As much as I like bondage and non-con, sometimes, this is probably going to be [Light]. Too much kink would rather get in the way of what I wanna do with this.

Also, while I want to accommodate sexy stuff and relationships-- but don't want things to get completely farcial- this is ultimately going to be a story-focused game more than sexy times.

(EDIT: This is going to be a systemless freeform game. With some form of abbreviated 'sheet' like in other Elliquiy games rather than a detailed character sheet. If you WANNA make a sheet, tho, go wild.)

Hi there. I'm CrownedSun, and I've been thinking about trying my hand at running a group game,-- specifically a somewhat structured experience, in a sci-fi setting, with some very rough pulls from things like "Star Trek", "Battlestar Galactica", and even some "Stargate: SG1" while still being very much it's own thing. I was also thinking of setting this in the world of Aeon, the sci-fi setting of the Trinity Continuum, which I'll talk about a bit later if you are unfamiliar.

My rough thought is that this'd be a game for a small-to-mid sized group, who would most likely play the officers/crew of a spaceship engaged in a top-secret deep space mission of discovery.

Time would be split between, you know,--
a. Activity on various worlds and sites of interest that the group are exploring.
b. Social stuff on the ship itself, which is basically the "home" for the group, who are on their own the vast majority of the time.
c. Trying to solve specific dangerous/urgent situations that arise, AS they arise, largely without outside support.
d. "Shore Leave" on a human colony, allied alien world, or even back on Earth. (rarely)

I figure this is a game that allows a lot of slow-paced action, lots of comraderie and messy interpersonal relationships. The kind of thing where, sure, technically there are probably "Ranks" and such... but, in general, the crew are going to fast end up becoming more family than anything else. So, romance and sex stuff is entirely possible. That said, this isn't JUST a social game, and the characters will face dangers and mysteries as well that they ultimately need to overcome.

(While Aeon is very much a tabletop game with a system, honestly, I'm divided on whether I want people to have character sheets or just to play a game in the world itself. Even if "full sheets" end up not being a thing, that said, some thought will probably be given to overall capabilities and what individual players can and can't manage. If you are interested in this, feel free to specify rather you'd be interested in a "sheetless" freeform game, a more structured tabletop system game, or if you're fine with either. Myself, I will admit, I lean toward sheetless freeform but am fine with system-based dicey stuff too.)

The Mission: Officially, the crew of the UNS Odyssey (a UN-owned "Leviathan" jump ship on permanent loan to the Aeon Trinity) is a deep-space vessel,-- specifically modified for long-term independent survey and exploration,- preparing to embark on a multi-year mission with a crew of several hundred hand-picked from amongst humanities finest. The buzz on the OpNet, when the mission is mentioned at all, suggests that it's "a bit like Star Trek" and conjecture on what the ship will be doing over it's multi-year mission is somewhat vague. Even less is known about the ship's somewhat enigmatic Captain,--

--in truth, the Odyssey is being sent out into deep space on a very very specific mission and goal. It's officers all, as a one, understand that human destiny has been co-opted by a race of energy-beings known as the Doyen whose exact goals are unknown. The Odyssey's Captain knows the threat posed by these entities intimately-- having once been possessed by one of their kind,- and is willing to go to any extreme to see Humanity protected from these bodiless monsters.

The Captain: ...I will probably be playing the Captain myself.. XD

That said, I would be delighted to let someone else play "her" if they have a cool idea that roughly gels with the facts below. She is a member of a Psi Order called the "Chitra Banu", thought destroyed and popularly believed to have 'betrayed' humanity to its Aberrant enemies. She is, primarily, a Scientist-- but survived the Purge of her Order twelve years ago alongside a handful of others and participated in it's rebuilding, a somewhat shadowy existence that has given her a much more diverse skillset and a lot of "leadership experience". She was selected to lead this mission,-- the UN creating a false identity for her in the doing, due to the fact that her /actual/ identity is... problematic.. and believed dead- due to her scientific background, her experience operating on her own with limited backup, and her understanding of the Doyen.

Officers & The Crew: The crew, as a whole, is handpicked...

...but not always from just the "best and brightest". If someone wanted to bring, like, a street rat or a criminal or something WEIRD onto the crew? That's very possible because, due to the secret nature of the Odyssey's mission a certain amount of leeway is given to people that have had... extraterrestrial experiences. Especially ones involving the Doyen! Other members of the crew are going to be members of the Aeon Trinity, a 'strange' organization that sorta works with but is independent of the United Nations and who is technically in charge of the Odyssey, with an emphasis on people who are loyal to the Trinity and good at getting things done and/or have skills that the organizations thinks will be helpful... even if they're not the sort you'd expect to "typically" find on a mission like this. Last, well--

--most of the player characters in Trinity games tend to be "Psions". These are people who have psionic abilities,-- Biokinesis, Clairsentience, Electrokinesis, Psychokinesis, Telepathy, Teleportation, and Vitakinesis. Other Quantakinetics, who would pretty much have to be members of the Chitra Banu, are also possible but I wouldn't want more than one or possibly two other than the Captain. The Chitra are supposed to be rare, are generally thought to be bad people, and the Order wouldn't want to overload the Odyssey with too many people with their abilities. The cool thing about Psions is, basically, that "latency" in a given ability is somewhat rare-- you can't just put anyone in a Promtheus Tank and expect them to become a telepath. Powerful members of the aptitudes, especially, are somewhat rare. While the Orders aren't going to "dunk" an obvious sociopath or other malcontent, in general, if you have the potential then... that helps..

Lastly, of course, some crew members are going to be... well. The best of the best! n', in the Trinity Continuum, the "Best of the Best" is often going to be someone that the Aeon knows is called a "Talent". Talents are not generally known in the setting as a whole, but basically, these people are... just folk.. but, a little more so. They're really good at what they do. They are lucky! They tend to raise above the crop and you can count on them in a pickle. In other words, they're protagonists, even if probably don't know that there's anything particularly unusual about them.

Lastly, of course, there are.. unusual characters of other sorts that might find themselves on the Odyssey..!

Wanna play one of the Alien Qin, or a Chromatic? Maybe even one of the Coalitions "Phile"? They could easily end up on this mission. Honestly,-- there WILL be a Qin on the crew- see below. Maybe your character is a "wild psychic", aka, a "Psychomorph". Noteworthy for being able to develop multiple aptitudes and for having never been dunked in a prometheus tank. Maybe you're even an Aberrant,- perhaps from Eden, or perhaps in some other fashion allied with Humanity, or, maybe someone that the group will meet at their first "Site" and end up allying with. Aberrants, for the record, are basically superheroes but it's more complicated than that and they have very strong powers. Maybe you're one of Nippon's secretive "Superiors"-- stronger, faster, smarter, more charismatic than baseline humanity but not as out of control as an Aberrant!

You might even be something else. :-)

Important Roles: There are a few "roles" on the ship that, if not taken by a player, WILL be taken by an NPC. These are looked at briefly below.

the XO: You all know this role, if you have any familiarity with the "inspirational material" sighted above,- this is the Riker, the Tigh,-- the captain's hand amongst the crew. It's a good role for a player, and on a mission like this offers a lot of flexibility since this isn't really a "military" operation but still certain things are important. Very close relationship with the captain, lots of responsibility, etc.
Security Officer: This is probably a member of the Legions,-- a military-esque Psi Order associated with the UN,- or other combative sort. Probably with some experience with "VARG's" (think Mecha), with ship-to-ship combat, and so forth. They'd probably, effectively, be in control of the ship/mission during combative encounters because that's not really something that the the Captain has much experience with.
Ship's Pilot: ...this is going to be a Clear, a Clairsentient, and they are a combination of Navigator and actual Pilot. They may or may not ACTUALLY know how to pilot a ship, but a Leviathan Jump Ship needs someone to interface with the ships Jump Drive (a "Tesser") and help direct it to... well, "places to jump to." Oh, and Leviathan Tesser's? They're basically human-created alien beings and the Odyssey's Tesser will be a NPC that you'll know better than anyone else except maybe the next two person on this list.
Qin Liasson: The Qin are Aliens. They are, specifically, the Aliens that Humanity met first before they met any others. They're... slugs.. but, they tend to ride around in organic bioware suits that look very much humanoid and which allow them to blend in with us weird but awesome humans. Qin are weird, and awesome, and very very alien. They have their own culture and what not. A roleplaying challenge!

There are other roles, too, but these are the ones that-- if nobody plays them,- I pretty much have to put one in there anyway just because they're somewhat important. Someone on the ship needs to be able to handle combat-type stuff, if it happens, someone needs to be able to make the ship go from point A to point B, and so on. Other things, like, "Fighter Jock", "Ship's Engineer", "Cool Scientist", and so on, ad infinitum, are all important and many of them might end up being NPC's and what not... but, it's entirely possible for me to imagine a game in which we never actually see the Engineer. Heh.

A (very rough) Overview of the Setting: Aeon, in general, is set in 2123 AD and is a very "Hopeful" setting with some cool elements. It takes place nearly a hundred years after the end of the "Aberrant War", when a bunch of superhumans emerged-- were really awesome for a while- but eventually all went insane and caused a LOT of damage while also irrevocably changing the setting. They were all forced to leave the planet, by threat of China nuking quite literally everything, and they pretty much did so. There isn't really a "one world government," but the UN sorta serves that role, while also not really.

There's also an important historic group called the "Aeon Trinity"-- which started as an gentleman's club and adventuring organization in the 20s and has always been involved in the settings' weird history, and which currently exists as kind of its own independent thing that sorta handles a lot of stuff and works to make the world a better place,-

After the end of the Aberrant War, the world was in pretty bad shape but slowly recovered, becoming... honestly.. a pretty nice place.

Except the USA, which is now the FSA (federated states of america), and is totally a fascist government. Which we all know could never happen but this is sci-fi.

RECENT HISTORY WISE, things called the "Psi Orders" have arisen, which have a method of taking gifted human beings and giving them psionic powers. Which freaked some people out, at first, because ABERRANTS! But, it's okay, Psions are different and benign and they don't go insane and turn into monsters. So, yeah. Most people in the setting do not know that the Psi Order's have their origins through Alien Plots. Crew of the Odyssey, however, are very likely to know this-- or learn it, before very long,-

Anyway, it ended up becoming a good thing that the Psions came around because the Aberrants? They're back. n', they wanna cause trouble. The Psions actually emerged during an Aberrant attack on Sydney, at a space port, where "the Legions" showed up and kicked some major monster ass. After which other groups showed up, in various capacities, from the EK's of Orgotek over in America and their mastery of BIOTECHNOLOGY... to, the Vitakinetics of the Aesculpian Order, who use psionic powers to heal people and are basically a massive charitable organization like the Red Cross. There's a weird somewhat hippie school on the Moon, run by Clairsentients, called ISRA, and the Chinese Government has a Ministry of Telepaths. Lastly, the NORCA, are shapeshifters and masters of biokinesis in South America. They're almost more like a not-really-criminal organization run by one dude in particular.

Oh, the United African Nations had a cool group of Teleporters-- the UPEO,- who helped humanity get back into the stars. (Some of humanity had ALREADY gone into the stars, with the Aberrants, back in the time before but then the Aberrants left. There were some STL exploration things going on too, but.. Upeo can just go places... with some help.) So, humanity just WENT PLACES. Including, like, to the Qin Homeworld where they met the Qin. Like, REALLY quickly and easily, almost like someone told them where the Qin were. Weird.

There were the Chitra Banu, as well, who were scientists.

But, they BETRAYED HUMANITY, and the other Psi Orders destroyed them for their EVIL WAYS, and this had nothing to do with aliens.

Oh, and the Aberrants tossed a giant space station at Europe at one point? The UPEO probably should have stopped that, but, there was some inter-order shit going on (probably exerpated by the fact that a bunch of aliens, totally not being aided by bodiless aliens that are also in contact with earth, kidnapped a bunch of teleporters) and the Teleporters disappeared for a good long time and have only come back relatively recently. Apparently, you know, the Psi Orders are not... like.. ENTIRELY great all of the time? In fact, there was another major scandal recently. In general, though, most everyone agrees that Psions and the Orders are the good guys. Just, you know, HUMAN.

But, yeah.

Europe still had a giant space station thrown at it. It hit France. It was not pretty.

<.<

n' the UPEO, who made Space Travel possible, disappeared for YEARS and Humanity was-- ONCE AGAIN,- cut off from the stars. Which is when, with some help from stranded Qin, they learned how to make LEVIATHAN JUMP SHIPS, which ensure that humanity can go to the stars on its own now. (Well, kinda. You still need Clears.)

And, you know,--
--bodiless entities from space are totally not a thing.

Except for the Odyssey. Who need to find out what the Doyen are, what they want, and maybe find Allies and Weapons to use against them. While hopefully, you not, NOT DYING or Dooming Humanity.

There are OTHER aliens, tho. Humanity just got done fighting a war against some of them, the Chromatics, who kidnapped the teleporters. This was a gigantic thing, a huge effort supported by the newly returned UPEO and the Leviathan Jump Ships and all sorts of stuff. Also, some friendly Aberrants KINDA SORTA helped? This, incidentally, is part of what got the Upeo in trouble with the other orders. They'd discovered a planet filled with sane friendly Aberrants who were like, "Hey, we love humanity, can he help you guys?" n' they tried to tell the other Orders who were less than thrilled that the Teleporters-- who were VERY IMPORTANT,- had been working with PURE EVIL.

...also, there is this massive WORLD ARK type alien thing which humanity made contact with, as well. This is the COALITION ARK, filled with the alien philes, and neither first nor second contact with them went well. Also, they're heading toward Earth now, apparently. Oh and they do very very nasty things to planets and are just generally bad news. Of the, "maybe we shouldn't spread too much information about this around, so you know, not a whole lot of people KNOW about this"... but, people on the Odyssey probably do, and you know, looking for information about the Coalition? Also important.

XD

Basically, anyway, this is a very deep and complicated setting with a lot of depth that I've only provided the barest look at above.

BUT: A lot of that is not hugely important except as background. The game is going to focus on the Odyssey, it's crew, and the people/places/mysteries/aliens they encounter on the way. XD

As a final disclaimer, I will note that while I have long looooong experience running games (...since I was 14 or so, and I'm nearly 43),... and am not a "forum game" virgin, having had two prior attempts,.. I have never run a group game on Elliquiy and honestly am not far off from being a forum game virgin. I can't even RECALL how long ago it was since I last tried to run a forum game. Could easily be over 20 years.

You have my interest so far. I always prefer freeform over system. If more people vote for a system, then disregard my vote. It has also been a while since any systemless scifi has popped up. I do like story RP over smut just because I take great appreciation in the building of stories, relationships, and character development, so I find your story pitch very attractive so far.  :-)

When I get home, I will see if I can offer any questions or further thoughts.

I would be interested. Having never done table top I would lean towards  a sheetless version.

I'm interested. :) Might be cool to play a medical officer character - but it would be if things went towards a freeform setting. :D

I have some interest in perhaps playing an Edenite nova science officer.

I'm home. I read your OP, and also a wikia to help further educate me about this universe. Currently, I don't have any questions. You've presented enough information for me to get the general idea. I am pretty open to filling whatever role is left when the time comes or filling any roles that other players might need for their characters' stories. I'm pretty flexible, and I can't wait to see what interesting characters people come up with.  :-)

oh!  Me me!  Pick me!  *smiles*

I've never been able to play Aeon Trinity, but I've read the entire core book and some of the stuff that came out with it.

I'd very much prefer to use the system.

A VARG pilot of Bio Fighter pilot could be fun.  Electrokinetic or one of the Legions.  :)

  NORCA is fun too..

It's a very long time since I got to play any Trinity!

Would you be specifically using the Trinity Continuum: Aeon setting, powers, etc - or would we be able to tap original-edition materials for things like specific options for powers within Psionic Modes?  I wouldn't want to refer to something like a Norca assimilating biotech into their body if that's not an option in this version of the game.

Either way: definitely keen to see more.  ;D

My inclination might be towards a Norca diplomat: someone intended to be able to travel to new places, meet strange people, and survive not only their home environments but also any attempts they might make to kill her. ;)

For a formal role aboard the ship and in its crew, I'd be flexible.  If the character were the sole Norca on the expedition, being the (or a) designated survival / exploration expert might make sense; if there're several, then branching out in other ways could be wise.

System-wise, I'd like to give 'proper' Trinity / Aeon another try some time... but it might be rather hard to streamline it enough for forum play.

The AEsclupean order are really neat.

It sounds like Crowned might be talking about the new game.  I don't know how that might be different.  In the original, each type of Psion had three different themes to their powers that they could potentially learn.  The AEsclupeans (Vitakinetics) could learn to heal the body, they could learn to heal the mind, and they could learn to harm, the body.

I'm trying to remember the others.  The legions are Pschokineitcs.  They can learn pyrokinesis, cryokinesis, and telekensis.

Orgtek are the electrokinetics.  I don't remember them perfectly.  One "tree" used normal electricity and one "tree" used bioelectricity.  I don't remember the third.  They were also the main innovators in biotechnology--which were living machines that drew upon the same subquantum principles that make psychic powers possible

I don't remember how the seer powers worked.

Vitakinetics had one power tree for shapechanging and one for enhancing their body.  They had the ability to merge with biotechnology to hide it and use it more effectively.

The Ministry (telepaths)...  I can't remember how they were divided.  Empathy, mind reading, and mental influence ?

It's looking like there is enough interest, at at least at the moment, that this is probably going to happen! So, with that note, a few points--

(first)
Honestly, at this point, I wanna go ahead and say--

I think I wanna run this systemless freeform, but in the setting of Aeon, rather than specifically using the rules.

Especially since we have some edition-clashes and what not. But also just because, well, it's kind of a complicated game and I don't wanna bother with all of that when I'm already biting off quite a lot. I'll come up with an abbreviated format "character sheet", anyway, of the sort that I've seen in other group games! Where people can note down their character's strengths and weaknesses, and give some thought to whatever kind of "power set" that they might have, etc. Not COMPLETELY freeform just not a full out thing. Some of you noted a preference for system, specifically, so it's possible that I might lose some of you at this junction. That's okay though I am sorry to see you go! If not, well, we'll see about getting this going.

(second)
Answering some of the questions that popped up.

It sounds like Crowned might be talking about the new game.  I don't know how that might be different: (Muse)
Since we're not using the system, it's mostly not important. There are a few notable and interesting changes to the setting, and of course my specific version of Aeon is probably going to differ in ways from the "official" setting just because that tends to be how I do things. That said there are a few important larger changes that are notable if you played 'old' Trinity.

  • The Legion, as probably the biggest change, is basically the armed forces for the United Nations rather than... well, mercenaries.. That's probably the biggest change as far as the Order's go, as individuals,-- and it really changes the way that the Legion works in a lot of subtle and less-subtle ways, but despite that the group IS still mostly the same.
  • --though the second 'biggest' setting changes is, psions are a lot more mobile and it's a lot more common to have 'arrangements' with other orders. I.e., Telepaths in the Legion, Vitakinetics in Orgotek, and so on. This could happen in the original Trinity but is a lot more normalized and talked about in this edition.
  • ...and, well, obviously the Chitra Banu are still around and are completely playable.. XD
  • Aberrants can't really get "Psi-Like Powers" though they can sometimes fake them. I.e., you won't find a nova with Telepathy, or Clairsentience, or anything like that. Psi powers and Quantum Powers don't mix, generally, except in very rare circumstances. Such as Quantakinesis. (Which way different from Nova powers anyway...)

That isn't in any fashion an exhaustive list of the 'official' setting changes, and for the record, I don't think most of it is HUGELY important? I'm very very used to playing games for people that are not familiar with the property that I'm running, I'm not the sort to want people to feel like they're required to 'do homework', etc. Honestly, my "Ad" for this game is way more detail than I would normally put into this sort of thing because I have a high opinion of Elliquiy players and figure that most of you would be fine with a good amount of detail. But, I'm not going to sweat the small stuff.

If the character were the sole Norca on the expedition... (Outcast)
I've put a hard number of, basically, no more than three members of the Chitra Banu for the expedition mostly because--
--the Chitra Banu are kinda hunted across human space and have a very very bad reputation.

They also have extremely limited numbers, both due to being a rare latency and due to the fact that their Prometheus Tank was "destroyed" after the purge and then put back together with the help of the Pai de Norca. Good ole Proxy Del Fuego. Who hates to throw away any potential useful tool of humanities. ♥ So, you know, there are like 50 members in the Order at the moment. Including their Proxy. Having three of them on the Odyssey would mean that 6% of the Order are tucked away in this one spaceship that is likely to end up in dangerous situations and might end up... lost with all hands.. When you consider that the Captain is, in point of fact, one of the strongest members of the Order...? Yeah.

THAT SAID, for all of the other Orders?

I assume that the total compliment of the Odyssey is ~400 or so.

Not all of these are Psions, of course. There's a sizable contingent of Marines, for instance, who basically represent the expeditions 'heavy hand'. Probably some "MP" type sorts. A full and varied scientific department, with multiple different fields. The Qin have a small delegation, including their Liason, but also some bodyguards and assorted others. (But, probably no more than 5 of the slugs total.) But, a good number of these are going to be just baseline humanity. That said, there are a lot of psions on the crew, and a handful of other "special" folks of various origins.

In general, though, it can be assumed that all of the Orders other than the Chitra have a moderately-sized contingent on the Odyssey. Many of these are going to be members of the Aeon Trinity, who are no longer directly associated with their Order, though they might be indirectly associated thereby. (ISRA, in particular, has a kind of "whatever you do, you're still a member of the School, because the School is life). That said, there are also some active Order members that are likely aboard. These are less likely to be Officers, but are probably still 'notable'.

To finally answer your 'question',-- you are almost certainly not the only biokinetic. :D If you wanna be, however, you might very well be the only member of Norca. Probably put on the mission by Del Fuego himself.

I need to read up on the lore and what not but the oncept of vitakinesis sounds very cool! (Peripherie)
It's really cool, actually, yeah. XD

As Muse noted, all of the psi aptitudes have three "facets" or "modes"--
--Vitakinesis divides into Iatrosis (letting restore a target's lost facilities, physical or mental), Augendus (letting you strengthen or augment someone), Algesis (...you can hurt people...).
There are also "basic powers", which are possessed by anyone with an Aptitude and can be learned by members of other aptitude. Vitakinetics can sense the "condition" people are in and heal their own bodies faster.

(This is a little different from what Muse shared; changes from first to second edition basically.)

I'll provide a very brief non-system based overview of the various psionic aptitudes shortly, on a world-building page that I'm gonna start for the game, but I figured I'd go ahead and do this. XD

Since we ARE doing non-system, anyway, we'll be more flexible with regard to psionic abilities rather than having a tier-based list of exactly what specific powers everyone has. XD

(third)
...we seem to have a good number of players, but for the record, I'm not against having more if people see this and wanna join in.. XD

But, I think we have enough for me to "get started".

Which basically means...
A) Here is a link to our OOC thread, over in Light Exotic Small Groups, which I should probably have clarified in the first post is where Voyage belongs. Someone might end up romancing a Qin, or something weirder, so "Exotics". (Seriously, Romance a Qin. Qin are awesome slugs.)
B) ...more discussion of concepts/etc., for those that are definitely wanting to play and want to do so, can happen over in the OOC thread probably?
C) Would people find a Discord helpful for ooc chatter/planning/whatever? The last group game I was in had a discord and I'd be happy to make one if people want it. Probably talk about this on the OOC thread, I guess, honestly. No reason to clutter this page up.
D) I'mma be making a "World Building" thread for the game. This will be an [OPEN] thread, for the record, and while I'll include some basic setting information in it... it's primarily to put information about stuff you guys discover during the game, etc,.. To use a star trek example, this'd be a thread for me to put some basic information on those weird Borg guys that you met, and for players to pose their own borg-related thoughts and notes as they continue to do borg-related things in the game.

Anywho.

:-)
