MC for City of Mist

With the announcement of  Tokyo:Otherworlds KS coming out in April and admittedly watching the saving throw Legacy campaign, I’ve gotten really in the mood for a bit of City of Mist which is a noir/supers hybrid game that rules wise plays out like a PbtA and Fate hybrid.

To quote the summary of City of Mist since they put it in betterds than I can “City of Mist is a role-playing game of film-noir investigation and super-powered action. It is set in a modern metropolis rife with crime, conspiracies, and mysteries. The protagonists are Rifts, ordinary people who became the living embodiment of a legend, their Mythos. While your Rifts may seek to strike a balance between the mysterious nature of their Mythos and their mortal aspirations, the powers within them always threaten to tear their lives apart. They have unwittingly become a part of a secret world of clashing stories, and soon other legends will come looking for them with demands.”

I know it’s a bit of a long shot but would love to play in a game if I can find someone willing to run a game.

I'm interested in City of Mist as well. Unfortunately, I've never played it so I wouldn't be a good choice for GM.

Oh, if there's still any interest in this, I can run City of Mist, I've run it plenty of times (though honestly I've not sure I've ever played the core setting, as I mostly use it for running miscellaneous superhero games). Any specific type of game/type of character you were envisioning?

Oh I'd definitely be interested in this haha if you're still offering. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you been a bit busy. I'd really enjoying running  it in the standard setting. As for what type of game was thinking probably fairly noire mixed with supers. As for the character was thinking of the character being a detective or possibly something like a lounge singer with the classic vigilante angle, possibly something like a criminal going after people worse than them. Pretty normal stuff, would tailor it a bit depending on what the game is like and what other cast members we get.

Whoooo, okay, had to sit down and get this all typed up and thought out. If this game pitch sounds good to y'all, we can move forward with making characters and stuff. If anyone else stumbles across this thread and wants to play, let me know, otherwise I'll probably try to recruit 1-2 more from the GM seeking group forum. 

Narrative Pitch

It rains a lot in the city. There’s a lot of metal and all of it has a touch of rust on it, a patina of corrosion you can scrub off, but always comes right back.

There’s an analogy in that, somewhere.

The city is down on its luck. It’s got a port and manufacturing when everyone wants tech and services. It has too many blue collar workers, too much money flowing out and not enough flowing in. But it’s your home and it’s got something important, something that kept you here or maybe trapped you here even before you woke up.

And then you had your big awakening and now you’ve got problems you can’t even put names to, problems like you’re involved in a big, ugly power struggle where everyone has an agenda poured straight from a storybook but instead of kissing princesses and fighting giants, people are getting killed. Real people, with real blood spilled on the pavement, because some made-up idea too big for its britches has an agenda too vast and weird for you to comprehend. And now you’re one of them, one of those ideas, one of those legends walking the city and sometimes it's hard for you to even remember how you lived before, all the vagaries and falsehoods of being a ‘person’ when you’re obviously, absolutely something so much more. Something bigger and better than the rest of them, the Sleepers, could ever be.

But you're not bigger than the mob war, because they've got guns and knives and supernatural powers just like you and there's a lot more of them. Irons, Gentili and Zhao in a shoving match over the same bits of real estate, trying to milk the most out of the city before it runs dry.

That’s what the rest of the world sees. But you know it goes deeper than that. They’re playing out some deeper, darker conflict between whatever entities are taking up space in their heads.

And unfortunately for you, you’ve got an iron in this particular fire. Time to decide whether to try and pull it out or shove it in.

Game Pitch

Players are recently awakened Mythoi in a city without a name that has an ongoing conflict between three crime bosses and their criminal empires,  Edgar “Heavy Hitter” Irons, Angelina “Big Momma” Gentili and Wei “Doesn’t Have a Nickname” Zhao. Players must have at least one tie to the crime boss Edgar Irons. Be creative with this! It doesn’t have to be a bad or a strong tie–maybe you work for him, maybe he killed your parents, maybe you’re his sibling or his best friend since high school. Maybe your Mythoi wants him dead or loves him.

When designing your character, think in noir tropes. The city has the Internet, it has modern stuff, but it's also painfully old school. Union busters, shakedowns for protection money, back room dealings, all of that stuff. The police are either corrupt or simply too burnt out to be useful. Make proactive characters who have strong goals and ties to the city/NPCs in it–the game will have a background plot, but I tend to run things a bit sandboxy at the best of times, so the players should be driving where they want things to go. Make your Myth have strong, interesting motivations. One of the cool things about City of Mist is you were this mostly regular person and you've got this Myth just hanging out inside you--how does that change who you are and what you can accomplish?

Paperwork

Game will be played on the forum with an IC and OOC thread. I'll be looking for another 2 players, at most, on top of the ones we already have. No copy of the game is required to play, it's fairly straightforward though it helps if you have familiarity with Apocalypse World or any of its variants. As this is E, I have to state that I have no idea what the rating for this game will be, but I'm not planning to shoot for X-rated, so anything anyone wants to play out anything more risque can go in a side thread on the forum like a solo game. The main thread will probably never get above an R.

Okay, I think that's everything! TL;DR city embroiled in a gang war run by supernatural entities and your character is an awakened individual with a myth inside them who has some kind of tie to a crime boss.
