I’d be interested. Not sure on powers yet as my go to character’s powers already seem to be claimed, but I do love a good superhero story.

I think I'll go ahead and try to get a proper recruitment pitch up into the first post of this thread over the weekend or shortly thereafter.

Quote from: Hatless on April 12, 2022, 05:27:17 AMSounds fun. :-)

Any sort of guidelines on powers? Like strength levels that are acceptable, powers that might be off the table, etc.? Or is the superhero stuff so secondary that it doesn't really matter? :P

My first instinct was to grab up invisibility and make it fairly uncontrollable. All of a sudden, the straight-A student aiming for valedictorian is having to explain to the counselor and her very strict parents why she's 'missing' classes. Maybe a dash of telekinesis?

This sounds fine. I wouldn't say no to it off the cuff.

Powers that're off the table would be kink fulfillment powers; really broad and/or vague powers (e.g. 'I control quantum' or 'I control gravity'); powers that involve other dimensions/realities in some way; messing with time.
Thank you, fellow Elliquiyan, and have a wonderful day.

Tentatively peeking in!

Love my bookish types so a quiet gal with a sound based power might be interesting. Or maybe Poison Ivy-esque....

That and/or a preppy SoCal 'influencer' (at least she was popular back home, until her wealthy parents unceremoniously dumped her in this lil' backwater town where she's actually not fitting in easily) who might be very fast. Not like breaking time levels of the Flash so much as she can clear the town end to end faster than the 30 seconds her gel nails need to dry. But I'm still iffy on that one.

Been a while since I dipped into this genre so I need a refresher on superpower tropes.

ShadowFox89

The latter sounds like she would be getting very annoyed eyerolls from my goth gal :P

May change this. May do a high-school hockey player who ironically has ice powers.

Or do some high-school singer in a band with electric powers still.  Anyone want to be in a band? Haha

Currently I’m thinking of doing a rebel type girl who likes to buck authority. Give her the classic set of super strong and durable mixed with a bad temper. The kind of kid who really wants to do good, but doesn’t know how.

Fiadh

That sounds like a fun character type, Thunder!

Question for CH: do the affected teens come with increased durability (at least compared to regular humans) or are they completely mundane besides this one special ability they each possess? Curious how this will impact events and potential fights if they can crumple from a good punch unless their power is being super strong/resilient.

Also is anyone considering some sort of regenerative ability / healing?

I'll give it some thought. At first blush it seems more broad than I'd want to allow.

My initial thought is that affected teens are basically mundane besides their special ability. The caveat being that a character could generally expect to use their power and not harm themselves in doing so. A character'd generally be exempt from mundane concerns. For example, in the case of someone who is capable of super-speed they would be generally able to see and hear things 'faster' than a normal person could so that they could move super-fast and not take like three steps and hit a wall because their senses can't cope with how fast they're going. The same super-fast person would also be able to withstand the wear and tear the super-speed puts on their joints so they don't blow out their knees and tear all their tendons the first time they run super-fast. A player could opt to have their character start to eat a lot more to fuel their super-fast-ness, but I wouldn't require someone to and they could just be able to have all of this extra energy to move really fast because alien space technology that is so advanced as to be indistinguishable from magic. Basically, I'm saying to hand-waving the 'logical' negative consequences of having super powers. Someone could still misdirect a super-fast person, Wyle E. Coyote style, and just because they can run at near mach speeds without their knees getting crushed to powder doesn't mean a shotgun blast to center mass isn't something that'll ruin their day.
Thank you, fellow Elliquiyan, and have a wonderful day.

Fiadh

Gotcha. That sounds good to me. I was thinking of giving my preppy gal a big appetite, so I could work that in.

Will you be putting up a CS code soon or are you waiting for more interest in the idea?

Cold Heritage

I'll put up the CS code soon™. I counted ten people expressing interest and that's probably enough to give it a kick at the can.
Thank you, fellow Elliquiyan, and have a wonderful day.

Cold Heritage

I've edited the first post with some guidelines, lore, and CS code. I'm only posting because I'm not sure if editing my previous post would alert everyone to changes and thus this post. Happy Easter to those who observe it.
Thank you, fellow Elliquiyan, and have a wonderful day.

#40
Name: Niko Gryphon
Age: 18
Sex: Male
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Hetero

Appearance: 6' 1", white hair, green eyes, athletic/muscular build
Faceclaim: Luke Guldan

History: His dad and his grandfather both served in the Marines and then came home to serve as police men. It was in his blood. Niko saw drugs as being one of the main problems in modern society. It would be easy to say that the war on drugs had little effect on the world but that sounds like you're giving up. His goal since he was six was to be like the men in his family. Go to the armed forces, become a Marine then come back and serve on the police force.

At ten it changed from staying in the police force to moving to the DEA and going undercover. Some enterprising drug dealer noticed that a lot of the harder drugs were all but absent in New Lund and decided to carve out his own niche and hopefully an empire. Hick cops would never catch him and his crew. It didn't matter which designer drug it was that became the latest craze at high school, it was one of them. Every few months they seemed to change so people didn't get bored. This one had both hallucinogenic properties and brought on a lot of aggression. That is what the coroner said to the men of the Gryphon family when he described why one of the students had shot Niko's mom in the face five times.

Between his father and grandfather, he has been training to follow in their footsteps for a long time. Now he trained to cope with his grief and loss. He isn't some puritanical zealot though. He doesn't give a crap about teenagers doing some weed or getting drunk once in a while to blow off some steam (ok he would never touch the stuff), but organizations like the Cartels are a blight on the world.

Personality:The best way to describe Niko is probably focused. He pictures himself a modern-day knight, mainly because they were the heroes his mother first read to him about. He has always believed that criminals should be brought to justice for their crimes. He is mostly quiet and somewhat awkward. He genuinely likes people and is helpful, he just doesn't exactly know how to fit in.

Another notable trait about the young man is his sardonic wit and extremely black sense of humor. Most of the time this just goes on in the confines of his own mind. A large part of him really wants to fit in, go to school dances or make a few friends.

Powers:
Silver Energy Constructs Niko can generate solid energy constructs out of the element of plasma in simple forms. His first heroes were the knights of Camelot, so his energy constructs tend to resemble a sword and shield. He has to understand how something works so nothing with moving parts. The energy constructs are exactly the same colour as his hair.

Minor Regenerative Healing Factor He recovers from most things about three times faster than regular folk. He could grow something like a finger back in six weeks.

Abilities:
Academics: He can strongly focus and does the homework within a few hours of getting home. He isn’t naturally gifted, he gets good marks because he knows how to study and he needs to.
Athletic Niko being athletic, joined the high school gymnastics, swim and track teams as a way of cross training. He is a natural strategist and on the football team because he loves football. He plays both left tackle and backup quarterback.
Close Combat: Niko has been taking boxing, wrestling and MCMAP [Marine Corps Martial Arts Program]  since he was six. He got his black belt when he was thirteen and is still training.
Computers He's not hacking NASA or anything, but he knows his way around a computer and how to file reports, do research and things along these lines.
Detective You can't join the DEA without any detective abilities. Has been studying this and 'helping' his dad since he was six (obviously less gruesome cases). After his mom was killed this became a much more serious thing.
Grew up on a Ranch Has had to deal with all the regular ranch hand chores (animal handling, repairing vehicles/barns/fences). He is comfortable riding horses.
Medicine: Has taken all the civilian Red Cross courses.
Pilot: Niko can drive a motorcycle and his pickup. They were never rich, so he got them from the junkyard and learned to fix/rebuild them with his dad.

Limitations/Weaknesses:
Silver Energy Constructs His energy constructs tend to be simplistic. He needs to understand how something works in order to create it. As far as machines go, that might include his bike and his truck but mostly it will be things like a shield or a blade. He will never make a gun.

Culture: Niko had a lot of full days until he got to the point where he was confident in his abilities. That didn't leave a lot of time for regular hanging out with a lot of people or watching endless movies and cartoons. He misses a lot of references and has to look them up later.
Guns/Firearms: Before his mom was killed he could put the eye out on a mannequin at thirty yards. Now he can pass the test to get into the police force before he needs to puke.
Shy: He's not used to having friends. If you took away his extracurricular activities, he would be considered all but a shut in. It takes an effort for him to let down his guard and be 'normal'
Subterfuge: He can tell when someone is lying and even avoiding a subject. He's just not a good liar himself. He needs this skill if he's going to go into undercover work and has joined the drama club to get over some of his shyness and learn how to act.
Survival: Has gone camping a lot as a child. It was always a family thing. Hasn't been camping in a long time now. He could probably light a fire if he needed to but all that hunting/fishing stuff has atrophied.

Equipment
Pickup Truck: An old 1953 Chevy Pick-up truck old 1953 Chevy Pick-up truck

Motorcycle A supped up    1990 Harley Davidson FLSTF Fat Boy motorcycle

On/Offs: Bowen's O/O's
Character Theme: He sees himself as a knight or protector. The guy in the white hat. He hates bullies.
Plot Seeds: Niko is pretty wound up. It would be good to develop friends and maybe a romance to ease up and get out of his head space. He would also like to figure out where these powers came from and if there is some sort of price tag attached to them.

Valerian

Name: Cassie Hoffman
Age: 18
Sex: Cis-female
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Hetero
Appearance: With straight brown hair and brown eyes, Cassie considers herself very ordinary looking.  Largely because her mother actively encourages such forms of self-expression as tattoos and piercings, she has steadfastly avoided getting either.  She wears glasses and also has a vaguely heart-shaped birthmark on the inside of her right elbow.  Again partly as a form of rebellion against her mother, she dresses in down to earth fashion, mainly jeans and blouses, with little jewelry or makeup.
Faceclaim: Jordana Brewster

History: For a time when Cassie was a child, her family was the talk of the town, and not in a good way.  Her mother, Elizabeth, had always been considered a little strange, given her interest and belief in all things supernatural, from aliens to shakras to Zen Buddhism.  And when proof of alien life was revealed, that certainly didn't help matters.  Bradley, her husband, seemed to be all right with her odd ways, but then one day, without a word, he packed up and moved out while his wife was out shopping with Cassie and her sister, Tricia.  After this, Elizabeth rapidly became stranger.

In a dramatic move, she quit her job as a real estate agent and set herself up as a psychic, offering readings to anyone with the fee.  Genuinely believing herself to have paranormal abilities -- and now calling herself Star -- she focused all her energy on developing her "abilities", often at the expense of her daughters.  Since her new occupation is very unpredictable, and given that New Lund isn't exactly a bustling metropolis, the family is often in rather shaky financial shape.  Tricia, four years older than Cassie, has for several years been forced to be the responsible one, often working whatever odd jobs she can find to keep them from bankruptcy.

Both daughters had some money in their college funds that their mother couldn't touch, though Tricia has been putting off going until she can help Cassie get through college and be independent from their mother.

Personality: Shy and a little awkward, Cassie tends to be empathic and kind towards others.  Having spent years dealing silently with her own dysfunctional family, she is very aware that everyone has their own secret troubles, and sometimes a small, friendly word or gesture, even from a stranger, can go a long way.  She is rarely seen without a book within reach.

Powers: Teleportation: Cassie can teleport easily within line of sight, and with more difficulty when she can't see where she's going.  This is primarily a psychological limitation -- naturally, as she's learned about her power she's become more and more alarmed at the possibility of materializing inside a solid object.  It's also much easier for her to teleport someplace that she's seen at least once, though in emergencies she can teleport 'blind' if she's willing to take the risk.  It is also possible for her to take extra weight with her when she teleports, such as her backpack, though she hasn't yet been able to test whether or not she can bring another person with her.

Abilities: Cassie speaks German well and gets top grades in all her classes except phy. ed., as she hates team sports and doesn't really put any effort into learning them.  She reads a lot and as a result knows at least a little about a wide range of subjects.  Math is her best subject, with even her teachers not really knowing just how good she is at it.  She's always available to tutor anyone who's looking for extra help.

Limitations/Weaknesses: Though she wants very much to make friends, Cassie has always been socially awkward and hasn't had a close friend since grade school.  Most of the students she talks to these days are those she's tutoring.

Ons & Offs: https://elliquiy.com/forums/index.php?topic=10385.0

Plot Seeds: She's always trying to do the right thing in any given situation, which could lead her into all sorts of interesting trouble.

I love a good superhero game and I have notions. Plus, I just binged both seasons of Euphoria and now have later grades High School game hankering.

Out of curiosity and with the idea I have in mind, in which section would you be putting this...for science, of course?

Damn it....and here was me saying "no more group games", nice one, Tinker.

Quick question. Being a Midwesterner myself I feel the need to ask, would a girl be allowed to participate on the football team? The gal I’m making would be a beefcake built like a Mac truck kind of girl before her super strength manifests, and would be very head strong, demanding she can do just as good if not better than the boys on the football team. If she’d be allowed on the team she will have a good relationship with her teammates but have a constant worry of “if I’m not the best they will kick me off the team” feeling. But if she is not allowed she will have pestered the coach and team and done everything she could think of to get on the team up to this point. I’m fine with either, just wanted to ask you since it’s your world.

Fiadh

Will probably complete the CS for my preppy gal tonight! Also ruminating on a second OC.

Sure. I don't think it'd be quite as progressive as letting her be quarterback, though, and her reception would be somewhat mixed.

Name: Serenity MacGoy
Age: 18
Sex: Female
Gender: Cis-gendered female
Sexual Orientation: Lesbian

Appearance: 178 cm (5’ 10”) and muscular. Serenity has long slightly curly hair that is firey red and drops to just below her shoulders. She is broad, beefy, and not a person you would want to mess with. Her eyes are green.
Faceclaim:

History: Serenity grew up the middle child and only girl in your typical farm family. Raised to have manners and appreciate a hard days work she is no stranger to getting her hands dirty and helping out on the family farm with both crops and animals. Being the middle child she always felt like she had to work harder to be noticed. Being in a family of mostly boys she also learned to be a bit more rough and tumble than other girls her age. Serenity always hung out with the boys at school, and was very interested in sports. From a young age she wanted to prove that she was just as capable if not even more so than any of the boys.

What had started out as middle child syndrome however turned into a bit of an obsession as Serenity grew older and older. Her short temper didn’t help much and she gained a reputation of being a trouble maker and even a bully at times. With frequent visits the the principal’s office for getting into fights Serenity never seemed to know what the words back down meant.

This proved both a blessing and a curse by the time she reached high  school. Having pursued her goals she had played club football all the way up to freshman year, but the school and football coach wouldn’t hear having a girl on the team. They suggested softball, gymnastics, track and field, soccer, volleyball, even cheerleading. Any sport that had a girl’s team. But Serenity would hear none of it. She practiced with her older brother who was already on the team and harassed the coach day in and day out to let her on the team. After a year of trying and begging and fighting an opportunity finally presented itself. Well, sort of… the night before the big rivalry game a huge number of player were out sick and unable to play. Along with this illness a number of the linebackers on the football team had some “accidents”. The first two were a legitimate one, they had been in a car crash. But the two back up players had mysteriously managed to break their legs. This left the team a player short and unable to compete that night. The coach was nearly pulling his hair out panicking about how they would manage to scrounge up enough players to compete in the game. And there waiting for him at the field was his answer, Serenity. With nothing left to lose and no other options she was suited up and out on the field as a linebacker. All of her hard work had finally paid off, and she proved herself out there on the field. With seconds left and the Honeyguides in possession they went for a long desperate pass to take the lead. And after the snap with just inches to go Serenity made the final tackle, halting the ball at the 1 yard line on 4th down and ending the game with the Varangians in the lead. From that day forward she has been a member of the team.

Though she had achieved her goal it did not come without its share of drawbacks. Only some of the team accepted her within their ranks, and students at the school would sometimes whisper behind her back unflattering things. Serenity practiced twice as hard as anyone else on the team to prove her worth and that she earned her position on the team. But she still has a long and difficult road ahead.

It is now senior year and the Varangians have a real chance at making it all the way to state and winning the championship. It is all Serenity yearns for, to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that she is worthy of her spot on the team, and to comings on as the first female college football player.

Personality: Serenity is boisterous, crass, and rough. Just another one of the boys some would say. She has a short fuse and a nasty temper, and has no problem solving her problems with fists rather than words. Though underneath her rough exterior it isn’t all rough and mean. Though none may call her sweet or girly, Serenity has a fiercely loyal disposition and will be your ride or die friend. And she knows how to act civilized, her parents raised her right. She just chooses to demonstrate her manners in a selective fashion. The best way to describe her would be as the quintessential jock. She is also quite the rebel and does not like authority very much. Being a trail blazer herself Serenity likes to fight the power and has a bit of an issue with following rules.

Powers:
Super strength:
Serenity was always strong, but now her strength is unmatched. Able to lift cars and farm equipment with her bear hands, pull trees up by the root, and hurl large objects long distances. Though her strength is not limitless she will push her powers to their limits just like she has always pushed herself.

Durability: To match her incredible strength Serenity has also gained super durability. She can smash through walls, make craters in concrete, and even be hit by a moving vehicle without sustaining any serious damage to herself. She’s not sure if she is bullet proof, but isn’t too keen on finding that one out.

Abilities: Serenity has known how to drive a stick shift since she was 12, and knows how to operate and even repair a variety of farm equipment. She isn’t the brightest bulb in the box but she isn’t dumb. She is semi-fluent in Spanish. Serenity is also pretty good with a gun. Her father taught her how to shoot and she has gone on many hunting and fishing trips with him. She knows how to live off the land and survive out in nature if she has too. She is a linebacker on the high school football team.

Limitations/Weaknesses:
Serenity is not super popular. Her personality and force of will is somewhat off putting and she has trouble relating to others or making friends off the football team.
She is also a struggling student and barely manages to keep her grades above failing. She often needs tutoring to help her pass her classes.
Serenity has a huge temper. She can easily be goaded into doing something she probably shouldn’t if someone insults her or eggs her on. She has been in many fights because of this.
She is also quite gullible. Not being super smart she is prone to believe what she is told and can be tricked into doing things a bit too easily.
She is very self conscious, and judges her worth based on how well she can perform both on and off the field. She is constantly worried about not being enough and losing all she holds dear because she isn’t good enough.

Ons: Good stories, character development, fun and interesting role plays. I am not here for the smexy times so while I don’t mind characters flirting or getting to sexy times I do not wish to RP those moments.
Offs: OP or Mary Sue/ Gary Stu characters. Again, nothing against the sex, I just don’t wish to RP the dirty deeds.

Character Theme: Green Day’s She’s a Rebel
Plot Seeds: Serenity may have bullied some of the other characters in the past and could thus have a redemption arc where they reconcile.
She is also not very bright and would likely have worked with or is currently working with anyone who tutors other students.
Serenity would be one of the first to mete out vigilante justice.
