In writing, a flaw is not the interesting part of a character.  What is interesting is how a person overcomes a flaw.  I want to read how a person overcomes a flaw, not how the flaw overcomes the person.

Looks like it is only page 12 that is messed up.  Page 1 and page 11 are both good.

Hi, I have been lurking for a while as I reviewed my posting schedule and available game slots. I have recently had several games fall apart and their obituaries have been posted this week. I have a shapeshifter, but the Emma Watson character you have, sorry the name escapes me for the nonce, has elasticity to an extent that I thought this would be double posting.

This is directed at Brittlby: Are you more the thousand faces of the world or do you supplement your body with new features, added arms, a tail, wings? Or is it just that we could force you into a testtube or suitcase with appropriate incentive or sufficient fighting.

I have a character that would focus on the internal chemistry and body modification that would offer an appropriately sized prehensile scorpion tail with venom sac, augmented muscle structure, chitinous armoring, wings, prehensile hair, mix and match as skill progresses. Though your elasticity may be too similar for the prehensile hair. No animal forms, yet. And truly, without need or a change of direction I don't see her going that route.

Along with her internal organ adjustments she is a trained veterinarian/biochemist (Not a licensed parmacist). She has the anatomical understanding as well as the organelle/organ knowledge to be a qualified surgeon, but not a licensed doctor.

She has absolute control over her internal chemistry, all of the chemistry. She can take in chemicals and synthesize or manufacture any chemical composition. (Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, a few other elements and she can produce any petrochemical)

I want to clear this as an option before I continue with the idea. I have a few other ideas to work with if it is too close to another idea or redundant in too much detail.

I have a mechanical genius idea, an alien in a box, or even a summoner. I guess my first question is, do you still have room?

The Doc would be a donation from the super organization to offer her a quiet place to deal with her PTSD.

The alien would be a bi-product of the Eclipse. Having taken over a broken piece of advanced tech from somewhere as a house for his energy-based life form to interact with this world.

the mechanical genius would be a run away from the last vestige of the (insert foreign military here).

The summoner would have awoken after the Eclipse with a pet and few memories.

Have we any preferences, the only reason I offered the first is she is my preference, but I don't wish to step on toes. All are almost complete concepts if not fully typed out.

Sorry, I'm a bit confused by your post -- you seem to have several thoughts going on at once. Dani Danger has the abilities of elasticity, meaning that she can stretch her body and manipulate its shape (like Mr. Fantastic in the Fantastic Four).

Yes, we still have room for students. I have plenty of supervisors already, though. It sounds like your shapeshifter can really just modify chemical energy? I'm a bit lost on your description, I'm afraid. Please choose powers from this list, rather than making up a complicated power. There are several well-described shapeshifting powers on that site that I encourage you to read through.

I will say this again. I am not a fan of body possession. If you are playing an alien, they have to be a human-like alien, as this game is posted on the Human: Bondage section. If they are a sentient form of matter than inhabits something else to only appear human, that's too exotic for E's Human section, and it complicates future plot lines for me, so I will not approve your character.

An alien in my game means that they look/act human, but were simply born on a planet other than Earth. Also, no pets.

Edit: We also have a nurse who is effectively our medical person/supervisor. If you go with your first character, they would be a student (not a doctor), and due to the lack of animals around, a veterinarian wouldn't have a lot to do from day to day at the Cathedral. A veterinarian/doctor would have been hired by the remaining government to help develop a new way of growing crops and eliminating disease in the post-Apocalyptic world. They'd be wayyy too skilled and invaluable to be at Cathedral. One of the many Entities would have found and recruited them for sure. The Cathedral is a place for misfits :)

I should also note too, having PTSD does not make your character unique. Every character who participated in the Eclipse has PTSD to some degree (Barry and Gigi even have mental health concerns and they didn't participate). I expect most characters to have PTSD; I encourage it.

However: the IOS (International Organization of Supers) would not have sent their prized Doctor to the Cathedral to process their PTSD. The Cathedral is not a treatment center, it is a school, so that does not make sense. Additionally, the IOS doesn't favor the Cathedral. The IOS tolerates the Cathedral's neutrality -- but they do not agree with it. They want the Cathedral to generate supers that serve them, even though that's not the goal of the Cathedral.

The IOS would have medicated the Doctor and forced them to continue working, or sent them to an actual, underground treatment facility had their PTSD interfered with their daily tasks.

At this point in the timeline, any character who is coming to the Cathedral is doing so of their own accord. The Cathedral is a mansion (e.g. its max capacity is 20 people), so it's one of the smaller, satellite schools. It's funded by the IOS, but it certainly isn't the priority of the IOS by any means.

Recruitment page has been updated to reflect what I am looking for in this game.

At this point, I am seeking 4 more students.

Please see the Approved Characters thread to see what powers are taken, and the kinds of characters we are looking for.
The 'desired plot lines' section of each character is a great starting point.

Sorry, this was where I realized my Shapeshifter may have a place here. She seems to be too much, all to the good I have more.

Hi! Good question.
First, the powers should be plausible (eg. something from the list I posted on the first page).
Second, if someone has that power or it is too similar, I’ll ask you to change it.

Off the top of my head, here are some classic ones no one has:
Invisibility
Force Field Creation
Illusion Manipulation
Any Vision Power except for Chrono and Probability Vision  (there are a lot of these LOL)
Matter Manipulation (eg. fire, water, earth, etc. From a character standpoint, your character having fire manipulation would be real interesting for Tristyn)
Superior Intellect
Superior Accuracy
Shape Shifting

Again, the website I linked has hundreds of options. :D

You said no pets, may I ask why? Is it a numbers thing, or is it because all recognized animal life has been crippled if not wiped out. Or additional resources at The Cathedral would not be available for this pets? In that case I was thinking his first elemental summons, but needing clarification here.

Would you have a problem with a Multiple Man type character. A young girl (18) who can copy herself.  Starting with two clones available. This would play into the Superior Intelligence thing as there is Collective Intelligence that would allow for amping Int for a time.

Edit: Nope, just saw Eric, pulling this entry.

My issue with your shape-shifting isn't that it wouldn't be useful, it's that I don't understand how it works for your character. From the sounds of it, you're more interested in organic matter manipulation, which allows them to control the chemicals in their body and the chemicals around them. I would need more clarification if this is the power you want to go with, since 'shape-shifting' is a very broad ability.

No pets because a) all died in the post-Apocalyptic climate (it's a massive heatwave, with no plants and no massive bodies of water), b) the Cathedral is working with limited funding and resources which would not be expended to pets, c) character's with pets spend too much time with the pet instead of interacting with other characters and d) keeping track of pets is just a pain for any GM. No pets, sorry.

There is already another character who can create copies of themselves.
Superior intelligence is untaken, if you wanted to do that.

Honestly, that website has so many powers. Here's a few more no one has:
- Power Mimicry
- Power Absorption
- Size Manipulation
- Deceleration
- Time Travel
- Ice Manipulation
- Heat Manipulation
- Power Negation
- Power Deflection
- Metal Manipulation
- Peak Longevity
- Dream Manipulation
- Solar Manipulation
- Sonic Manipulation
- Spatial Powers

There are some powers that are obviously poor choices -- rainbow or garbage manipulation among them -- but the only ones that I've definitely shot down are anything involving soul or life-force manipulation, because that tends to upset other players.

Thinking a half-alien, born here on earth, Hyper Intellect, metal manipulation for powers. Has anyone taken Marisha Ray for face claim? I don't think so, just touching base.

Now I want to play a character with rainbow manipulation who is super annoyed by their own power. :D

Antigone Ray Shanae Ellington

Nicknames: Tiggy, ARSEnal, Gone
Age:19
Build: 5 ft 8 in / 135 lbs
Hair:Coppery blonde
Eyes: Sable brown, though a luminous blue under power activation
Origin: Earth
Gender Identity: Female
Sexual Orientation:Experimental, for now

Face Claim:Marisha Ray

Role:Student
Designation: Luminary
Superpowers:

  • Hyper Intelligence - Alien Genetic Memory provides her with greater understanding and reliable experience that she can access for processing new situations and needs. This provides her an extensive understanding of mechanics, physics, and design.
  • Metal Manipulation - another gift from her mother, Tiggy can detect metals within a mile, or a hundred feet below the surface. Along with this detection she is able to manipulate it in a ferrokinetic fashion up to several hundred pounds at a time. This ability is not limited to individual pieces but to weight limits for now. The engine of a civic, or ten thousand nuts and bolts, the lifting and maneuverability is the same. Though currently only able to maneuver six individual thought processes, or two separate routines at this time.

Personality:

  • Obsessive - A place for everything, and EVERYTHING in its place, She likes her rituals, same pattern every time she enters the shop, raise the lights, review the tools (in their place of course, or soon to be), review today’s project, lift the racks to sweep. Tend to her blueprints ‘shrine’, and begin the days work.
  • Fustillarian - Always willing to correct when someone is wrong, even to the slightest degree. Know-It-All
  • Physical - Why say something when actions not only say it but get it done.
  • Questioning - Always asking, “Why?” The reason behind the action, phenomena, or circumstance is key.
  • Uninhibited - Bashful behavior and fear of silly things like public exposure or embarrassment are not reasonable.

Backstory: Dad was Navy, so was Mom, though she was with the Trans-Galactic Fleet. She was a Science nerd according to dad, and needed a distraction one day. He fit the bill. They tried to stay in touch, but something about long-distance rates out of planetary system. Dad was a kidder. After the Navy, dad went to work for OSHA, teaching safety coordinators how to keep their crews safe. Which meant we moved, a lot. Every three to six months, a new home, new school, new bullies. I learned that numbers, books, and running were my friends. I was deemed a nerd, but didn’t have the poor hygiene, thick glasses or awkward social stigma to be a geek. The teachers who graded on the curve took pity on me and removed my scores before checking, eventually.

I was a senior by fourteen, and by eighteen held a Masters in Mechanical Engineering, I minored in Creative Writing. I was insulted by a teacher who trying to compliment me, said I was as technical as car radio instructions. I was told by my instructor that I needed experience, my word choices, setting, and character development were spot on, but there was only second hand sensation.

Then the world broke and to shelter myself I wrapped myself in the steel girders of the graduation ceremony pavilion. When I had dug and stressed the girders free of me, I found the landscape had changed, I could now feel and manipulate the metals about me. Not like that again, but often breakthroughs are violent things. Far outreaching their commonplace response. I would grow, I would get there. I would help stop this.

I was shunned as one of those who would sacrifice all to accomplish the goal. Wasn’t that the point. I couldn’t understand their hate. We did it. An all or nothing fight, and we did it. I don’t even remember it clearly, but my reputation reached an all time high when the hallucinations started. I took command of a few who had not succumbed and we cleared the area, all who were hallucinating, put down or incapacitated. High casualties that day, even one of mine who lost it after we began.

Participant in the Eclipse: Yes, I helped stop this.

After the Eclipse: I need interaction, life experiences to understand my reputation. No one ever looked out for me, I did what I did to make sure as many survived as I could ensure. Risked as few as possible and cut the losses when necessary. Yet, heartless is what I was called, even by the few who followed me, one with a smile on his face. Mathers, he was tried for high crimes afterwards. I was reviewed, and it was decided that if I would drop the name Gone, I would be released, as my actions though critical were not necessarily the wrong ones, just not the compassionate ones. I never accepted the monicker and held no love of it, so dropped it as any other title. Commander, Gone, Bitch. They swept me under the rug. No war hero here. Ok, here was here. That was enough. Then she heard of a place where those without a place belonged. She started for the Cathedral.

Her reputation preceded her, the Knives of Artemis recruited her, and she was useful. Coldly working her way through activity to activity. They didn’t seem interested in innovation, only control through providing a frowned upon service. Then someone came, heading to The Cathedral, reminding me of where I should be going as well. I was seeking new experiences, not just a means to exercise my old ways. Four dead ‘Knives’ and a collapsed ravine wall, and I walked away.

Character Ons: Available, Interested, Something New, Discovery.
Character Offs: Bad Timing, Wishy-Washy, toilet, blood, waste.

Desired Plots & Connections:

  • Education in humanity, burned out long before it had a chance to be nurtured
  • True relationships, friendship more than sex.
  • Dealing with her past and overcoming her reputation.

Just to note, the game is written in third-person. I don't mind that you've written your CS in first person, but it will seem a little out of place in character posts.

I have been thinking about my second characters powers.  She is going to be an alien.  She is going to join the school because she knows very little about the Earth.

Powers I am thinking about, writing things down helps me think and feedback is always welcome:
Supernatural Body: probably crosses with Kaine and twins, would be mainly physical and not the mental aspects
Environmental Adaptation: more of reactive power and might have little use ingame
Reactive Adaptation: too powerful?  Limitations along the lines of only able to hold adaptation for limited time
Flight: maybe interstellar
Kinetic Energy Manipulation
By accepting what is and making the best use of every situation, life can be fulfilled without a constant demand for more. --Wen Tzu

In writing, a flaw is not the interesting part of a character.  What is interesting is how a person overcomes a flaw.  I want to read how a person overcomes a flaw, not how the flaw overcomes the person.

Yeah I think Supernatural Body is claimed already (three times, haha). Although I’d maybe let you do heightened senses if you really wanted it/worked out a creative way to use it. Environmental adaptation would be cool, but it’s mostly just going to be one environment the whole game. I have someone building a character with Kinetic Energy Manipulation so I’m afraid that’s taken.

Flight is fine. Reactive adaptation sounds interesting. Describe how you’d want it to work.

Blehh, my brain is full of numbers today, doing accounting stuff.     Haven't been able to think of a good power concept for Reactive adaptation yet.  :P

Lol, okay. There are many forms reactive powers. Including Power Reflection, which I mentioned earlier (which is reactionary and can be used as both a defense/offensive move) and even things like Attack Reversal. Or force fields and the like could apply too :)

I am thinking about combining Reactive adaptation with Environment Adaptation.  Stepping into a gas cloud, she can breathe the gas safely.  In darkness, she develops the ability to see in the dark.  Gets hit by fire, develops Immunity to fire.  Buried underground, develops the ability to burrow through ground.  Falling from great enough height, would have time to develop flight.

There would be a limited number of adaptations she could maintain at once.  As she learns to use powers, that number could grow.  Once a stimulus that caused an adaptation goes away, the adaptation should fade with time.

Another consideration is can she consciously control changes or they happen automatically to changes/threats.  I could see her starting out with limited conscious control to full control.

Would the changes cause a physical change or an internal energetic change?  Could think of it like a forcefield around her that changes properties as stimulus changes??

In writing, a flaw is not the interesting part of a character.  What is interesting is how a person overcomes a flaw.  I want to read how a person overcomes a flaw, not how the flaw overcomes the person.

yeah if you limit it to physical adaptations it might be good, rather then being Darwin(who broke X-men) it would be more, subtle. You would be able to gain improved sternth, speed, durability...but adapting energy projection or other things..in your example of falling from great hights you would probably gain mechanical flight so growing wings, bones becoming lighter and stuff like that.

So not like when Darwin tried to go toe to toe with the hulk, and his power decided the best way to fight the Hulk was to not fight him and teleported him to the middle of the ocean on the other side of the world.

if you want to limit it another way, you can cause it to burn through lipids and stored chemical energy (kinda like Momo Yaoyorozu from My hero Acadamia) putting a physical limitation on the adaptations being held.

Thanks Isengrad, good suggestions! :)
