“Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.”

― Arthur C. Clarke

In the year 2025 the Earth was abuzz with a renewal of UFO hysteria. Crop Circles, missing people reports and cattle mutilations were skyrocketing. Sometimes entire families would disappear, their food left to mold, their TVs still on. As if they had just got up and walked away. Lights are seen in the skies, and technology sometimes fluctuates as invader ships interfere with radio waves and internet signals. The world holds its breath for what is to be the end of mankind, or a new beginning.

But the world was not totally unprepared. In 2024, the world first caught sign of the invading forces thanks to a single astronomer who caught sight of the object. At first it was believed to have been a simple asteroid. Its discoverer, Dr Ramakesh, gives it the name Chandra after the Hindu goddess of the Moon. Chandra is estimated to have a diameter of 7,500 meters and a weight of 700,000 tons. It is approximately the size of the Everest with a greater density due to its metallic composition. It is travelling on a direct course for Earth. It looks as if it will be an Earth killer, but before Dr. Ramakesh can report his findings, he is silenced, and various governments begin a cover up operation to ensure the news does not get wind of it. They met with mixed results, the public learning about the object, with panic ensuing. Soon they are given even more reason to fear, as the true nature of the object was discovered thanks to long range space probe, which managed to photograph the object.

It was not an asteroid at all. It was a space ship, and each day it came closer and closer to Earth. In the ensuing uproar of fear, even Dr. Ramakesh commits suicide, his suicide note showing how afraid he was of what was coming soon. But while some took this as a chance to be afraid, others took it as a chance to prepare. With a year of preparation, several countries met in secret, forming plans for unified military forces to combat the alien threat. Bases were built quickly, or older ones were reactivated and updated. While not every nation on Earth was prepared or willing to cooperate, enough banded together under the banner of the United Nations, that proper steps were taken to prepare for a long war with the invaders.

After that year of readiness ended, the alien ship disappeared. Fear and relief soon turned to outrage as people began to feel it was all a hoax. Then realized that they were not gone. Simply hiding behind the moon where no missile could strike at them, but their influence was still felt as they staged incursions onto Earth, and strikes that disable communication and spy satellites. Some even attempt to hack into secure systems. Many are waiting for the other shoe to drop, and people try to make the best of things and pretend that there is no invasion.

Then the fighting truly began on July 26th. Without warning, without demand, without mercy, the first battle of Earth begins. What began as a simple aerial engagement between two fighter jets and a UFO over the skies of California turned into a full on retaliatory strike as the aliens sent down a rescue for their downed UFO, and to show the humans that the entire system was now under new ownership.Local police and SWAT attempted to hold back the alien attackers, and were slaughtered down to the last, eve those that tried to run or surrender. The Aliens had finally made landfall, and were intent on showing the humans that resistance would not be tolerated.

The only response was to meet force with force as National Guard forces move in to take back the territory at the heart of the city where the Chandra have settled in.

The Chandra had dug themselves in like oversized ticks. They had to be fought directly and cleared out room by room, street by street, block by bloody block. Many soldiers and civilians lost their lives, either to direct Chandra attack or being caught in the crossfire. But the area had been retaken. The aliens were killed and a few were even taken alive for study and interrogation. The battle concludes by the evening of the next day with a count of 127 dead, 32 missing and 38 wounded among the population and law enforcement. Photos of the attack flood the Internet and the mass media.

Military casualties are kept secret, but aliens casualties are counted at 27.

No one wanted to talk about how many had been killed in exchange for so few aliens, but it was a much needed morale victory. It showed that the aliens could be fought in the air, and that they could be fought soldier to soldier. It was also the very first (at least publicly known) mission for the Global Defense Initiative. A televised recording of them rappelling down into an office building to engage an Alien sniper position was played on screens across the world.

While much of the fighting had been done by local forces, the Xcorps were akin to special forces, and whenever they struck at the aliens they found success and proved how useful they were in this war.

The Attack in San Francisco was only the beginning. New attacks came, aerial engagements, pitched gun battles between local forces, militias, Xcorps, and the invaders. Some areas are completely lost, going dark with jamming equipment preventing spy planes, forcing local forces to perform scouting ops in person in preparation for a strike against the invaders.

By August 9th all communication is lost with several regions of south-eastern Europe, Africa, North America and Asia. The affected areas include whole cities in Hungary, Belarus, South Africa, Sudan, Alaska, Colorado, Vermont, Russia, China and the Japanese islands. Satellites stop broadcasting, phone
and radio contact is lost with the so-called ‘Dark Zones’. Scientists speculate that there may be many more lost areas. Some people, who manage to escape, talk of an invasion in those areas and of prisoner camps. Full alert is declared, but the threat is not considered a full-scale invasion.

On August 10th Local military and Global Defense forces are mobilized to investigate the Dark Zones. They find small pockets of resistance in those areas,
formed mainly by first responders and volunteers. There is little other news; some speak of exterminations and aberrant experiments.

On August 13 The city of Ostrava in the Czech Republic, which had become a Dark Zone, is destroyed in a 40-megaton antimatter explosion during a fight to reclaim it. More than 120,000 civilian casualties and thousands of missing persons are estimated. The damage is catastrophic for kilometres around. A dust cloud forms above Europe, partially hiding the Sun and lowering global temperatures.

By august august 16th, all operations into Dark Zones are ended. The Alien Counter-menace Commission halts all Global Defense initiatives to recover Dark Zones from alien control, which are officially left to fend for themselves. There are mass protests in the streets demanding stronger interventions, but with the number of small outbreaks, the protection of critical locations is considered a priority. The first critical voices against the work of Global Defense start to be heard.

Local forces now focus on containing Dark Zones, and responding to other alien actions, while the main brunt of the fight is left to the Xcorps.

Since then mankind has had to adjust to the change in society and their place in the universe. Although life goes on, the impact on humanity learning that we aren’t alone in the universe, and the hostility of our newly discovered neighbors, has caused radical changes at every level. But in most parts of the world people still go to work, pay their bills, shop in supermarkets and watch sports on television. However, a feeling of unspoken fear is deeply ingrained in most households. Contracts for alarms connected to private security centers have increased by 400%.

Alcohol consumption has doubled and religious attendance now borders on the levels of past centuries. People reinforce their homes, and weapons sales have soared up to stratospheric levels. Many supermarkets have increased their supplies, as people stockpile basic necessities. The suicide rate has forced governments to install help lines and psychotherapy offices to address the frequent panic and anxiety attacks experienced by the population. Official bulletins on alien activity are all over the news and there are constant government messages and advice. Police presence in the large urban centers, especially in the most sensitive spots, is constant. Critical installations (civil aviation, nuclear power plants, water plants, etc.) have had their security reinforced by the military. Militia groups are forming left and right now with lack of proper enforcement, some seeking to protect their communities from aliens, and some to try and enforce their own will upon others before the world ends. Sometimes government resources have to be relocated to deal with homegrown terrorists or other troublemakers who threaten to make an already bad situation worse.

Despite government mandates, inflation, especially on basic necessity products, has skyrocketed. Consumer-rights platforms accuse governments of failing to enforce the rules on such situations - which demand strong measures and avoid any abuse. While some large companies have seen their profits increase, many people have fallen under the poverty line because they can’t afford the most basic goods.

And that is just the tip of the iceberg. With Coalition troops retreating across the world, and multinational groups starting to collapse without support or funding, areas of the world that were already standing on a knife's edge are beginning to erupt into bloody and terrible violence. Fighting over resources or old rivalries suddenly being inflamed. With the world worried about the Chandra threat, extremists in the Middle East have moved in force. Chains of attacks are spreading terror and death in countries like Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon and Algeria. Ethnic killings in Africa are constant.

The balance of power is so precarious that some countries have tried to take advantage in the midst of the crisis. One example is how Iran and North Korea have used it to rearm and threaten their neighbors in search of resources. Or in the case of China, who is starting to rise as a first world power nd using the crisis to achieve dominance of the pacific and ensure its own survival.

In the middle of all this is Global Defense, the multinational organization in charge of the defense against the alien threat and the men and women that make it up, known in street slang as the X-Corps (and sometimes derogatorily as 'Xcom' or 'Xfiles'.. Some view them with hope, as saviors, while others fear their power or doubt their efficacy.

Either way, the actions of the X-Corps will be what finally decides the fate of humanity. If we shall come out triumphant from this dark time, or if this is our last battle before we all go into that cold night.

So after that setup I'm going to get down to the nitty gritty. I'm looking for an RP set within the rpg setting of First Contact: X-Corps. Though I am more than happy to see things changed up and the Chandra invaders changed to be less generic aliens. It could change to something more akin to X-Corps vs Cthulhu if need be. Or making the aliens much more terrifying and unknowable as opposed to greys with plasma guns. Maybe more something akin to Fire In the Sky. I'm up for talking it over.

I'm looking for someone who can help run it with some system elements and wouldn't mind helping teach me the system as we play. Although I know it is hard to find these days i have my own copies and i am happy to share them if you need them.

If this interests you please PM me and we can work things out and see how things go. We could start it off before the San Francisco attack, or after it. We can work out any number of details to make this easier.
