The biggest news from over here - Polish teachers go on country-wide strike!
https://www.euronews.com/2019/04/08/polish-teachers-strike-over-pay-after-talks-with-government-failIt seems that at least 50% of all teachers from public schools joined the strike - and, if the unions are to be believed, the number is closer to 80%. This is a big crisis, especially as graduation exams for elementary and / or middle schools are to start on Wednesday. If the teachers keep on striking, there won't be enough personnel to conduct these exams...
Personally? I fully support this strike. The teachers' wages are notoriously low - which makes the living hard for existing teachers and, also, decreases the number of young people willing to take on such a job. If the government doesn't do something, we might end with no teaching cadre in a not-too-far future...
Also, the government really did bring this strike on themselves. The teachers have been voicing their requests for wage increase for at least a year - and the government kept saying that there's no money in the budget for such raises. But then, not too long ago, the government realized it might be losing some of its support... so they came up with a plan for enormous public spendings. Spendings much higher than what's needed to give the teachers raises they asked for. So, apparently, the government was willing to find the money... just not for the teachers. No wonder the teachers blew a fuse and went on strike...
