Yes I just found that, my apologies. Last question then, my character is going to be interested in Wand Lore so far I'm thinking Herbology, Care of Magical Creatures and possibly Charms. Any other subjects I may need?

All good. I didn't want to be rude and I am going to be adjusting the thread so it's a bit easier to find info with less walls of text but it is in there.

I assume this student will be at least 3rd year to have elective subjects?

I would suggest history of magic. I think an interest in wand lore is going to require an appreciation for the past and studying of older wand makers.

azzmeister89

Excellent. 3rd year it is and I have four subjects. I'll be working on my character sheet over the weekend then

Perfect, sounds good.

Are you still using Cavill? If so while he looks good for his age he's a 38yr old man and doesn't really look 21 anymore. Using older pics of him would be fine though as he's had a semi-long career and could have passed for 21 a lot better when he was closed to 30 than 40.

I don't plan to be too militant about it but I often find it jarring when games have 20yr olds who look 40 and 40yr olds who look 20.

Lol, it does seem to happen quite a bit, to be fair. xD

I did have one question, Totoro. Is it going to be a traditional approach to technology at Hogwarts? Like, no muggle operated technology works on Hogwarts grounds? Or are you going to allow some "magical" devices to be used at Hogwarts? And if I missed that in the information portion, my apologies!

If anything I think he's arguably better looking now. Some people age well. I liked him with a beard in that thing with a name I always forget. Recent, though.

I will say that I find it usually happens where older male FC's are used for younger men and younger female FC's are used for older women. This is probably a bit telling but I won't rant.

That is one area not yet covered! I think still the same applies. It all breaks like it used to. I can't see a reason why that whole thing of muggle tech breaking in magical places would be reduced. I have debated a system to allow for social media though. May pass that off as a magic-powered version, though. Was there anything in particular you had in mind?

This young enough?

No idea how old he is here but he does look pretty young in the shot, for sure.

Ugh, I need some advice on houses.

So I got one dude that's a Korean rock star and another that is a rising German androgynous male model... but I don't want to put them both into Slytherin... I was thinking one could go into Ravenclaw, but I'm not sure which one...

Maybe the model goes into Ravenclaw? Perhaps he likes to defy the stereotype and be a beauty with a brain? Or would the rockstar be more of an intelligent dark horse?

The rockstar is going to be pursuing charms and astronomy. The model has a passion for potions and herbology, thus wishes to pursue a degree in that.

It's so hard to decide which should go where >.<

I think I'd realistically want to hear more about their personalities. Both do sound like they hit the ambition of Slytherin, certainly, but people are highly complex in reality I don't have a clue where I would be sorted because I have traits of all the houses, really.

Ravenclaw for me in just a few words when writing setting info was: Witty, Studious, Wise.

I don't think it is only for the traditionally academically gifted.

I could see a sharp-tongued rockstar easily sliding into Ravenclaw off the back of being witty and, perhaps, having somewhat hidden wisdom beyond their years.

Equally, determination and courage were words that are tied to Gryffindor. I could see the bravery to openly and proudly stand as a more androgynous model as being traits that could fit into that house.

Really most people can fit all sorts of places if you look at the right aspects of them.

Speaking as a GM, though, honestly I'm almost never going to say "Your character is in the wrong house" unless it seems wildly off base. What makes sense is pretty individualistic. I bet if everyone here tried putting a bunch of famous characters from other media into houses we would disagree soon enough. I think it has to be more diverse/complex or all the characters in the game just have to be jammed into 4 specific personalities.

I know some versions of HP games have made like a magical controlled intranet that they can use and through that they can access social media. There are all kinds of clever and punny names you can pick for those things. If you want to use anything I've created in the past for social media, I'm totally okay with it.

For example: This thread!

You already let me steal that social media coding for another game like 3 years ago, I had to mess around with it a lot to make it work for other settings but I guess now I've come full circle back to Harry Potter.

After the headache-inducing experience of writing up the wand lore segment of setting info alongside all the classes, locations, houses, quidditch stuff and all that other stuff a little time saved is appreciated.

Edit: In case anyone has not seen, in the segment mentioning allowing unusual wizards/witches I have also added 1/8th-1/4th half-breeds to the list of allowable characters however they also count to that 'You get one unusual one' limit and their differences are purely cosmetic. Also if I end up with two of any one unusual type I will cap that type for a time.

LMAO. "Go sit with the other assholes"

That broke me.

Anyway, for my Korean guy Ye-Jun, I found a school created by Korean fans and have included the info here in spoiler for the GM to look over, otherwise perhaps majority of Asia attends Mahoutokoro in Japan for their high school years.

Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide
Garam Hwihak is a magic school in Korea that was run secretly from other countries, but now other countries are taking notice.

Founded in the 1500's

Hong Gil-dong, written by Gyun Heo, describes Hong Gil-dong, the first principal of Garam Hwihak. In fact, Korean wizards have existed before that, but the first school was established.

It is 1500 years old. Hong Gil-dong was exceptionally talented among the wizards of that time, and surprisingly, he honed his magic and reached that level. he specializes in magic

Deeply realizing the need for a school where they can learn, they build a small school in Uldo-guk. After that, just before he passed away, he moved the site and built a new school in Mt. Jiris.

it's there somewhere

After the 2000s, children with the qualities of a wizard living in Seoul or downtown are notified by email, letter, or phone that they can enter the school or by visiting them in person. and

Cranes bring letters to children living in the countryside or mountains.

How to get there is very simple. If you take the issued exclusive transportation card on subways across the country and pass it, the scenery changes little by little in an instant, opening the way to the subway to Garam Hwihak.

Mt. Jirisan, where Garam Hwihak is located, cannot be teleported in most places. It wasn't that someone had a device, but most of the wizards, except for some wizards who excelled in teleportation,

Strangely, it was impossible to teleport. Therefore, it is said that the wizards who can teleport in Mt. Jirisan have great talent in magic. All previous principals were able to teleport here. The only place in the school where anyone can teleport is the principal's office.

The exterior of the school is similar to that of Gyeongbokgung, but the number of floors is staggering. The number of buildings including dormitories is five. Each dormitory has a building, and they are all designed so that you can go without going out. There is one large building excluding the dormitory, with a total of 7 floors.

The school uniform is a daily life hanbok, and most professors and some students who adhere to the traditional method use a mape or hairpin, and others use a stick. There are four special materials: Zhujak's feather, white tiger's tail hair, Blue Dragon's Yeouiju piece, and Hyunmu's tears. Among these wands, the wand/horse hairpin/hairpin (one of the three) using a piece of the blue dragon’s female costume is not known who is currently using it or where it is. Strangely enough, a cane / horse pole / hairpin made of wood was found in the freshman who was assigned to the dormitory on the day of the entrance ceremony in 2000. The moment I touched the dormitory assignment beads to receive assignments that day, the beads split, and the feathers of Suzaku were engulfed in blue flames. It was so hot that no one could touch it, but it is said that the flame went out the moment the little wizard touched it. The wizard, who is now 31 years old, would be the Minister of Magic in Korea... but in foreign terms, he belongs to Korea's most elite magic unit, Hwarang, which is Auror. Rumor has it that there is no employee who uses attack magic better than this young man.. Lastly, the hairpin made from Hyun Moo's tears is owned by a female student born in 2000 who inherits the blood of Mrs. Park's wife. It is said that the hairpin was actually used by Mrs. Park's wife, and the people around them say that the owner, Ms. Park, has an extraordinary talent for petronus magic. Rumor has it that it can summon a Basalt-shaped Petronus, and can grow up to 50 meters in size.

There are four dormitories. There is a blue dragon, a red dragon, a white tiger, and a black hyunmu. As for the allocation method, when you put your hand on the huge crystal ball, the color changes instantly, and up to four colors appear. If two or more colors appear, you can choose by yourself. There is Baekho's dormitory on the first floor, Zhujak and Cheongryong's dormitory on the 7th floor, the highest floor, and finally, Hyunmoo's dormitory in the deepest part of the school lake. There is a rumor that white and black came out and that he chose Hyunmoo's dormitory.

Each dormitory has intensively taught magic, which are lightning, flame, ore, and water-based magic in that order. Students of Blue Dragon and Hyeonmu can communicate with creatures that live in water, students assigned to Jujak's dormitory can communicate with birds, and White Tiger with mammals.

Korean wizards are very proficient in silent magic, unlike wizards in other countries. From the first year, most of the students use silent magic strangely. There is no specific way to do silent magic, and it is expected that it has to do with the energy flowing through the bodies of Korean wizards .

Representative wizards and witches from Garam Hwihak include Jeon Woo-chi, Hong Gil-dong, and Mrs. Park, and there are other unknown people. (e.g. independence fighters)

There is a special mount in Garam Hwihak, which other countries usually rides on mysterious magical animals, but here, a self-proclaimed Shinseng of Jirisan, who celebrated his 714th birthday this year, is working as a mentor and professor, and this is the first among all countries to use a cloud mount. I'm training you to do it. If you ride on the clouds, you can see the speed of movement that surpasses that of an airplane with a very soft and comfortable feeling.

Hetae is the rarest of the mysterious magical creatures that only live in Korea, and it is said that this creature boasts extremely strong defense. According to the records, it has a skin that is thicker and harder than that of a dragon, and even kills spells. The wizard who can handle this creature passed away in 2014, 4 years ago, but there are a total of 11 witches. There are rumors that he likes women, but I'm not sure.

There is also a triwizard in Korea, and a total of three countries participate in the war: Korea, China, and Japan. The event was held for the first time after Korea’s liberation, and in 2016, the last match, a cane made of the feathers of the now 31-year-old Jujak described above (they used to be a horsemanship, but now they are said to have been changed to a cane. It is said that this young man ate foreign food. Rumors...) won the championship, and he won the championship with the best performance among all-time winners. In this game, there was a death match when there were only three people left, and although this young man did not have a mysterious magical animal, he retired China's Cui and Japanese silkworm with one shot and made the Japanese wizard and Chinese witch incapacitated. do.

There are subjects taught only in Korean magic schools, two of which are exorcism and cloaking, both of which are slightly different from defense against darkness and transformation. Exorcism is similar, but you learn how to exorcise certain mysterious magical animals and evil spirits, and you learn how to become an animagus, which has the lowest number of students in the art of exorcism. Unusually, Korean wizards and witches can turn into more than 10 kinds of animals according to records, but among the surviving wizards and witches, there are up to four types that set the most records. Ms. Park, a descendant of Mrs. Park mentioned above, is said to be able to transform into a different kind of animal at a young age. Ms. Park's dream is sad, but she is a teacher of cloaking techniques from a foreign country. The reason is that he has never been to a foreign country before.

I honestly don't think the vast majority of this lore needs to be included to create a character with a Korean backstory. I don't want to add in whole new kinds of magic/creature etc. when we already have quite a lot of things to keep track of and if I start letting characters from other nations establish that entire nation's system (Even if it's not yours in this case but fan material) then the setting is going to end up with more and more lore.

I think it's best to just keep it vague. Realistically the 1-2 paragraphs detailing their early life shouldn't require much intertwining with deeper lore of their home nation.

I'm also generally not a big fan of that lore for a few reasons, various bits don't seem fitting but I don't really have the time to start chopping and changing it when things can just be left vaguer and it should be fine.

Noted!

Edit: Just want to draw people's attention to two slightly later additional rules:

9. Try not to form cliques. Do not just write with characters with romantic ties to your own. Do not exclude people. Try to find scenes with writers in the game you may not have yet written with. This being said, not everyone's style's mesh and if someone politely suggests you don't fit well, leave them be.
10. Student/teacher relationships are barred. They would get caught and the teacher would be fired. If you want your teacher fired in disgrace you can discuss this with me but it is an inevitability. Similarly, incestuous content is barred. It's not the place for it.

I just don't think this is the game for inappropriate relationships or incest etc., it's really not the focus and may well put people off of joining. No judgement to those who do write that content it's just, they would get caught pretty fast in a place like Hogwarts.

Please read the info below as it may seriously help save you some time/energy when creating a CS as these are issues that have all come up with at least 2-3 people so far (I'm not singling any one person out it seems to be a general issue):

"Wizards are typically educated from 11-18 in school before attending wizarding university. These cover school years 1-7. In fifth year students take their O.W.L exams, typically around age 16, and in seventh year they take their N.E.W.T exams at around age 18. Formerly they would have taken elective subjects by this point but due to wizarding university being free and mandatory students now wait until university to take elective subjects and focus on their preferred areas. Late Bloomers typically take their O.W.L's after 3 months of remedial wizardry 101 and their N.E.W.T's after a further 3 months of remedial wizardry 102.

In University students take their O.G.R.E to establish their aptitudes and to select their electives for their final three years. Most students take on around 3-4 topics while some focus on as few as two and some diversify up to as many as six. After this in their fifth year university students take their D.R.A.G.O.N exams."

Students do not begin elective studies until 3rd year university. This is so that all teaching classes will always have some students. It is a practicality for the sake of the game. I know it changes how NEWT's work and makes them seem easier. Just don't over-think it too much. Please make sure your character did all subjects up until 3rd year university. The only except would be if they got a T in their OWL and NEWT they might have been allowed to drop it for their OGRE.

Also on the note of exam results:

Too many students who have been sent in have literally no failing grades. I'm going to have to start insisting that all student PC's have at least one P or lower. I don't think anyone has sent in a PC that has a D or a T in any topic and while T's are rare even some very intelligent characters got regular D's in their blindspot topics.

On the topic of U17 Education:

Hogwarts is not open to Under 18's! I don't want under 18 characters running around. It is, again, a concession to making the game more practical on E. Under 18's could have got their wizarding education at one of the two as-yet unnamed schools in the UK, or Beauxbatons or Durmstrang or Ilvermony etc.

If people want I can/will flesh out those two other smaller schools in the UK.
