Nach Mir Kommt Die Flut

Genre: Psychological Drama, Thriller
Pairing: F/M

Role Sought: The Smuggler
Seeking to Play: Dietrich Wolff
Themes: Stasi, Surveillance, Paranoia
Inspiration: Barbara, The Teacher, Cold War, The Shadow Line

Somewhat inspired form the picture above which led to the character I want to play, this is set in Walter Ulbricht era German Democratic Republic/East Germany. The cold war is on as the grand conflict between the two contrasting ideologies continues to unfold on the global political scale with all sorts of proxy conflicts taking in various places.

But the story isn’t about that but rooted much more locally so to speak of. Dietrich Wolff is a former Stasi Officer who has entered the state bureaucracy. She’s not a very nice person and while does everything by the book on the surface, is quite shamelessly corrupt and is known to blackmail people if it’s to her benefit, maintaining a trove of her own giving her a leverage for her own machinations. Hers is a murky past, most of it kept carefully obscured.

Why she’s recently been transferred to Rostock is anyone’s guess but rumors swirl about her. About things she has done for the Secret Police. Others are left on alert if they are to be caught for incompetence or worse of suspected loyalties and to find their entire existence purged after good bit of shame for themselves. In many ways her presence disturbs the composure of the bureaucracy in the city.

Her presence is almost immediately followed by weeding out of some people, enhancing the suspicion many feel but don’t have courage to voice it out. Until she shows up at place of one of them on an evening. Letting them know what they’re doing. Using an Interhotel and occasionally Baltic to smuggle in foreign goods. Now she could either ruin them or they give her a piece of the pie and so begins this new partnership. Yet, over the time his ‘associates’ are busted and this in turn prompts him to depend increasingly on Dietrich while being drawn into the life of this dangerous woman.

I want their relationship to be fraught with tension and an uneven power balance. Dietrich has much higher leverage here but she’s not interested in abusing it entirely and instead more intent on using it to her own advantage. In  sense, it’s not even the material gain which drives her as much as desire to control others.

I imagined her ‘partner in crime’ being a young man, perhaps someone who immersed in counterculture and in his 20’s and being an idealist of sorts while she’s considerably older. But he’s your guy so its entirely up to you.
