually, I kind of get it. Something fun to talk about! My uncle had 4 chihuahuas instead of kids and his stories were always a riot.

Actually, I kind of get it. Something fun to talk about! My uncle had 4 chihuahuas instead of kids and his stories were always a riot.

Well, funny story about that. Two of the birds were originally presents from me, to my partner on Valentine's day. Which wasn't a gift she rejected or disliked, but not long after that we ended up moving into an apartment together, and the landlord was pretty clear about not wanting us to bring the birds out of concern they might make too much noise. But my mom, who liked the two birds I originally bought for my partner, ended up getting the aforementioned Turbo, and quickly agreed to take those two in as well.

Ironically, those two are the most quiet and well-behaved birds I've ever seen. But my partner and I ended up adopting a cat instead, so it all worked out in the end!

Did your uncle have all four of them at the same time? That sounds both adorable and like fur-fueled insanity, haha. I can't say anything though, I've often thought of adopting more cats, but our baby Tiger has been an only fur child for so long that I'm afraid of her not taking well to a new member of the family.

I'm glad it all worked out! I've never had pet birds. As an adult I raised quail, but it was for meat and eggs and I eventually gave them all to a buddy. My away from home schedule made it too difficult. I can bring my dog with me. I can't bring two dozen quail lol!

My uncle did have all 4 at once. They had special outfits to wear that matched their personality. Bruce was typically dressed up as a great white shark because he liked to bite.
