Our Colorful Neighborhood

Indigo Place is a haven for spirit and diversity and queer. It is a community of brothers and sisters, of mamas and daddies, of queens and butches and non-binaries. For many, it is home. Located on the north side in Chicago's Lakeview, it was officially recognized as an LGBTQ village in the late nineties. Shops and restaurants keep it bustling in the day. Clubs and bars keep it thumping into the early hours of morning. Apartments are great for sleep and other things.

December 2023 has begun. Many are gearing up for the holidays and donning their gay apparel. Come! The residents of Indigo Place invite you to cozy up for story time. Sex, scandal, drama, merriment, and more await.

(OOC Note: Yes, this is a fictionalized Boystown/Northalsted. The setting is ours to create and develop to our desires.)

This brick, low-rise complex is nestled in the heart of the neighborhood. It has four floors of rentals ranging from studios to three bedrooms, and it also includes laundry facilities in the basement. It's cheaper than most options in the area.


Lakeview Flats



A luxury high-rise. Community amenities include an outdoor pool and hot tub, fitness center, sundeck, garage parking, and concierge. All apartments have a washer and dryer, and some have balconies. Units range from studios to three bedrooms. It sits close to the northern tip of Indigo Place.

The Guidelines

• The GM is Lyron.
• This is a sandbox where the stories will rest squarely within the players' hands. There will be events, GM created or player suggested, to bring characters together.
• The neighborhood can be shaped by the players. For the sake of interactions, though, only one of each business type can be defined--e.g., one spa, one book store, etc. The exceptions are bars, clubs, and maybe restaurants; more of those may be added upon player request and at GM discretion, particularly if they serve a niche not yet covered. Before the roleplay has begun, those that have been established could be replaced, too, at least as long as a character has not yet connected with it as an owner or employee.
• The group is seeking players who enjoy story and fleshing out characters. Smut is cool and players can go wild within the realm of realism, but smut is not meant to be the sole focus. People are more than sex bags, and character concepts should reflect this.
• Relaxed pace. Please try to post at least once within a two-week period, particularly for group scenes. Exceptions are granted as the need arises, because, hey, real life happens, but please communicate. All players who join are expected to be patient with slower posters.
• The game is straight friendly.
• Cross gender writing is fine.
• Some gritty plots and concepts are welcome. However, such ideas need to be reasonable in tone and in scope, and they should be easily avoidable by players who prefer lighter stories, because their boundaries need to be respected. So, no serial killers or unhinged psychopaths, no gang warfare in the middle of the streets, nothing that would be better suited for the Extreme board, just to name a couple of examples. If you aren't sure about an idea, please feel free to ask!
• The sandbox will be placed in the Non-Con section for greater content freedom. Keep in mind that players' offs must be respected.
• A post header will be provided in every IC thread. When a post contains sexual or upsetting content, include a warning.
• No god-moding or meta-gaming without the other player's consent.
• If a player drops out, or indirectly makes it clear that they no longer want to be a part of the group, the GM does reserve the right to do anything to the player's character that is deemed necessary. This includes killing them off. This also includes allowing someone to adopt or NPC the character for the sake of continuity. By joining, players give permission for this to happen, however unlikely it might arise. If it does, the original player will be credited, and the original sheet will of course be maintained so that it is still accessible to them.
• No OOC drama. You aren't required to like or interact with everyone, but you must act respectfully. If you are found to be stirring drama or otherwise behaving in a way that is considered toxic to the group as a whole, you may be asked to leave, if not also reported to site staff when applicable.
• Please keep political, overly negative, or overly sexual/flirtatious subject matter out of the OOC. Elliquiy has better places for those.

The Sheet

All player characters should be at least eighteen. Younger NPCs are okay, but please keep E's rules in mind, including those pertaining to images.

A player can have as many characters as they desire. To have a sheet reviewed, you can post it here in this thread or PM it to the GM, whichever is preferred.

Character sheets have a section for desired plots. It could be worthwhile to peruse them for brainstorming!

Personality: Dustin faces the world with cordiality and a commitment to protect and serve, approaching his duty as a cop with a small town mindset in the big city. Normally, he's patient and level-headed, often able to seek a reasonable response to most conflict without emotions clouding his judgment, but he's not perfect; some days, the stress can get to him, and sometimes, a person or issue gets under his skin to the point of a mild obsessiveness, bugging and festering and clouding his judgment until a resolution can happen.

In his personal sphere, he prides himself on reliability. If he's not tied up at work and he can help, or be a shoulder to lean on, he'll make the time, and when he gives his word, he does his best to follow through. However, he's solution-oriented and a bit of a domineering personality, so he tends to meddle despite the person's desires, and despite any initial attempts of him trying not to interfere.

Lastly, an easygoing demeanor belies a favor for structure and orderliness. Everything has a reason and a place. It's maybe in part why he's been content as a patrol officer for so long.

Bio:

• Dustin was born in Indiana. His father was a highway patrol officer and his mother was a courtroom deputy clerk. They were kind faces within their communities. It extended to their household, to their two boys, too, in the form of being supportive and loving, but they exercised a no-nonsense, no-excuses policy and pushed their kids to do well, including in the moral sense. They were confines Dustin learned to stay within and did well at, or at least, that was the case for most of his life as a minor.
• He grew up in boys' scouts and baseball during most of his schooling. He performed well academically, earning the straight As needed to please his parents. While not the most popular, he was generally liked by those who could at least tolerate his strait-laced attitude.
• His relationship with his brother started out in the same way most brothers did: fights and shenanigans, but they were close for several years, up until his brother entered high school. His brother became the cool Levitt, the one who liked to party and be crazy in the spirit of enjoying life and leaving no stone unturned. Though he didn't admit it, Dustin was kind of envious.
• Early in his teens, Dustin recognized his attraction for men but kept it locked away. He participated in the general homophobia that plagued adolescent boys, though he tried to avoid dating women, claiming that he wanted to focus on other aspects of life, at least until he started to fear the suspicions.
• Between his envy and paranoia, the goody two-shoes snuck out junior year with his brother to a party, where he drank and had sex with a girl who he was friends with and who had shown an interest. If accidentally driving his car into a ditch and underage drinking with his equally underage brother wasn't bad enough, well, the news that the girl had gotten pregnant was earth-shattering. The girl decided to keep it. Dustin tried his best to assume responsibility and make a relationship work. It did, for a while. They married the summer after their graduation.
• His plan was to follow, more or less, in his dad's footsteps and become a police officer. He stuck to his education while child-rearing and working part time. At twenty-one, he entered the police academy and took a position at the local department.
• Dustin was twenty-four when his brother died while driving drunk.
• When he was twenty-six, he met a man who made advances on him. The affair lasted for about half a year until his wife grew suspicious and checked his phone. When his parents heard her side of the story, they were devastated. He tried to make it out like he was misled and that it wouldn't happen again. It appeased them well enough, but the damage had been done with his wife, and his parents were still disappointed when the divorce settled. He was twenty-seven at the time.
  
  Those were long months. The other man got the worst of it. Dustin at least had more pull within the community. When he claimed the other man was the aggressor, he took some of the heat off himself at possibly the cost of making the other man's life harder, something he regrets to this day. It got bad enough that the other man feared for his life and fled. Dustin still got the bad looks and wasn't treated the same. He made plans to leave after the divorce and followed through the day after.
• Living and working in a big city like Chicago took adjustments, but Dustin came to appreciate the relative anonymity and the more liberal attitudes. However, despite patrolling Indigo Place, it took about three years for him to grow comfortable enough to act on his sexuality. The occasional one-night stand allowed him to dip his toes until he was more comfortable pursuing what he wanted: a relationship. He eventually found that in a man whom he dated for about three years. The breakup crushed him. That was a little over a year ago.
• At thirty-one, he snagged a two-bedroom apartment at Parker Commons.
• When he had moved to Chicago, he visited his parents every year for Christmas, and other times when he was needed, perhaps more out of a sense of obligation, because, although they acted fine, he didn't feel the same around them anymore. At thirty-five, his then-boyfriend encouraged him to come out. He did so, and it didn't go over well. His dad proclaimed that he lost his only other son. It ended the visits, but he still sends birthday and holiday cards.
• About six years ago, he met Jay when the boy started working at Willie's. They grew close enough that, when Jay one night expressed that he had been kicked out of his foster home, Dustin offered him a place to stay, something that turned out to be permanent, except for Jay's two-year prison sentence. It was a disappointment, but Dustin visited the boy every week for those two years, and he kept his bedroom the same.
• With Jay back and the breakup stinging less, he hopes to find love again and maybe fill any absences in his social life.

Desired Plots: Open to virtually anything, but...

• Any interactions involving his being a police officer, whether benign or criminal, whether he's in the right or the wrong.
• Open to crossing paths with the man he had affair with in his mid twenties, and exploring the drama that stems from that. The man's occupation and age are pretty flexible.
• He has a kid that would be twenty-one. They've been estranged since the kid was ten, when Dustin would have left their hometown. It could be interesting if the kid became a fixture in his life, especially since he's living with a boy who he's acted more familial with. The gender identity of the kid is open.
• Someone interested in playing the ex?  It could have been an intense romance that fizzled out. Dustin could have proposed and that went over poorly, causing the breakup.  The ex could have had an affair. What drama and conflict stems from their dynamic is pretty open based on interest.
• Down for a romance, from a slow-burn to something passionate. Hookups might be okay in the meantime.
• Providing support to other plots, whether positive or negative.

Ons: Dustin normally acts as a gentle dom or a service top. He can enjoy light bondage and kinks, and he might be willing to explore sadomasochism to a limited degree. He could bottom but probably wouldn't be interested in staying in that role without some versatility. Likes a man with a well-maintained beard, but it's not a requirement. Personality: Jay is pure spirit, a relentless fire that only burns brighter when the pressure amplifies. It fuels his perseverance and independent attitude just as much as his headstrong inclinations and his competitive perception of the world. In fact, he sometimes feels off without a source of rivalry or some sort of conflict, things that he might be more inclined to milk for all their worth than to de-escalate. Depends on the context and how much he cares about the other person. It takes time for him to warm up to someone, but when he does, he shows a loyalty that can be as strong as steel unless betrayal rears its ugly head. He's pretty reserved when it comes to himself, but he's bluntly outspoken about other things when he feels compelled. Bio:

• An accidental pregnancy the man had no interest in taking care of, Jay was left alone with his mother for the first several years of his life.
• His mom met a man who got her hooked on heroin, and shortly after Jay started the first grade, she overdosed. He was returned to her from foster care one time. It lasted a couple years until, when he was ten, she relapsed and was later found dead after being missing for three days, leaving him stuck in Illinois' foster care system. His last placement was in Chicago, with a married couple who cared more about the check and having someone to do the chores. It worked for him.
• During his teens, Jay spent most of his free time out of the homes, whether hanging out at a boxing gym for at-risk youth or dabbling in free running. Later, he started working part time.
• Grades wise, he did alright in school. His teens, primarily those early years, were peppered with detentions and a couple suspensions. Both his academics and behavior improved with age, primarily driven by his dream job, though on the streets, he could be scrappy and aggressive when he thought he could get away with it.
• At sixteen, he was hired at Willie's where he met and gradually befriended Dustin, one of the cops who was a regular.
• He was tossed out of his foster home upon his eighteenth birthday. When he mentioned it to Dustin the next time he saw the man, he was invited to stay with him. Jay intended it to be a temporary thing until he could secure the funds to go somewhere else, but he never left. Though he won't admit it, the man became like a father figure to him.
• During high school, Jay participated in a firefighter program, and after graduation, he took some classes at one of the colleges alongside working toward his EMT certification.
• Though being a firefighter was his dream job, he also liked the thrill of a fight and participated in his first amateur MMA match at nineteen, falling in love with it. He participated in a couple of other matches.
• Jay had the occasional run-in with the law, mainly for minor infractions like trespassing and staying out past curfew. After a friend was attacked one night, he tracked down the assailant to his home, minutes before a cop arrived. The harm was enough to convict him of aggravated battery. The sentence was two years. His time is finally up and he's become a free man.

Desired Plots: Open to virtually anything, but...

• Trying to figure out what to do with himself post-felony. He doesn't want to work in a restaurant all his life, but he isn't sure what else he wants to do that he could be content with.
• A real good friendship, 'cause he needs someone besides an old man to confide in.

She's definitely a creative and gets distracted easily. It takes something special to hold her attention and arouse her passions - artistic or romantically.

Bio:

• Born and raised in a small town in Louisiana. She is no stranger to hurricanes or Mardi Gras. Over the course of growing up her family lost two houses in two separate hurricanes. She once spent almost a full day trapped under the debris during the second storm.  After the last storm her family moved  to New Orleans in her final couple years of high school. It was in New Orleans where she went to university to study music.
• New Orleans was a freeing experience for Anna. It was there that she felt free to express her sexuality and got her first girlfriend. The people there were much more open minded than back in her hometown. She didn't even realize who she was or how she felt about it until moving there. It was with a lot of excitement that she went to University the following year. But Uni did not agree with Anna.
• University was a disaster she had to repeat several courses in the summer months just to get her degree.  While she met a lot of interesting people school was just too confining and restrictive for how she wanted to express herself.  So she decided to  move to Chicago.
• Getting to Chicago was a move that took her over two years to make. Bio: Once upon a time in the affluent suburbs of Detroit there was a child who wanted to grow up to be a lovely princess. The child’s conservative father had other ideas, expecting his offspring to be a big strapping man like him. This caused a tremendous amount of strife between the two (as well as the sympathetic mother and finally the youth left home at eighteen and moved to Chicago, leaving that awful old life behind and arriving as someone new… Eva Deverell.

Not that life was suddenly perfect for Eva. Her first few years were spent as an usherette at an old cinema that showed classic movies, the pay wasn’t great but she loved the atmosphere. Eventually she became a camgirl in her free time because becoming glamorous wasn’t cheap. When she was twenty Eva was discovered at her job by an agent. At first she thought it was a line but it was legitimate. It was mostly small-time local stuff but she was a real honest-to-goodness model. Along with her budding career came a few lucrative escorting gigs, strictly high end for our girl. It was during these she developed her champagne tastes and hunger for the wild side.

Over the last three years Eva’s career has improved thanks to her talent and willingness to go the extra mile. Not quite a household name but she does get “Aren’t you that one girl?” on a semi-regular basis. Her very active social life ranges from doing lines of coke in the trendiest bathrooms in Chicago to a night of debauchery as part of the city’s fetish scene. The only problem is Eva just barely makes enough to support her lifestyle and her window may be closing faster than she realizes.

Desired Plots: Possible stories for Eva could involve her party girl life and declining ability to pay for it. There’s also the consequences of her dubious judgement when it comes to relationships and pharmaceutical use. She has avoided any serious legal ramifications of her nightlife and side hustles but that luck can’t last forever. The shadow of her father is something that always looms overhead.

Ons: Eva has a very causal outlook toward sex. Her partners are frequently pretty boys who are fun to play with but are otherwise not the best for her. Bio: Lottie is the sole, spoiled child of Greta Andersen, a famous C-list actress, and retired porn star. Bio: WIP

• CHILD - Grandparents were Taiwanese immigrants experienced in cuisine. Mom and Dad were happy folk running a small family restaurant, although there was some trauma with gang warfare and retaliation. Accusations flew, and patiences were lost, but they managed to keep to themselves. Isaac was a bookworm while attending St Edwards (Roman Catholic) school pre-K to 8th grade. He was clearly a sensitive soul, sheltered, but as soon as he was bullied, he fought back, talked back, and often challenged authority. Encountering dogs, cats, and birds left him with an allergic reaction, and so colored his world-view on soft animal features such as fur, hair, and feather.
• TEENAGER - Mom and Dad fought over some key differences in their beliefs, rocking their marriage, especially when it came down to religious tension and Isaac's coming out. Dad wasn't approving and had half a mind to send Isaac somewhere more strict and disciplining. Instead, Chicago Academy High School was a place Isaac found some more of himself. He joined theater and music, which aggravated his father further until his unexpected death of a heart attack. It was a dark period for Isaac and Mom, and did not really bring them closer.
• COLLEGE - Although Mom nearly stalked Stephanie Izard at her Chicago restaurants for a while... she changed careers from Taiwanese cuisine to real estate. Isaac graduated high school and attended Uni of Chicago for law with creative writing on the side. He found much more of himself and his sexuality there, experimenting with quite a few men. Some disappointing loves, a cocaine kick, and overall, many hard lessons well learned. He delved much more into plays and musicals. He wrote and published his first mystery novel. Bio:  Shani’s parents are Syrian immigrants, technically she is as well, but was only two years old when her family emigrated and does not know life outside of America.  Her family first moved to New York City, then to South Carolina as her Father took a position teaching Physics at the University of south Carolina.  Growing up in the bible belt with Muslim parents was a strange experience, with her Mother being more liberal minded, at least until Shani revealed that she was dating her first girlfriend.  Shani is a combination of her rebellious Mother and nose to the grindstone Father, and still loves them both despite being estranged from them.  Her Mother will still call and text occasionally, her Father does so only once per year at her Mother’s beckoning, but she is not welcome home until she disavows being who she is, which is never going to happen.

An affectionate free spirit who works her ass off at everything she does, Shani was an A student all through High School, while studying dance, which pleased her parents, and kickboxing, which did not please them as much.  She entered a Physical Therapy program at Clemson University, but left as a Physical Therapy Assistant with her associates degree when the break with her parents occurred in her sophomore year of college.  They thought that by refusing to pay for her schooling, Shani would come to her senses and find a boy whom they approved of to date and marry, but should have known that rather than surrender and comply, she would only rebel all the more.
