So, what exactly is Gallows Green?

Put simply, Gallows Green is a mystery-horror-drama with a healthy dose of the surreal and uncanny. It's heavily inspired by the television show Twin Peaks, if you're familiar. Other good examples might include Stranger Things, The X-Files, Silent Hill, Riverdale, and really any of the collected works of David Lynch.

The idea revolves around a small town in the United States called Gallows Green. While the town lacks much in the way of population, it seems to be a home to all manner of supernatural or otherwise bizarre happenings; a place where the veil between our world and the next is just a little bit too thin. What sort of bizarre happenings, you ask? Oh nothing much. Just dimensional tears in the fabric of reality, haunted woods where you always feel like you're being watched, FBI agents milling about outside of coffee shops for seemingly no reason at all, your next door neighbor chanting hypnotic dirges in his front yard on a moonless night, a stranger stalking the local trailer park where pets have recently gone missing, rumors of doppelgangers appearing with threats of violence, and even an occasional occult murder behind the local bar. Just usual small town stuff, you know?

The premise is honestly pretty simple. This is a place where all those spooky stories and urban legends are not only true, but flanked on all sides by things that are far weirder and far more dangerous than ghost stories around a campfire. Things get real weird and those that are attuned to the fact that things aren't quite right find themselves swept up in the inconceivable, the unexplainable, and the unthinkable. Being inspired by Twin Peaks, there will be plenty of room for interpersonal struggle, conflict, romance, and so forth as well. In fact, at times I fully expect things to lean more towards soap opera. There's always a sense of normalcy even with mystery and horror around every corner.

What can I play and what do you currently need?

From the brooding housewife to the quirky FBI agent, pretty much any non-supernatural role is entirely possible. Some roles that would be more overtly involved with the infrastructure and logistics of the town (for example, a member of the city council) may require a bit more knowledge about Gallows Green that I would be more than happy to provide. If you need any help whatsoever with creating a character or advice about what would fit well with the story, just message me!

Currently, we're open to anyone and everyone, though we could probably use a few more male characters to round out the cast a bit.

Rules

  • The Golden Rule: Don't be a dick.
  • Communication is key.
  • No cliques/favoritism. We're all equal here.
  • The GM (long may he reign) is Vulnicura. Ask him anything and everything. He's laidback. I promise.
  • This game is LGBTQ+ friendly. Everyone is welcome to play.
  • This will be a freeform game set in a fictional town. Occasionally, events will happen to introduce more elements to the game. However, the story will largely be driven by the players.
  • Smut is welcome, but should never take precedence over the story. If you're looking for nonstop sexytime, this probably isn't the right game for you.
  • Despite being hosted in the Extreme subforum, this also really isn't the place for extreme kinks. The game is mostly placed there due to the horror genre's proclivity towards gore and the game's potential for violence.
  • Slightly related to the above, if your character is involved in a violent or non-consensual encounter with another, consent of the players involved is required.
  • No drama. Respect everyone OOC. Always follow the Golden Rule. You'll only get one warning before being asked to leave.
  • On the subject of post length, I don't think it's right to enforce my preferences on others. As long as your post adds to a scene or provides insight into your character, the length of the post itself doesn't matter at all.
  • I also don't like the idea of enforcing a posting rate requirement. To me, this seems like it could potentially remove some of the fun of the game and make it more of a chore. Muses are fickle and real life always takes precedence. While it would certainly be appreciated if these times of low involvement were communicated with the group, I don't see a required posting rate as necessary or good for the game. That being said, if we don't hear from you for a while, I may check in to make sure everything is okay and that you're still interested in the game.
  • Probably my biggest pet peeve: Never ever under any circumstances have OOC knowledge affect your IC thoughts or actions. In other words, if your character would have no way of knowing something within the context of the game that you the player know outside of the game, keep it that way. Respect the seperation between OOC and IC.
  • This goes back to the Golden Rule, but should really go without saying: No godmodding. No controlling other player's characters. No trying to make everything all about your character all the time.

Questions and Answers

Who is the RP open to?
Anyone and everyone. Lords, Ladies, and Legates are all welcome. Hetero, LGBTQ+, you name it.

Is this actually related to Twin Peaks and do I need to have watched the show to participate?
No. Not at all. This is an entirely separate universe and does not take place within the meta of Twin Peaks or any other fiction. While you definitely don’t have to have watched the show to participate, it might help to be somewhat familiar with it in order to understand the general feel that we’re going for. That being said, as long as you understand the general idea, you’re more than welcome to play!

What extent will players be allowed to create/use environment or setting details?
I am of the mind that this won't succeed without giving players free agency to create and interact with the world in ways that they want. If anything comes up that may affect the world in a way that would have huge consequences, I'd like it to be ran by me first, but I'll likely try to make it work in the overarching story.

How will NPCs be handled?
Gallows Green is going to be presented as a living, breathing town that not only includes a multitude of townspeople but also several supernatural entities. Players will be encouraged to use most of these NPCs to their hearts content, but some more important NPCs may be limited to GM use.

What sort of posting rate are you looking for?

I have a character concept that I wrote up for a premise very much like this that I never really got a chance to write, and she probably belongs more in a group game than a solo.  If she could be tweaked to fit the story, I'd be very interested.

Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

NAME: Layla Covington
AGE: 28
SEXUALITY: Straight
OCCUPATION: Quasi-businesswoman, caretaker of her family's assets
HEIGHT: 5'7"

DISTINGUISHING MARKS:  Tattoo of the Eye of Horus on the inside of her left wrist, a tattoo of the Eye of Ra on the inside of her right, and a white scar that runs diagonally across her right palm

FACE CLAIM: Alessandra Ambrosio

BEST KNOWN AROUND TOWN FOR: Coming from a wealthy family with a big old streak of crazy running down the family tree

HOME: Layla lives on a houseboat on Lake Greystone.  It's a nice houseboat, but it's nowhere as near nice as the big house she sold when her parents died.  Given how she hates swimming and the water, the town just figured it was another one of those 'family eccentricities'

ABOUT: Outwardly tough, Layla doesn't seem to give a damn what anybody thinks of her, though when the wind blows up off the Gulf and the waves start rocking that houseboat she lives on, that toughness of hers can crack like a pottery bowl dropped on stone, and she's been known a time or two to curl up sobbing like a little baby in the corner.  A few years ago, right after her brother went missing, folks got worried enough about her caterwauling' during a bad storm to call an ambulance for her, and she was hauled off to the hospital.  They say the doctors wanted to commit her to the loony bin, but quick as a flash some suit showed up claiming to be her lawyer, and the docs backed down.

Most of the time, though, Layla’s just a woman who has money and minds her own business.  She does what she pleases, and isn’t inclined to explain herself to nobody.  She takes care of the businesses her family owned, the rental houseboats and the cabins, the gift shops and what have you, not only on Lake Greystone but in other spots across the state and into Louisiana.

Her parents left everything to her and her brother when they died, except for their house which they left to her and she sold.  The estate was still in probate when her brother’s overturned speedboat was found floating bottom-side up on Lake Graystone, and until he’s declared legally dead in a couple more years, or he’s found – dead or alive – she’s stuck, if anybody with more money in the bank than most folk in Pinebox earn in a lifetime, can truly be considered stuck.

Still, though she’s odd, as anybody will tell you, she’s pretty good to help out with charities and things, and when anybody gets lost on the lake or any body of water within a hundred miles, she’s right there, puttin’ up the money to hire boats and divers and what not to drag the lake.  Seems like she don’t want nobody else goin’ through the agony of wonderin’ since her parents weren’t ever found when their boat went down somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico, and then her brother …

‘Course, there are some that say that her brother ain’t dead at all.  Everybody around these parts knew he was a dope fiend, money and breedin’ an’ all.  Snorting, smoking, shooting … he got more than one good kid hooked on the stuff, not for needin’ the money, but just pure damn malice according to gossip.  The Feds were closing in on him, or so the scuttlebutt goes, when he took his boat out on the lake, high, and just never come back.  There was a lot of people that breathed a sigh of relief, though it would've been a bigger one if they knew for sure he was dead.

Layla agrees that he was one mean son of a bitch.  She knows he's dead, and out there in that lake.  She hears him sometimes, in the storm, and sees his shadow moving under the waves, like a fucking freshwater shark, just waiting for her to make a mistake.

As to what's happening in Pinebox, Layla's got it in her blood.  Except in the storms, she pays it little mind.  Everybody's got their demons, everbody's got their curse.  As to what is the cause of it, she believes that it IS a curse, though the form it takes is different for everybody.  It's all tied to the water, though, and for herself, she only drinks the bottled kind, and the filter she uses on the water that comes into the boat is special ordered, and replaced religiously once a week.

Her curse, of course, is her brother, but it goes back longer than that.  Her family came by their money the old-fashioned way -- they screwed somebody for it, and it has something to do with the Lake.  Knowing the particulars, however, isn't going to stop it, so she stopped bothering being curious quite some time ago.

WHAT SCARES YOU?: Deep water.  Things that live under it.  Things that are under it that ain’t alive.  Bein’ sucked down into the cold depths, clawing at it until you don’t know which way is up and which is down.

HOBBIES:  Fishing.  Painting.  Collecting just about anything, from fancy fishing flies to momento mori rings to rusty old bells off ships.  Drinking.

EXTRAS: Layla has had a few relationships, mostly with men who were interested more in her money than her.  To be fair, she seemed well aware of their motives, and used them for what she wanted out of them but gave little more.  A few little gifts was the most they got out of it, other than whatever pleasure they took in her company.  Local men that she's had little 'flings' with have fared better, with Layla helping them out with jobs, loans, even a place to live, but her help is always conditional, and there is always a time limit.

She has no patience with people looking for an easy ride.  Nothing's easy - that's just the way it is, so they can damn well get used to it just like everybody else.  The fact that they have a pretty face, a nice body, or are good in the sack doesn't make them any more deserving.

Her tolerance for alcohol is heightened.  She's not a habitual drug user, but sometimes when the storms come, she's tried to get through them with prescriptions, a joint, some of the harder shit coming out of Mexico.  Drugs made it worse.  Much worse.  Now she takes Tylenol when she has to and leaves the other shit (other than alcohol) alone.

Hey guys! Glad you're interested!

Gypsy, I'll read over your character as soon as I have some free time, but a cursory glance suggests she would fit perfectly.

Norsegod1839

I'd be interested! Both in oining the game and helping you as a co gm if you want?

MingMing

I am a huge Twin Peaks fan...  I'm very interested in this, but trying to think of a concept that I feel would worthy of this kind of a game.  Are you going for more of a S1 and S2 feel?  Or more of a Fire Walk With Me and S3 "The Return" feel?

I may have an idea, but it's based partially in leaving a LOT of details to the Storyteller to develop in secret.  So I'll brew on how to really flesh out what's there overtly first.  :-)

(If I don't know you, haven't communicated with you in PM's or through the Elliquiy Forums, don't just IM me out of the blue.  I will just close the window & ignore you.  Take the trouble to actually send me a greeting & talk with me in Elliquiy first!)

I'm still working that out, to be honest. It likely won't be anything too crazy and I'm pretty open to ideas when it comes to the logistics of all of this. I plan on reading through suggestions on the GMs corner later today and I'll have a full answer for you.

Glad you're interested! If this does get off the ground and a Co-GM seems necessary, I'll definitely let you know.

Also a huge fan (obviously). Ideally, I'd like to skirt the line between the two. Personally, I'd like it to be a mix of the character driven stories and humor of S1/S2 paired with the worldbuilding and abject surrealism of The Return and FWWM (to a lesser extent on the latter).

Kit

Consider me intrigued even though I only heard distant things of Twin Peaks. If it doesn't mind to accept a non-connaisseur in the group (even though I'm a big fan of the first seasons of X-Files) I'll be glad to tag along. I'll do my fair share of lore-learning on my side though.

KingKang

Hey,

I love Twin Peaks (All seasons and Fire Walk With Me) and would definitely be interested in playing in this. I'd love to play a down to earth local in a weird/spooky town.

Count me in :)

Valerian

Though I haven't seen Twin Peaks in ages, I always loved the atmosphere of it.  I'd be interested in playing, though I'm still pondering options.

Vulnicura

I'm actually super surprised (and delighted!) that this has had such a great response so far. If anyone else finds themselves interested, please feel free to let me know! I'm going to delve into the GM Corner a bit and start planning this out as more than just a concept. I'll try to get an update up as soon as possible. :)

LadyMalabranche

Twin Peaks was one of the first properties I ever fell in love with, I'm definitely interested in taking part in this if possible :-).

Vulnicura

It would seem that we have enough interest to start planning this all out in earnest. While I still have a lot of work to do on my side as far as world building and planning goes, I went ahead and updated the main post with a character sheet, some questions/answers, and a bit more information added to the bulk of things. If you're interested, feel free to go ahead and start putting together your characters and PM to them to me/post them here! I'm working on mine as we speak. :) As always, if you have any questions whether they be on the logistics of the game or the setting itself, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer (even if that means making it up on the spot).

Reuben Grimes

Basic Information

Full Name: Reuben Grimes
Nicknames: Nook
Sex: Male
Age: 28
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Occupation: Record Store Clerk

Physical Description

Face Claim: Elias Bender Ronnenfelt
Height: 5’9”
Weight: 140 lbs
Eye Color: Green
Hair Color: Dark Brown
Prominent Features or Distinguishing Marks: Several tattoos, mostly occult symbols, including: the Eye of Providence over his heart, an Ouroboros on his left wrist, and a Unicursal Hexagram on the nape of his neck. A scar also runs along his left hip where he was injured during a car crash.

General Physical Description: Reuben is the very definition of brooding, tragic ‘rockstar’. Thin and pale with an objectively handsome face always framed by a few strands of messy brown hair, Reuben stands at 5’9” and weighs roughly 140 lbs., though his weight tends to fluctuate depending on his mood and the day of the week. One of his most notable features is his piercing eyes, which hold a quiet intensity behind them that always makes people feel like he’s looking through them instead of at them. His body is riddled with tattoos, mostly occult symbols and always in jet black ink. His fashion sense ranges from eccentric to basic, usually settling on darker colors that contrast against his complexion.

Personality Description

Personality Traits:

  • Individualistic - Individualism is the one thing that Reuben values above all else. He yearns to be himself completely, despite what others may think or want of him. Though this means that he can be difficult at times and impossible to peg down, it also means that he goes out of his way to come off as interesting.
  • Charismatic -  Despite his other idiosyncrasies and seemingly introverted nature, Reuben is not without his charms and comes off as indescribably endearing more often than not. He always seems to know just the right words to say and how to phrase them in such a way to really drive the point across.
  • Introspective - Reuben is obsessed with his own consciousness and the inner space that exists inside of his head. This has manifested in his day to day life with meditation, study of mysticism, and a more than passing interest in esoterica.
  • Pessimistic - Reuben has always been pessimistic, focusing on and only ever seeing the worst in the world. While not entirely cheerless, his pessimism has made him somewhat withdrawn and distant from time to time.
  • Neurotic - Ever since his return to Gallows Green, Reuben has been plagued by a mean streak of neuroticism. Prone to anxiety, irritability, depression, and general emotional instability that comes and goes from day to day.

Likes:

  • Music - Truly the driving force behind Reuben’s life up until this point, music has been a part of his very being to the point that one cannot be mentioned in the same sentence without the other.
  • Esoterica - From occult symbology and supposed grimoires to transcendental meditation and sacred objects, Reuben has decorated his life with the strange, bizarre, or otherwise abstruse.
  • Coffee - Two creams, two sugars, and a thousand sleepless nights.

Dislikes:

  • Gallows Green - Reuben hates Gallows Green. Despises it, in fact. He’s often described it as soulsucking and inescapable, seeing it as an oppressive place that shouldn’t exist despite itself. And yet, like a magnet, he’s drawn to the town in ways that he can’t quite comprehend.
  • Dreams - Reuben used to look forward to going to bed at night and the dreams that would await him once he closed his eyes. In recent months, however, those dreams have been replaced by night terrors and visions of trauma that he’d rather not live through again.
  • Morning - Despite his penchant for coffee, Reuben is definitely not a morning person in any way, shape, or form. The only time he sees the sunrise is when he stays up all night.

Biography
Born and raised in Gallows Green, Reuben Grimes hated it from the very start and yearned for an escape. This yearning led him towards music, forming a band called Nook and The Crannies with his twin brother Markus and a few of their friends. Despite finding success and popularity locally, the band soon found the small town far too restrictive for what they were trying to do and decided as a group to relocate to Charlotte to actually pursue their dreams. They found some success, getting airtime on several regional indie radio stations and even putting out two records that were well received by various outlets. However, like a lot of things in Reuben’s life, this wasn’t meant to be and came to a screeching halt. During their first tour traveling across the Southern United States, their van was struck by a drunk driver and sent them careening over an embankment. While Reuben was hospitalized for a few weeks, he managed to escape the crash relatively unscathed save for a few broken bones. Unfortunately, the rest of the band (including his brother) died during the crash or soon after.

In the five years since the accident, Reuben has returned to Gallows Green and started working at a local vinyl record store called Greensleeve Records. He still occasionally performs as a solo act at the local bar under the name Futility Belt, but it’s clear that his mind is usually elsewhere and his creativity has been blocked by tragedy. Reuben has tried desperately to get his life back on track, but whether it be the guilt over the loss of his brother and friends or the feeling of isolation that he has built around himself, he’s been at a standstill for half a decade and truly has no idea where to go.

Reuben has found some level of relief and comfort in immersing himself in esoterica, occultism, and otherworldly pursuits. However, despite whatever relief he may gather, these same pursuits have opened the door for things that Reuben does not fully understand. Most recently, Reuben has been plagued by dreams and visions of his deceased brother, mocking him from beyond the grave and trying to goad him into going into the woods alone to meet. It’s had quite the effect, causing Reuben to go days without sleep and even hallucinate in his waking life.

Notable Relationships

  • Markus Grimes - Reuben’s deceased brother and former bandmate.
  • Desmond Porter - Owner of Greensleeve Records and Reuben’s boss.

I'll post mine tomorrow as well. I'm definitely thinking of playing the eccentric widower who runs/manages the local trailer park.

Vulnicura

Those characters sound great! Take all the time you need, guys.

Tomorrow, I'll be starting to do a bit more in depth world building. Depending on how busy work ends up being, there'll likely be an update with more info on the town, surrounding areas, lore, and NPCs within the next few days.

Leigh-Anne Lee

Basic Information

Full Name:  Leigh-Anne Lee
Nicknames: "Lily" at school and "Lian" at home.
Sex: Female
Age: 18 & 5 days
Ethnicity: Chinese-American
Sexual Orientation: Hetero
Occupation: High School Student

Physical Description

Face Claim: It's a combination of a couple of sources, but mostly the Pop star Iu.
Height: 5' 4"
Weight: 116 lb
Eye Color: Chestnut Brown
Hair Color: Glossy Black
Prominent Features or Distinguishing Marks: Thick Glasses, thrift-store fashion sense.

General Physical Description: You see before you a petite, perky Chinese girl.  Dressed in a conservative hodge-podge of vintage thrift store clothing, she seems quiet and dignified in demeanor.

She is young, perhaps looking just into her late teens, and only now entering that state of ageless beauty that Asian women are so famed for.  Traces of baby fat are still on her face and body, and she has a girlish softness about her that accentuates the impression of an earth spirit like a nymph or dryad.

Her posture and attitude demonstrate an upbringing of both privilege and noblesse oblige.  Her hands often remain clasped with each other, their only notable accessory an imported Huawei satellite phone bedecked with Sanrio stickers.  It's an image of prim-and-proper cuteness that seems quaintly fitting, given her presentation.

She is both gracious in expression and regal in bearing, with an inscrutable intensity in her gaze that makes her seem more mature than her peers.  There is an aura of personal magnetism and charming attractiveness within her, thought she sometimes does not appear to be completely comfortable with it yet.  Those of an earlier generation might have labelled her an "old soul", as well as "a most agreeable girl" after meeting her.

Her accent is faint and yet imperceptibly foreign, being difficult to place.  It is not the typical tonal accent of most English-speaking Asians, but rather almost the dulcet cultured strains of continental European speakers.  She smiles rarely, but when she does it is a restrained smile, showing almost no teeth as her cheeks dimple while the corners of her lips give just the faintest upward hint.

Her eyes are deep warm pools of chocolate brown, full of sunny light and brightness.  Those lively eyes are large and almond-shaped, giving the impression of an exotic sloe-eyed dreamer.  She commonly wears thick-lensed vintage glasses with sturdy chunky plastic frames  Her sculpted porcelain-like features, particularly her pert button nose, give her a quiet sort of attractiveness, more akin to a wholesome 'cuteness' like a doll rather than the cosmopolitan beauty of a high-society girl.  Her hair is lustrous and glossy blue-black, cut short just about even with the back of her neck.

Her breasts are girlish and stand pertly off her athletic shoulders and chest, while her abdomen and waist are well-toned and swell out into wide broad hips, the kind that many old-fashioned folks joke about as 'child bearing hips'.  Her posterior is round and full, having a gentle swell and indentation like a ripened peach.

Strong thighs taper down to dimpled knees and shapely calves, ending with cutely flexed and arching feet.  Her arms are slender and willowy, being neither too skinny nor excessive fatty under the biceps.

All in all, the entire presentation of this enigmatic young woman seems to be calculated to downplay her level of notability, with just enough touch of eccentricity to make her unique in her mask of conformity and understated appearance.

Personality Description

Personality Traits: (Note: At least five traits)

  • Curious: Secrets, gossip, truths & legends, Leigh-Anne has to know.  If something is kept from her, she takes it as almost a personal challenge to squirrel it out and learn what's behind it all.  If she doesn't know the answer to something, she will begin reading and digging for everything she needs to be the source of answers for others.  This does often give her the reputation of being a nosy little-know-it-all.
  • Charming: Luckily Leigh-Anne is also a darling and likable girl-next-door.  She's got sincerity and an open heart, friendly to all, approachable, and has a wholesome image that just inspires people to flock to her.  Needless to say, she's quite popular at school.
  • Kind: Part of what makes Leigh-Anne so well-liked is her sense of empathy and compassion for those around her.  She's genuinely kind, caring, and looks after the general welfare of others around her.  If someone's down, she sticks around them, doing her best to cheer them up.  If they're hurting, she does what she can to ease their pain.  If she sees someone who's lonely, she refuses to let them remain alone.
  • Just: Leigh-Anne also fiercely believes in fair play, justice, and karma.  The easiest way to provoke her outrage is to demonstrate a situation of inequity, injustice, and people benefiting from exploiting the system.  This has partially inspired her to be seek out journalism and law as potential fields of study in her scholastic endeavors.
  • Diligent: Not afraid of hard work and focused study, Leigh-Anne has a mindset that doesn't shirk tasks or responsibility.  She knows she's been extremely lucky, but she's also very proud that she's earned her grades, her accolades, and the respect of her peers.  When it's time to focus on a job, she zeroes-in and doesn't break off til she's satisfied it's done.

Likes:

  • Music: Leigh-Anne is an avid lover of music, singing, and performance.  She's been in her high-school Jazz Band as a vocalist, her high-school marching band as the Drum Majorette, and the high-school symphonic orchestra as their first-chair french horn.  She loves listening to old music, vintage covers, and obscure or forgotten composers.  Her phone is nearly always down half a charge, because she's always listening to something on her headphones.
  • Fashion: Leigh-Anne is a bit of a clothes-horse.  She's loved playing dress-up ever since she was a little girl, often mixing and matching odds and ends from discarded clothing donations to make unique looks for herself  She's learned to sew, and regularly 'rescues' lost clothing from the local thrift store, to create entirely new statements or salvage and repair vintage works of beauty.
  • Cats: Leigh-Anne is a dedicated cat-lover.  She helps out regularly at a cat rescue shelter, and despite the forbiddance of her Father from bringing a cat or kitten home, she often wishes she could adopt entire litters of kittens her shelter saves.  She covers her phone and locker with pictures of cats and kittens, particularly Sanrio's Hello Kitty.
  • Coffee: Leigh-Anne loves fresh coffee, ground in an old-fashioned hand-grinder, with none of the pretentiousness of the franchise coffee chains.  She'll fix herself easily two cups each morning, and three more cups throughout the day before it's near her bedtime.  Her favorite are the dark and strong aromatic blends, eschewing the flavors and essences that seem to be popular amongst her peers.  Her favorite way to take her coffee is with one part milk, three scoops of sugar-substitute, and a scoop of ginseng.

Dislikes:

  • Bullies: Being as fair-minded as she is, it's not a stretch to realize that Leigh-Anne is extremely against bigotry, bullying, and inflicting pain on others.  She's especially quick to anger when she sees helpless animals as victims of senseless violence.  But her level of empathy is strongest with young children, and she'll often stand fast against ignorance and cruelty when she witnesses injustice at school.
  • Dogs: Despite the fact she's a devoted cat-lover and works at a rescue shelter, something about dogs unsettles Leigh-Anne greatly, and she finds they tend to not like her either.  Something in the way they walk, the way their teeth bristle, the way they sniff the air, disturbs her and makes her nerves rattle and her skin crawl.
  • Religion: Leigh-Anne is greatly perturbed by the inadequacies of religion to cover the lapses of human nature.  Studying and reading as much as she does, she is no stranger to the historical shortcomings of various organized religions, and the violence and horrors they have inflicted and continue to inflict upon humanity.  She sees religious dogma and particularly the blind adherence of many of her peers in Green Gallows to church leaders and teachings to be exploitation of people in need of real answers and assistance for real problems in the real world.

Biography Leigh-Anne is the only child of Robert Yi Lee, a fairly recent transplant to Gallows Green from overseas, originally an immigrant from the Republic of China.  Her mother passed away when she was still just a baby, and she has only a few photographs and her father's reminisces to remember her by.  Robert works for the US Department of Energy, on oscure sensitive nuclear energy projects leftover from the Cold War.  She doesn't know much more than that about his work, but he's always been a warm and loving father to her and she's been the delight of his life.

Born in Virginia while Robert was working in DC, Leigh-Anne moved with her father from the US to the British Possessions of Akrotiri and Dhekelia, followed by Gibralter, and Montserrat while he was lent as a consultant to the British Ministry of Business, Energy and Industry.  Moving around frequently during throughout her primary and middle school years, Leigh-Anne gained a fairly cosmopolitan and worldly perspective at a young age.  Just about to start Jr High School when her family returned to the United States, Leigh-Anne quickly assimilated into the culture of Gallows Green, and quickly made friends amongst her peers, finding rapid acceptance in Gallows Green High School.

A model student at GG High, Leigh-Anne is the quintessential 'nice girl' and is well-liked by all her peers.  She's made a reputation for herself as a scholastic overachiever, talented musician, charismatic leader, and even goes out on Father-sanctioned bi-weekly dates with boys brave enough to ask her out.  She's always home by 10 PM, even though she's actually tried a few times to stay out later, but for some reason the boys always make sure to have her home by her Father's curfew.

Notable Relationships (Note: This can include non-game NPCs)

  • Father- Robert Yi Lee:  The stereotypical Asian Father who spoils his little girl.  Often absent due to work, Robert attempts to compensate for his limited time with his daughter by making sure she has the best possible opportunities and security he can provide.  He has a strong sense of ethics and family, doing his best to pass those traits on to Leigh-Anne.  His work for the US government is by necessity secretive, but in all other ways he is an honest and forthright man.
  • Leigh-Beth Marion:  Best friend and fellow fashion queen, Leigh-Beth is to Leigh-Anne, what Veronica Lodge is to Betty Cooper. Head Cheerleader, Minister's daughter, and Student Council President, Leigh-Beth is the conventionally beautiful, blonde bombshell, a Daughter of the American Revolution, and provides her personal knowledge of Instagram, Facebook, Amazon Prime, and everything pop culture to complement Leigh-Anne's quirky odd field of book knowledge.  The two are nearly inseparable and consider each other BFF's.
  • Gilliam Rolande: History teacher and Assistant Coach for GG high school marching band.  Gilliam is the good-natured and patient faculty member who mentors and looks after the promising scholars of GG High.  Every student's best friend, Mister Rolande offers counseling, tutoring, and open office hours every day of the week.  Leigh-Anne thinks of him as her favorite teacher and her personal coach when it comes to creating new band routines as the drum majorette for the band.
  • Reuben Grimes: The man who hooks her up with all the music.  Half of what Leigh-Anne knows about vintage music comes from Grimes.  She looks up to his knowledge of music theory and history with awe, often inspired to study hard to find some obscure band or composer, presenting it to Grimes with a flourish, only to find he already knew about them.  She's likely one of his most regular customers.

Meadow Hill
Meadow Hill

Basic Information

Full Name: Meadow Rain Hill
Nicknames: Em
Sex: Female
Age: 28
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Occupation: Storekeeper

Physical Description

Face Claim: Emmy Rossum
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 130 lbs.
Eye Color: Brown
Hair Color: Brown
Prominent Features or Distinguishing Marks: Largely because her mother encourages such forms of self-expression as tattoos and piercings, Em has steadfastly avoided getting either.  She sometimes wears glasses, however, and also has a vaguely heart-shaped birthmark on the inside of her right elbow.

General Physical Description: Again partly as a form of rebellion against her mother, she dresses in down to earth fashion, mainly jeans and blouses, with little jewelry or makeup.

Personality Description

Personality Traits: (Note: At least five traits)

  • Indecisive - Running her mother's shop is about the last thing Em wants to do, but in the absence of a better plan she's going along with it even though she hates herself for it.  But she still has hopes of doing better for herself someday soon.
  • Intelligent - Despite not knowing what she wants to do with her life, she is very smart and good at learning things, and has collected quite a bit of general knowledge about a wide range of subjects.
  • Perceptive - Her mother is inclined to call this spiritual awareness or a sixth sense, something Em scoffs at, but whatever the reason for it, she is inclined to notice details that others might miss and especially has a knack for sensing other people's moods.
  • Optimistic - Though certainly not inclined to act overly cheerful or urge others to do so, Em tends to be quietly hopeful about life and people in general, believing that most will do the right thing in the end.
  • Compassionate - Em will always help others when possible, with a particular soft spot for animals and children.

Likes:

  • Reading - Hey, everyone needs a good escape sometimes.
  • Painting / Sketching - She doesn't think she's any good yet and won't talk about her work or show it around, but she likes to seek out interesting spots around and outside of town to paint.
  • Cooking - She hasn't bothered with it much lately, but Em is quite a good cook and likes to hunt up interesting recipes.

Dislikes:

  • Her job - The customers are weird, the things for sale are weird (and overpriced), and she doesn't believe a single word of the weird things she has to talk about all day.
  • Gossip - Since her and Leah were often victims of unpleasant gossip when they were kids, Em is particularly displeased with anyone who likes to spread stories around.
  • Deep water - Em is borderline phobic about water deeper than waist-high.

Biography Between her mother's reputation around town, and the unlikely name she was saddled with, Meadow Rain Hill -- who always goes by Em -- knows what it's like to be the odd one out.  In Gallows Green, her mother Elizabeth was always considered a little strange.  After her husband, Bradley, packed up and moved out one day while his wife was out shopping with their two daughters, however, Elizabeth rapidly became stranger.  Her previous interest in all things occult turned into full-fledged obsession with everything from astrology to shakras to Zen Buddhism, and she legally changed her name to Star.

In a dramatic leap of faith, she quit her job as a real estate agent and opened up a shop called the Moonstone, specializing in New Age spirituality, selling books, crystals, statues, and a range of other items.  Genuinely believing herself to have paranormal abilities now, Star also offered Tarot and other forms of psychic readings.  Between that and selling some items of interest to tourists passing through, the shop managed to stay afloat, but for a time the family was in dire financial shape.  Em was ten at the time, her sister Azalea (who generally goes by Leah) barely three, and for several years it was a daily struggle to keep everyone fed and clothed.  It's partly because of this that Em grew to resent both her mother's obsessions and the shop that nearly bankrupted them.

Luckily, both daughters had some money in their college funds that their mother couldn't touch, and between that and a little luck both of them attended college out of the area.  Em never intended to go back, but she did after graduation, just to take a little break before getting a real job.  But that turned out to be less easy than she'd expected, and slowly she found herself "helping out" more and more at the shop. Then her mother, who'd always had troubles with rheumatoid arthritis, began to be less and less able to run the shop, relying more and more on Em.  Now Em wonders if she'll ever be able to get out of this town.

Notable Relationships

  • Elizabeth (Star) Hill - Mother, owner of The Moonstone
  • Azalea (Leah) Hill - Sister, currently attending college out of state
  • Bradley Hill - Father, whereabouts unknown

My Character: Joe Sargeant, the local drunk/Trailer Park Manager

Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

Joe Sargeant

Basic Information

Full Name: Joseph Sargeant
Nicknames: "The Kid" (from his former hockey career) or "The Trailer King"
Sex: Male
Age: 36
Ethnicity: White
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Occupation: Former Hockey Player, Current Trailer Park Manager

Physical Description

Face Claim: Mickey Rourke from Barfly(1987)
Height: 5'11
Weight: 230 lbs
Eye Color: Hazel
Hair Color: Light Brown
Prominent Features or Distinguishing Marks: Relatively bulky body and stout frame. Various small scars mark his face due to his rough upbringing, hockey career, and numerous drunken brawls.

General Physical Description:

Back in his heyday, Joe "The Kid" Sargeant was the very definition of physical fitness. As an up and coming hockey player - he had to be. These days, to say that Joe has let himself go would be putting it mildly. His daily diet of coffee and alcohol has not been kind to his physique. Only a decade ago, Joe was handsome, put together, and clean-shaven - but since the death of his wife, the clear signs of alcoholism have taken its toll on Joe's body.

The once youthful face that gave him his nickname is now pale and drooping. His eyes are constantly ringed with dark pits, while his face seemed to always be covered by a five o'clock shadow. His hair is grown out, and typically unkempt. At times, he will keep it tied back, but no matter what - it always looks layered with a greasy shine. His teeth have browned from his constant smoking and coffee consumption.

Joe's fashion sense seems to be non-existent. When his wife was alive, she did most of his shopping. Now, Joe still wears most of the old clothes that she had bought him. Over the years, they've seen a great deal of wear and tear, and it's not likely that Joe owns a shirt free of some stain. All vestige of personal ego or self-worth left Joe long ago, so unless prompted by special circumstances, Joe isn't likely to clean himself up. He can often be found wearing his old letterman's jacket

That being said, Joe's short rise within the Carolina Hurricanes wasn't by coincidence. The Trailer Park Manager is built like a brick shit house and can take the kind of beatings that would put a normal man in the hospital. Joe often tests his physical prowess at the random travelling bikers who stop in at the local watering hole. After a few stiff drinks, Joe might find himself going toe to toe with men twice his size (Sometimes he even wins). He drinks off his cuts and bruises in his trailer, and the next week might find himself back at it again.

Personality Description

Personality Traits: (Note: At least five traits)

  • Cynical: Joe's outlook of the world has hit rock bottom. Since the murder of his wife, and the downturn of his entire life - Joe sees life as living hell. He no longer trusts many people, doesn't believe in a loving God, or truth and justice. In all likelihood, he wouldn't last a day outside Gallows Green. Suicide was something that once loomed over him, but Joe has put that behind him now. He remains jaded, bitter, and resentful of the world and his place in it
  • Paranoid: Since the murder of his wife, Joe's mind has run wild. He thoroughly believes that his wife's killer is on the loose, and likely watching him. Though he has no idea who they could be, he feels that there may be a conspiracy going on. Is the government involved? What dark secrets of Gallows Green could be behind her murder? Joe trusts no-one, including himself.
  • Self-Hating: Joe blames himself for the death of his wife. In his mind, he should have been there, and he could have stopped it. Joe's rampant alcoholism and masochism is a sign of this wanton self-hatred. His self-harm comes in the way he treats his body the fights he finds himself in, and his increasingly negative outlook of the world.
  • Protective: Despite his negative qualities, Joe cares about the people under his care. The life of a Trailer Park Manager is far from glamorous, but he genuinely values the park's residents. He's the kind of guy who breaks up fights, installs ACs, mows lawns, helps old ladies, and runs errands. During the day (when he's sober), Joe always seems to have something to do. The recent dog killer has rattled him to the core. Is there something deeply sinister or evil at work? Joe is committed to stopping the killer, bringing him to justice, and restoring peace of mind to The Trailer Park
  • Diligent: The local police and the feds both failed to find his wife's killer, but Joe has never given up. At times, the Sherrif has even had to step in to put a stop to his sloppy sleuthing. Joe has his theories, though no conclusive evidence one way or another. He always has an ear out for any strange information he overhears and is committed to solving his wife's murderer - no matter the cost.

Likes:

  • Booze: Beer, whiskey, hooch - if it's got an alcohol percentage, Joe will drink it. A decade ago, when his wife was alive - she made sure he enjoyed it in moderation, but now - if he's got the time and the money to afford it, he'll drink it.
  • Coffee/Cigarettes: Joe always has a pack on him, and loves a stiff cup of coffee.
  • Certain People: Joe's outlook on life seems negative, but he keeps his friends close. Most of them have put their neck out for Joe on more than one occasion, and he hasn't forgotten about them. If you're in his good books, Joe has got your back.

Dislikes:

  • The Feds: The FBI let Joe down when they failed to find his wife's killer. From then on, Joe has held a deep resentment for them - if they ever have questions for him - Joe refuses to play their games.
  • Punk Ass Kids: Most people in Gallows Green show Joe a certain level of respect. As a hockey star, he put their town on the map, but the local punks find a great deal of joy in ridiculing him. To the local punks, he's a drunk joke and they are never shy in reminding him of that.
  • Sobriety: It's not only the rampant alcoholism that keeps Joe hitting the bottle. The pain of his old sports injury keeps him on edge when not dulled by alcohol. What's more - the dreams that plague him are always worse. The dreams of his dead wife and her murder leaves him wracked with guilt and sorrow. For Joe, his only relief lies at the bottom of the bottle.

Biography

Joe "The Kid" Sargeant was born and raised in Gallows Green. He grew up in a working-class household with an abusive father who worked at the local mill. He was the youngest of four siblings - who had all left town by the time he was a teen.

Joe found sanctuary at the local ice rink, where he joined the highschool Hockey Team where he lead the team as a natural forward. At the same time, he started a relationship with Laura, the girl who had grown up across the street from him, who had always owned a place in his heart. Eventually, Joe was scouted and was given a place with the Carolina Hurricanes. After a solid season, Joe returned to Gallows Green to marry  Laura.

Joe's hockey carrier continued for another two years until he was taken off the ice after a game in Pitsburg left him with a broken leg. As hard as he tried to get back into the game, Joe's heyday was over - and he returned to Gallows Green to start a life with Laura.

Things went well for a time, though Joe had a hard time holding down a job. Laura had a good job as an accountant - so things were alright. Joe would get over his failed career in time, and the two would start discussing starting a family together. Still, Joe's drinking was getting worse. At first, it was a medicine for the pain of his broken ego, but after a time, it brought out a darker side of Joe that no-one knew was there.

Ten years ago, Joe was coming home from the bar one night and when he got home, Laura was gone. The back door had been torn open, and there were obvious signs of a struggle. Joe called the police, and a search went out. No-one had seen a thing and the police were short on leads. Joe waited until he received a phone call. They had found Laura's severed head in the lake, wrapped in black garbage bags. Divers were called in, but nothing else was ever found. Joe was the chief suspect and brought in for questioning.  With no motive or evidence against him, Joe was let go - though the feds weren't shy about their doubts.

Over the next two years, Joe drank himself into oblivion with little care of whether he lived or died. He lost the house when the last of his money was gone and was destined to end up on the street or worse. Luckily, an old friend owned the local trailer Park and offered Joe a job as the new park manager. He would live rent-free and make a few bucks on the side. Joe was reluctant to take the job, though had little choice. Thankfully, he fit well into the position and has been working there for the past eight years.

Despite his sad past, Joe has become a kind of community figure. Everyone in town seems to know him to some extent and see him often drifting through town, buying cigarettes, or running errands for the park. Some might think he is a bit of a loser or even question his involvement in his wife's murder.

Notable Relationships (Note: This can include non-game NPCs)

  • Layla Covington: Joe and Layla don't have much of a relationship - but as lonely, tortured souls, they often find themselves exchanging nods at the local bar. Joe doesn't care about her money, though he is well below Layla's standards. Maybe she finds him easy enough to get along with and even buys him a drink now and then.
  • Burt Corley: Joe's old coach and owner of the Trailer Park - Burt is responsible for picking Joe up out of the dirt and giving him a steady job.
  • Ms. Harrington: The kind old lady that lives in The Trailer Park. Joe drives her to the doctor every week in his old pickup. She is very sick, and Joe worries for her health. Her little pomeranian has recently gone missing and Joe is dedicated to finding the culprit.
  • Gilliam Rolande: Gilliam and Joe grew up together, though barely talked. Maybe Joe even picked on old Gill back in the day, but since Joe saved him from an ass-kicking by a biker type (maybe getting his ass kicked in exchange), their relationship has bloomed. In many ways, he's a contrast to Joe completely - and always has time for light words over a cup of coffee at the local diner.

Additional Details
This is strictly in the theoretical, but Joe could be harbouring a dark secret of his own. Perhaps his drinking is to help with the strange dreams Joe sometimes has - the vivid dreams of his wife's death through the eyes of the killer. The dreams have returned in recent weeks, detailing the grizzly murders of the local dogs. Does Joe have some secret tie with the killer? Do they share a mental link? Or is some dark force taking direct control of Joe himself?

Vulnicura

Welp, you guys have given me a good deal of reading to do tonight! I've taken cursory glance at all of your characters thus far and I definitely like what I'm seeing. If anything needs to be changed or adjusted, I'll let you know.

Also, quick update: I spend a good portion of my work day doing a bit of world building, planning locations, coming up with NPCs, and working on the overall story. I should have a thread up in the Worldbuilding forum tomorrow or Wednesday (which will obviously be linked here).

Also, I think I can go ahead and safely transition this to a recruitment thread.

So far, so good. :) Now to start reading...

Vulnicura

I've read through all of the character sheets submitted thus far and I have no complaints whatsoever. Everyone sounds wonderful and I can't wait to play this out with all of you.

As promised, I've also started a thread in the World Building forum. As of right now, it only contains a short description of the town, the surrounding geography, and history. I... may have gone a bit overboard, but it's the little details, right?

Most of this probably isn't required reading and a good portion of it might actually be kind of boring. That being said, if you feel like contributing anything at all, feel free to let me know!

Emery Thompson

Basic Information:

Full Name: Emery "Jade" Thompson
Nicknames: Em| Jade| DJ Tom (Radio persona)
Sex: Female
Age: 25
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Occupation: Radio DJ | Avid conspiracy fanatic |Aspiring filmmaker

Physical Description

Face Claim: Pinterest Model
Height: 5'1
Weight: 118 lbs
Eye Color: Hazel
Hair Color: Naturally black | Vivid red and orange currently
Prominent Features or Distinguishing Marks: Star shaped birthmark on left rib, fiery red hair, quite pale and easy to spot, petite as all get out

General Physical Description:

Personality Description

Personality Traits:

  • Stubborn-If Emery is told she can't or shouldn't do something, chances are she's going to double down and do so without question; even if it's revealed she is wrong. For most of her life she has been told one thing or another and as a result has gained a bit of a complex in proving those around her wrong, especially when it comes to matters in which she is furiously passionate about. The old sexist ways of living in a small town only further reinforced the mindset of marching to the beat of her own drum, never one to go with the flow and as a result has made her into quite the character. One that shouldn't be tested less they feel her wrath.
  • Height envy-Napoleon complex at it's finest, Emery isn't afraid of throwing hands no matter the size, gender, age of her opponent, as this has given her a bit of a fiery temper as a result. The jokes and taunts that long followed her through her childhood makes her very sensitive in any sort of smart remarks towards her petite figure, enough that she can easily go 0 to 100 in a blink of an eye.
  • Passionately fiery-When it comes to subjects or areas that Emery is truly passionate about she tends to get tunnel vision, as not even the end of the world could stop her from achieving her goals.Turning a deaf ear to those who have repeatedly stated her hobbies and habits are no way to live Emery refuses to give up on her dreams, even if it does cost her a social life or relationships.
  • Smart Mouth-Em's bark is much worse than her actual bite but that doesn't stop the radio jockey from talking mad shit especially when it comes to those doubting her, her snark legendary as she always gets the last word in.
  • Hopeless romantic-Despite her rough exterior Emery does have a soft spot in her life, albeit a wistful sort of dream that in her current line of work doesn't seem likely. It doesn't stop the punk rocker from indulging in a few sappy movies or books in secrecy though, that perhaps one day she could find someone who could put up with her nonsense; but a girl can dream right?

Likes:

  • National Enquirer
  • Punk/rock/metal music (though plays requests when needed)
  • Podcasts/Vlogs/any sort of media to learn and teach those around her the truth
  • Cigarettes
  • Nighttime (when most things are said to occur)

Dislikes:

  • Being called short
  • Stale coffee
  • Internet lag
  • Loosing her lucky zippo
  • Tight places

Biography: Depending on who you ask Emery's history is a bit; complicated. This is in part thanks to Emery as on any day of the week if asked her story changes, whether it's because she does so purposely or actually isn't quite sure is the question. What is known is that her parents had moved to Green Gallows a year before Emery was born, her mother having gotten a mysterious sickness which left her husband now in care of their toddler and devastated. Many speculate it had been Lila's death that threw Thomas into the obscurity of conspiracy theories and all that of the unexplained as a means of coping, hard wiring Emery to follow suit as he included his child into his obsession.  With Thomas's death within the recent five years Emery has similarly followed in her father's footsteps in coping rather than deal with the truth.

So the rest is something that even Emery has to piece together, and any who have the patience to actually sift through the crazy stories.

Notable Relationships: (always up for more)

  • Thomas Thompson-Emery's father who passed away about five years back, leaving his daughter his radio station slot as well as the bug for all things conspiracy.Having taught Em all that he knew in the radio business it had been his dream to have his daughter fulfill his last wishes in spreading the truth of the world, in their own slightly crazy sort of way, as it is something Emery is immensely proud of.
  • Lila Thompson-Emery's mother whom passed away when Em was only three years old, she doesn't have much memories of her mom although does have a photo album and has pieced together some things.

Annnd another update. Locations are pretty much done, save for pictures. I'll be adding geographical landmarks tonight (because I'm a crazy person who goes full steam ahead when it comes to planning).

Work on NPCs, supernatural entities, and a few logistical concerns begins tomorrow. As of right now, I'm hoping that will all be done by the weekend and we can start things off.

Speaking of starting things off, I have a general idea for how things will start, but I'd love to have some feedback from those of you who have joined so far. As of right now, my general plan is to simply let everyone loose in the world to explore, get to know their characters, and get a feel for things. The overarching story will begin soon after with an event on the night of a local holiday, The Midnight March. If anyone has any ideas or plotlines they would like to incorporate, let me know!

MingMing

I advise instead of sandboxing everyone free, you start with an event that everyone shows up attending, focus upon initial interactions between the PCs.  Otherwise posts will just meander and stagnate and interest will die without direction.  Games require initial focus to begin with, the players require content to participate, they cannot *be* the content itself... not to begin with.

That's a good point. Most tabletop campaigns I've ran in the past have been almost entirely sandbox/improvisation, so falling back on that is what I'm comfortable with... but I do have a general idea for the first 'event' and there really isn't much of a reason to delay it, especially since it will likely add a bit more focus in the beginning.

Also, update. NPCs and locations are done. I have (most) things planned save for a few minor details. Threads for the actual game will likely go up tonight/tomorrow.

Yeah, really good stuff, man. I cant wait to talk to David Byrne.

I don't mind the free flow/improv element - but I get that some people might need a little more impetus/direction. It might get a little confusing playing scenes that some characters might not he in - but with the NPC list you've provided- I think it would be cool if everyone played a little of everything, if you follow me...

Thanks guys! I've put a lot of thought into it. I'm super excited to see how The Hating Tree gets implemented into things. And I've always thought David Byrne should have played some sort of role in Twin Peaks, so I guess his inclusion is just my way of of making it actually happen. :P

Ideally, and if this all actually works out, I'd like for the game to take on a life of its own with everyone chasing their own plotlines, creating people and places to interact with, and building something that I think could be very special.Basically, I think it's inevitable that things will move towards a more freeform style as we delve deeper into Gallows Green and I get the hang of running this thing, but Ming and you both make an excellent point - as of right now, with this thing in its infancy, a bit more direction and less sandboxing might be for the best.

As for NPCs, everyone is welcome to play and introduce (almost) any NPC in whatever way they like. That being said, NPCs aren't mandatory at all. They're just there to add a bit more flavor and life to the game.

Oh. PS: An OOC Thread (including information for the start/first event) and a thread for character sheets will be up in just a bit. Since my time is a bit limited today, the first IC thread probably won't be up until morning. I'll get links posted here when they're ready. :)

Vulnicura

The Character Sheets and OOC threads are both up! More to be added to OOC tomorrow as well as our first IC thread. Go post your characters and talk amongst yourselves. I have a dinner I have to get to that I'm already running late for, so I doubt I'll be around much tonight.

Also, snap decision: put the game in Extreme instead. I don't anticipate (or particularly want) any super extreme kinks in the game, but given the horror genre and the potential for violence/gore, better safe than sorry.

Vulnicura

OOC thread has been updated with rules and details of our first IC thread.

Thread will be up in an hour or two after I get a bit more coffee in me. :P

Vonandi

Hello.

I've been working on and off on a deputy sheriff character but it seems the spots have been taken by NPCs. Is making that sort of character still possible or would it be better to change it?

Hey there! A spot as a deputy is still definitely available, though I'd rather save Sheriff and Chief Deputy for NPCs (for now at least). That being said, if you have any ideas that would conflict with the NPCs, feel free to PM me and let me know. :) With nobody being introduced yet, there's definitely time to remove NPCs to make way for a PC.

Recruitment thread updated to include a bit more information, such as rules and what we need.

As of right now, we could definitely use a few more characters to round out the cast. As always, feel free to reach out to me. :)

Very interested in this idea, but I'm unsure what roles you're still looking to fill? Anything in particular?

Hey! I'm glad you're interested! Pretty much any role that would make sense within the scope of a small town. I don't have any specific roles in mind. If you'd like, I'd be happy to PM you and bounce some ideas around. :)

Biography
Born and raised in the outskirts of Gallows Green, her Father worked in the town mine while her mother stayed at home. It's a time in her life she can barely remember - that is, the time before her father's accident. When she was twelve years old a section of mine collapsed and took her father with it. He lived, but he lost his leg, his right eye and most of the fingers on his left hand. He was compensated  for the accident but he was never the same afterwards. He began to grow more and more bitter. His leg never healed correctly and constantly bothered him. After a while be began to get physically and verbally abusive, that is when ever he wasn't on the nod in front of the TV off his pain killers. Then one day he left without warning, his plate still set and his dinner half eaten, as if he had rushed to leave. They found him dead a mile down the road, though no cause of death could be determined it was ruled as heart failure.
A year later her mother remarried, and though it took a long time Madeleine grew to see her step dad as her real father. She worked as a waitress for a while but as soon as she was old enough and with her step father's encouragement she started the process of becoming an officer of the law, in hopes she could prevent what Happened to her from happening to anyone else.

Notable Relationships (Note: This can include non-game NPCs)

  • Other officers
She has a decent relationship with most of the people she works with but rarely spends any time with them outside work.
  • Her Mother and step-father
Additional Details After over a decade on the force she's only had to discharge her firearm once, but that was all it took. It's something no one seems to like to talk about, Madeleine least of all.

Vulnicura

Hey Vonandi! I feel like Madeleine would be a great fit. Feel free to post your character in the Character Sheets thread and I'll get a PM out to you after i get off work with a few things you should know.

Hey :) I don't usually do modern-day RP but this sounds interesting. I haven't watched Twin Peaks or Stranger Things, but if it's a bit in the same vein as the early seasons of Supernatural or Grimm that could work for me.

Hey there! I've actually never watched Supernatural or Grimm, so I can't compare those. XD I can say, as far as the supernatural elements of the game goes, that there isn't much in the way out werewolves or vampires and the like. It's leans further towards surreal and cosmic horror, if that makes sense.

Here goes :

Name: Elbert Buckner
Gender: Male
Age: 54
Ethinicity: Causasian
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Occupation: Novelist

Physical Description:
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Brown with gray
Facial Hair : Trimmed; salt and pepper
Height: 5'10
Body Build: slightly overweight
Additional Physical Notes:

A Middle-aged man, Elbert has salt and pepper hair and beard and a face that is visibly in progress of showing signs of age. Despite this, a certain youthful gaze can still be found in his baggy eyes.

Elbert dresses cleanly and soberly but his clothes are often outdated, making him stick out like a sore thumb in glamorous settings. He wears small, square glasses and is often seen with a cotton bucket hat on when sitting outside at the Cafe.

Personality:

Elbert was an adventurous and imaginative man in his youth and rarely turned down an opportunity to explore a new place or a new idea. The young novelist never seemed to run out of energy or inspiration.

Recently, he seems to have lost his fire. His last published book was years ago and his last bestseller years before that. Unable to find inspiration, Elbert lives comfortably off the royalties of his previous successes in semi-retirement and seems to spend most of his days brooding or hanging out at the The Timely Newsstand and Cafe, reading a newpaper, a book, or writing into a burgundy hardcover notebook.

Despite his apparent lack of motivation and jaded demeanor, Elbert longs for a new adventure, literary or otherwise.

Likes:

  • Black "spiked" coffee
  • Genre fiction
  • Taking walks
  • Younger and/or smart women
  • Symphonic music

Dislikes:

  • Industry beer
  • Literary fiction
  • Driving
  • Literary critics
  • Electronic music

History:

Elbert was born and raised in Toronto from a family of teachers. As such, education was highly important in his family and he was encouraged to do well in school and later to pursue a higher education, which be did, obtaining a Master's degree in English literature and a degree in journalism. Enjoying quick success from a romantic adventure series titled "High heels and Fedoras”, Elbert became famous and wealthy at a relatively young age.

Over the next two decades, Elbert would publish dozens of novels and novellas in a variety of genres, win a number of prizes and cash in on a few movie deals, whether or not they ever got produced. At age 38, he would meet who he thought was the love of his life, a much younger woman by the name of Emily Morgan. Initially a fan of the writer, she would meet her idol at a Fantasy convention and the two would begin dating, getting married mere months later.

The newlyweds spent the next few years travelling around the world and enjoying a lavish lifestyle. Unfortunately, their bliss would be short-lived, as as Elbert’s inspiration began to dry out, his mood started to sour and their relationship began to degraded. Eventually, they split, and Elbert was stuck with a very costly divorce settlement that prompted him to sell most of his properties, including his Manhattan penthouse. Shortly thereafter, the writer moved to Gallows Green in hope of escaping from the glamorous life of NYC, the incessant interview requests, and perhaps find some inspiration and tranquility in this remote area of North Carolina.

Relationships:
Ex-wife: Emily Morgan
Mother: Daisy Buckner (nee Price)
Father: Graeme Buckner

Face Claim:

Bill Pullman

Hey! I do have someone else interested in being a waitress at The Mothlight, BUT there's plenty of room for waitresses in town as long as the characters are different enough. :) I haven't heard from the other person in a few days, though. Just wanted to give you the heads up!

Hey everyone!

We're getting pretty close to capacity for the time being. We could definitely use a few more male characters to round things out about, if anyone is interested. Trans characters are welcome as well. I'll likely be very selective with female characters for the rest of the current storyline.

Thanks for reading. :)

Olivia Burke

Basic Information

Full Name: Olivia Marianne Burke
Nicknames: Liv, Livvie, Olive
Sex: Female
Age:22
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Sexual Orientation: Pansexual
Occupation: Waitress, and . . . waitress

Physical Description

Face Claim: Lucy Hale
Height: 5’8”
Weight: 135
Eye Color: Hazel
Hair Color: Dark brown
Prominent Features or Distinguishing Marks: Three tattoos – a spider on the back of her neck, a triple spiral on her left ankle, and the alchemical symbols for fire, water, air, and earth on the small of her back. A 2” long scar on her right knee.

General Physical Description: Olivia is average height, with dark brown hair in a short bob. She is slender, and typically dresses to hide her perceived lack of curves. Her clothes, when she isn’t working, tend to have geometric patterns in neutral colors, though she does occasionally throw everyone for a loop and wear a color.

She looks delicate, but her waitressing gives her a bit more muscle than it looks like she has. Her makeup is always right, her nails always done, enough to look pretty and get tips, not enough to make the girls whose boyfriends bring them to the Empress think she’s out to take them.

She moves with confident assurance, independent aloofness, and casual grace. She smiles at everyone she sees, because most of them are customers. Some of them get the real smile.

Personality Description

Personality Traits: (Note: At least five traits)

  • Personable. Olivia is a generally friendly and outgoing person. She likes people, in general, most of the time.
  • Gentle. The consensus of the town is that Olivia likely wouldn’t harm a fly.
  • Inquisitive. If the town knew how many of their secrets she’s been privy to, they’d be horrified. She listens, always, and will ask questions to get people chatting in the direction to learn something new.
  • Romantic. She likes watching young people on dates, and encouraging the romance as much as she can. She hasn’t yet responded favorably to any approaches made to her, but maybe they haven’t made the right pitch.
  • Cautious. Olivia takes care. It’s what makes her a good waitress. She’s learned hard lessons about being cautious, being careful. She doesn’t like the idea of losing something important because she let her guard down.

Likes:

  • Books and reading
  • New Age/Pagan things (she shops at The Moonstone often)
  • Hiking

Dislikes:

  • Centipedes
  • Liars
  • Mushrooms
  • People who criticize single parents

Biography
Olivia was supposed to make it out. She was smart, determined, and her parents, Rita and Will, were ready to say a bittersweet farewell to their only child at the end of her senior year when she would go off to Yale.

But halfway through her senior year of high school, a boy happened. Even now, Rita and Will won’t even say his name, they just call him ‘that bastard’. Olivia, when she talks about him (and that isn’t often) calls him ‘Coop’. The relationship didn’t last long, but it was long enough for Olivia to “get into trouble”, as her parents put it.

She didn’t get to graduate. They sent her away – how 1940s can you get? – for nine months, and when she returned, she no longer wanted to live with them. Her parents didn’t understand, how could they? They sent her away, made her give up her baby, and thought she would want to be around them? She spent two nights at home, then booked a room at the Netherland Inn until she could afford a place of her own.

She works two waitressing jobs: Morning at the Mothlight Diner, evenings at the Painted Empress. She’s saving her money to get out again, maybe to try and find her child again. All she knows is that the baby was a girl, and was adopted by a family within the state. She’s determined to find out, and to bring the child home with her.

Notable Relationships (Note: This can include non-game NPCs)

  • Rita Burke – Mother. They don’t talk much, and when they do it often turns into an argument. Lives near the edge of town with Olivia’s father.
  • Will Burke – Father. Teaches algebra at the high school. Tries to stay out the fights between wife and daughter, but actually fully supports Rita’s ideas about what his little Livvie should do.
  • Martha Newton – Boss. Gave Olivia the first of her two waitressing jobs in Gallows Green. Olivia thinks Martha is the kindest, sweetest person ever, and has been trying to drop hints that she would like to take over the diner when Martha decides to retire.
  • Unknown child. Olivia gave birth to a baby girl about 5 years ago, and has been trying to get together the cash to investigate where her child is. She was forced to give the girl up for adoption, and wants to make it right.

Additional Details (Note: Feel free to put whatever you like here. Details not covered by the sheet, additional pictures, you name it.)

Hi there, I sent a message about this character fitting into the story. I just finished him, so I thought I would go ahead and submit him for potential approval.
The semi-unknown stranger, whose car breaks down stranding him in town the night of the parade...

Isaac Dominguez

Basic Information

Full Name: Isaac Dominguez
Nicknames: Maestro Muertos
Sex: Male
Age: 36
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Sexual Orientation: Fluid
Occupation: B-List Horror Film Maker

Physical Description

Face Claim: Marlon Teixeira
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 165lbs
Eye Color: Dark Brown
Hair Color: Chestnut
Prominent Features or Distinguishing Marks: Well known by his fans for a general slacker fashion, and wild, unkempt hair.

General Physical Description:
Generally known to have an eclectic sense of fashion that leans toward comfortable and breathable over dressy or stylish. He will often be seen in button up short sleeve shirts, with noticeably nothing underneath, or just a plain jacket.  Shoes are also, often, not essential.

Personality Description

Personality Traits: (Note: At least five traits)

  • Dreamer: Whether it's fantasies of grandeur for himself, or his career. Or nightmares of the monsters that he conjures up for his movies, Isaac always has his head in the clouds and rarely remains present on Earth, unless something is really holding his attention.  This can be a real struggle for his crew, actors, even production studios, but it's just part of what makes his style so uniquely his.
  • Silver Tongue: When he is present, he does manage to have one skill useful for keeping him in the horror movie business: the art of sweet talk. Isaac is a talker and a charmer, and when he is passionate about something it's hard for people to turn him down. That's how "The Son of Chupacabra 2" got made.
  • ADD: With a notoriously short attention span and a tendency toward getting distracted at the flip of a coin, everyone who has worked with Isaac know that talking business with him is very hit or miss. Really anything, beyond when he's working on a movie, is a shot in the dark whether you'll have his full, undivided attention, or just 40-60%
  • Occult Knowledge: When you're in the business of making horror movies you end up taking with you a rather vast knowledge of what most people consider "dark", "creepy", and "mysterious". His knowledge of such things even goes beyond the, mostly untrue, scary stories. His scary movie knowledge is also pretty extensive.
  • Secrets: One of the perks of not being one of the A-list celebrities, with the paparazzi always kicking down your door, is that people don't really start digging into your past. Nobody asks Isaac who his parents are, what city in Mexico he was born, or if it even was Mexico. His interviews generally stay concentrated around what blood curdling monster he would feature in his next gore fest.

Likes:

  • Early mornings, and late nights
  • Movies
  • Long, deep conversations about nothing

Dislikes:

  • Waste: Food, time, money, resources
  • Extreme conservatism, not to get political but some beliefs rub him the wrong way
  • Taking things too seriously. Sometimes you just gotta stop and watch a horror flick

Biography
'Son of El Chupacabra' 'Frankenstein's Brain' 'The Dogs of Chernobyl' and of course 'Son of Chupacabra 2: Family Reunion'...
For any cult horror movie fanatic worth their salt, these titles would be… somewhere near the middle of the list of must see films, for any movie night focused around films so terrible you can't help but love them. From rubber costumes that you can see the zipper on if you pause at just the right moment, to way too much fake blood, and leading ladies that must have passed the Bram Stoker's school of shrieking women. These films check all the boxes of what any cult snob would want in their collection of movies that their friends definitely had never seen before, and they all, along with many others, were made by the self appointed Maestro Muertos, Isaac Dominguez.

The latin filmmaker, who fancies himself the next Benicio del Toro (even though he is barely an Eli Roth), has existed on the fringes of Hollywood since he was barely twenty. Starting out as an extra in low budget horror movies, his most notable appearance being thirty seconds as "Pizza Boy", in 'Zombie Pool-Party from Hell', Isaac had all the tenacity, gumption, and drive to start pumping out his own low budget schlock for a no name production company, by the time he was twenty five. But what set Isaac's work apart from so many others, was an undeniable passion, even love, for the movies he made. Despite all the cheesy effects, low budget equipment and editing, and extremely niche fan base, the work of Maestro Muertos always had a way of standing out to those who cared enough to watch past the boom mic showing up in the frame.

Not much is known about Isaac Dominguez beyond his life in Hollywood. It is generally believed that he grew up somewhere in Mexico and immigrated to America in order to get into the movie industry. His list of friends if barely known to branch out past his manager and the recurring members of his cast and crew. He is rarely seen going out with anything that could be considered a significant other, but when you're slamming out 2 to 3 straight to dvd movies a year, there's very little time to spend in the relationship department. Most of his romantic encounters amount to super fans at the various conventions and film festivals he attends, and the occasional actress who is very grateful for her first ever movie roll…
...Purely a wrap-party hookup scenario. None of that "casting couch" stuff.

Most of his time that isn't spent making movies, is spent promoting them at the various forums that appreciate his works. Primarily horror cons, and fright fests. The sorts of places true horror fans go to see the stuff that mainstream Hollywood hasn't spoiled with insane money and vapid celebrities. These are the places where Isaac can feel truly appreciated for his mastery of the movie monsters. Before he goes back to renting cheap motels for single nights of shooting, then driving his car across the country to another convention.

Notable Relationships (Note: This can include non-game NPCs)

  • Ricky Alvarez - Isaac's long time manager and best friend. Located back in LA, will primarily exist over phone calls.
