So, Little Oni just started having some browser problems today.  Chrome, and the Avast browser refuse to load any pages (endless spinning), and when she launches Firefox, it claims that Firefox is already running - except that Task Manager doesn't show anything but the 'Close Firefox' dialog box as an active process.

She's able to connect to the Internet with Discord (desktop app) and connect to Minecraft servers, so the Chrome and Avast behavior isn't due to a bad cable or anything on those lines.

Anyone got any ideas?

Had you tried restarting the PC - which I figured you might had. I'm wondering whether you have any extensions on either browser which would interfere and causing the issues. I know I had an issue where Youtube couldn't load videos, and then I realized it is because of an extension I used. That was resolved very quickly though, but you could try starting the browser without the extensions first?

Oniya

She told me that she did a restart, but is there a way to launch it without extensions?  (right-click context menu or somesuch?)  I also found out she did what I'd call a 'soft' restart (from the menu) as opposed to a full shut-down/power-off/power-up restart, which might have left something not-quite-closed, so we're going to do another check in the AM.

I found this. Basically you could to try to get Firefox to troubleshoot and see what's the issue.

Oniya

Going to try this.  The full restart didn't fix it, and she managed to clear her cache before it went into the loop (which still didn't fix it).  Still having the same problem with Chrome and Avast SafeBrowser, but she didn't do a 'hard' restart before trying those.  I sent her the link so she could pull it up on her laptop rather than have me try to explain everything.

With macs, when this issue occurs on all browsers its malware. Malwarebytes works pretty good to find that. Not really sure Avast is all that good. I am a tech as my name suggests :D If you dont have it,  get the installer on one of your other computers, put it on a thumbdrive and bring it over, install. Nothing else but internet related things. Sounds like something might have put a proxy on which is looping you to localhost maybe.

Also restart in safe mode to see if the behavior continues. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-your-pc-in-safe-mode-in-windows-10-92c27cff-db89-8644-1ce4-b3e5e56fe234

While MalwareBytes did find and fix a couple of things, it turned out that the whole thing hinged on a Java update.

That sounds accurate in a twisted way. Get chrome and firefox installed too is my suggestion. IE kinda sucks sometimes.

Oniya

IE is the best browser - to download a decent browser with.  ;D

(And it's finally almost dead.)

LOL Its called the Edge but its still IE :D I'd still get the other two, just in case....

Oniya

Currently, she has Firefox, Chrome, Avast SafeBrowser and one called Pale Moon (for playing with old Flash avatar-creation apps).  She's never really used IE.

Well the good thing is they are phasing out java eventually.
