Hello! I searched the help forums for this and could not find anything.

I know the size limit for pictures as well as to what is allowed and not allowed fine, I see the size limits for avatar photos and signature photos. However, I was wondering if there was a size limit for photos in actual threads, granted they are appropriate content.

Thank you!

Ariel

There is no rule but do be courteous of other members, assuming you mean in threads where other people are posting. Anything that stretches the page or breaks the page’s coding isn’t considerate towards other people and will also look tacky :P

You can use the [img] tags if you want, to make it easier to resize images in the thread.

It will be for a thread I will be creating, but I will be sure it will not be too large or an eyesore, thank you so much!!

I just use the width= option on the image tags. Members can then click on the pickers to toggle size as desired.

Ariel

Oof, I meant to specify the width part in my post. Oopsie.

A lot depends on what you are trying to do with the picture

If you are trying to set up the environment for a story (especially if there is a lot of detail to be noticed) it makes sense to take advantage of the available space.

The picture below is one I've actually used to start a roleplay.  The picture itself is 500 pixels wide which is a bit small to catch all the detail.

So I've sized up the width to 750 pixels using "width=" (see the code below).

For me using the the forum default width and a browser zoom of 120%  (which is my norm) it will just fit in the available width and shows a lot of detail (for someone using higher zoom, it will make the page scroll the screen to the side, which is annoying, so I usually use 600 just in case).  For people not using the zoom control it won't be as wide, but will still show a lot of detail.

On the other hand, the picture below is 750 wide without adjusting the size but unless the post is all about the picture,  that's way too big.

So if it is for something like a character avatar to go along with a roleplay post, a width of maybe 250 or less would work better, so people could focus better on the words that go with it.

clicking on the resized picture will display the original size in either case.

One thing to remember a bit. If you use the tag to make something bigger it can make the photo blur. Always better to go smaller rather than bigger with it. Also choose height or width. When you do both it can distort :)

Thank you everyone! I appreciate the help from you all!! <3

A thing that is really handy if you use the picture off to the side is to add padding

so..
as an example:

I don't like people, I will flat out admit it. I won't sugar coat it by saying, I prefer to be alone or something. Well I do, because I don't like other people. Not in person, when it is text on my screen that is another matter. I think, I think because online I can be someone else, or rather another part of me. They don't see anything but what I wan't them to see, they don't see skin colour, they don't see gender, they don't see flashy clothes or just plain gym clothes. No, online they see just what I want them to see. And they like me for what I have done, not for the size of my tits or something. Because I hacked the IRS database and stole some money, because I broke through some of the firewalls at the Pentagon and pilfered documents proving how the US tortured people. I spend my days online, on the dark net. When I come across some kiddyporn shit sure I will drop an anonymous note to the authorities but I am not some white knight. I do it for money and for the thrill, mostly the thrill I will admit. After all I live in a small apartment, just me and my computers. I have quite a collection, most are used for parts but I have a few that do some of the automated gruntwork, database searches, bruteforcing passwords and such. And then my main computers I use to work with, yeah it gets hot in summer but nice and warm in winter. So.. bonus I guess.

So you have a little space between pic and text, makes it easier to read.

just add padding=(whatever number you like i prefer 8)

so

When I find that a picture I want to use is too small or too large, I usually check google image search for other sizes of the image.
Stretching a small image results in quality loss and squishing a larger one still transfers the full size, taking the same amount of time and bandwidth.

There many interesting tricks one can use for fine-tuning layout.   I recommend visiting Steffy's Magic Shop, or Steffy's Spellbook.

And remember that if you really want to keep the full size of the original picture fuly intact, just put it in a spoiler and put a warning above that the picture is enormous.

I did this with Oppelbodra's image from my story thread, which is a whopping 3,000 by 3,000 px.

EDIT: On second thought... resizing the pictures and simply warning about the huge dimensions (among other things~) of their originals is much better. Makes it so that I don't need to hide the alurring pics behind a spoiler.
