What's with the red X beside a new play I just started?  have I done something wrong?

As you are the person who started the RP, you have the ability to delete it (however, once your partner responds, you are no longer permitted to do so as per our rules here). That's what the red X is.

In addition you can see what an option would do without clicking it by mousing over it. Such as if you see a lock icon and mouse over it you have the ability to lock the thread if you desire, mousing over says it locks a thread.
