What Makes You Feel Old?

Remembering that my first home computer had 128K of ram and no hard drive.  It was advanced though,  it had a composite display and  two 5-1/4 inch floppy drives. Internet would not be available for  8 years.

Ugh. Being exhausted after walking 3 miles on almost all flat terrain. I used to be able to do that in 1 direction, while smoking, and not break a sweat.

Being told by the poll-worker that she remembered when Little Oni wasn't old enough to vote (as we all trooped in to do our civic duty).

Going to pick up an order at a Pizza Hut I worked at, and talking with the store manager about how much it has changed, and yet not changed.

Mentioning about their book it program (kids read books over the summer and get free pizzas), and then she remembers coming to get her book it pizzas as a kid. 

Probably around the time I worked there, if not later.

Oh, and the kicker that really makes me feel old?  Turning 50.

What still makes me feel old is having conversations with people who are old enough to drink now who were born AFTER Septebmer 11th.

Some of the newer slang that's out! Skibidi, rizzler, kizzy, etc. I know their meaning and they're cute, just makes me feel old!

Similarly classic rock stations now make me feel old. I think I’ll just refer to them as Dad rock stations now.

Hearing the 20-somethings at work complain that they're going to be blind, deaf, and in walkers.  (To be fair, two of them have significant sports-related injuries from football and gymnastics.)  I felt obligated to point out that 'I'm supposed to be the old lady back here. '

What makes me feel old? Winter mornings. (Especially when I want to imagine that it's spring already!)

STILL, the fact that people born after September 11 are old enough to drink (and have been for more than three years now) and are old enough to have voted in their second presidential election in 2024.

Also, the fact that I can remember a time when there were fewer than a million internet users worldwide. My parents were on the internet in the 80s, and actually on a primitive preinternet equivalent (through consoles at UCLA) back before there was a real internet. So I can't honestly say I can remember a time when the internet was unavailable to me, but I can remember when my family was the only one I knew that had an internet connection.

Also, when the world population was only a touch over five billion.

I just keep thinking about the fact that I remember a time not everyone had internet in their home and if they did? My brain just thinks about that 'dial up' tone--if you know it, its unforgettable.

Man, that makes me feel old sometimes, even though I objectively know I'm not old.

There are people alive today, modern internet users, who have never heard a dial-up tone. A friend of mine regularly played MMORPGs back before WOW was around, and he told me once that he could tell just from the sound of the dial-up connection, whether the game was going to load up or not.

Similarly, I've encountered people who have never heard a busy signal over the telephone.

Similarly, I've encountered people who have never heard a busy signal over the telephone.

Having to tell your siblings to get off AIM so you could call your friend ;; I feel so old.

Branching off that, the fax machine was making its sounds this morning and the youngest person in the office had no clue what it was. They know that faxes are a thing, but they never heard a fax machine go off, so it was funny explaining it.

So, sometimes I lean into the fact that I'm the oldest person in the back room.  Due to the fact that I work way early and Mr. Oniya works 'store hours', we commute separately.  He takes the car, and I walk.  (It's not a terrible walk, or I wouldn't have applied at that store.)  There happens to be a bridge that goes over the Amtrak line about halfway between the house and the store.

So last week, when we had about an inch of snow predicted, some of the guys were talking about 'calling off tomorrow,' and I got to point out that 'Kids these days.  I walk two miles to work, in the snow, uphill both ways!'

My legs and back have been so sore the past two days. I got out of the truck and felt like I was gonna fall and crumble to the ground. I didn't, thankfully.

I remember seeing it on tv, but it must have been a rerun, because I wasn't born until after it had come to an end.

No apologies needed. Other things that make me feel old would be hearing "The Unforgiven," "Song and Emotion," and "I'm Sorry Miss Jackson" on a classic rock station, each on separate occasions.
