Anti vax parents fined by NY court for failing to vaccinate. And about time too. The fact that we have a massive measels outbreak in this day and age is rather scary. We have the tools to prevent it but idiots think they know better than the medical community.

Unfortunately, I don't believe fines will do enough. Fines won't change religious beliefs, like some anti-vaxers hold on to (and have a Constitutionally-protected right to do so). Fines would be difficult to enforce and collect upon. Who will do that? Our police officers? And what of the poor? How will they pay for a $2,000 fine?

My solution is to quarantine the afflicted and the family members that insist upon anti-vaccinations. Does it sound like an old penal colony or leper community? Yup. That's exactly what I would suggest. You have the freedom to believe and practice your life the way you wish, but if your actions (or lack of actions) endanger other law-abiding citizens, then you must be segregated.  Nasty words, I know. Extreme? Perhaps. But 600 deaths (and growing!) require extreme responses.

I personally think that if someone dies from a disease because an idiot didn't vaccinate their children, then the parents of the child(ren) should be held accountable. Second-degree homicide.  I also think it should be mandatory for children to be vaccinated - if a parent refuses, the child should be removed from the parents care for neglect and abuse.  I do not think there should be any exceptions. Period.  We know that we need a certain percentage to maintain herd immunity, so why are we allowing people to opt out?  You are just giving the idiots loopholes to use to their advantage.

Mandatory vaccinations. Full stop.

What you're describing is not "second-degree homicide" because technically speaking there's no such thing as "second-degree homicide." I think the phrase you're looking for is 'involuntary manslaughter' which is (among other things) the unintentional killing of another person through an act of negligence that could reasonably be foreseen to result in death. In the state where I live, involuntary manslaughter 'only' carries with it a 51-64 month prison sentence, and I think you intend the penalties for this sort of homicide to be harsher in your proposal.

Second-degree murder, on the other hand, carries with it a minimum sentence of 12 years, which feels more in line with what you're suggesting. However, the law does not allow for treating this type of death as murder because murder requires the specific intent to kill the other person.

Maybe criminally negligent homicide?

"Under New York Penal Law Section 125.10, an individual can be charged with criminally negligent homicide if they acted in a reckless manner or failed to act in a responsible manner resulting in the death of another person."

Such as texting while driving. Of course I don't think it's plausible, but...

Criminally negligent homicide is what New York calls the same act of involuntary manslaughter I referenced earlier. In NY, criminally negligent homicide "only" carries with it the possibility of up to 48 months in prison.

Yeah its funny, until your kid or someone who cant get themselves vaccinated catches measles, mumps, rubella, or worse, and every time they breathe it feels like literal agony. Or they catch something like Chickenpox which then guarantees that when they are older they get the Shingles and suffer in old age for something that someone else did. There are people in 3rd world countries who would kill to get vaccines as easily as we can. And we kill our own children in order to not vaccinate them.

Yuk it up. I have a piss poor immune system that makes me susceptible to things that others can fight off.  I have no desire to get something that could have been avoided if assholes had vaccinated their kids as they should have.  Normally I would agree with the government staying out of our lives for the most part - but when you have idiots who think they know more than the doctors and refusing to vaccinate their kids which puts those of us with compromised immune systems/immature immune systems at risk, I think the government needs to step in and make it mandatory.  It concerns the whole safety of the populace and since we can't trust that people will do what is right and healthy, we need someone to make sure they do what is right and healthy.

Usually comedians are not a great source of knowledge on politics, medicine, or philosophy. Even ones people tend to like and find more credible can be quite misleading and inaccurate(Looking at you everyone who has ever been a part of the Daily Show).

QuoteThe Food and Drug Administration warned the public not to attend a “miracle cure” event being thrown by group using the name Genesis II Church of Health and Healing in Leavenworth, Washington on Saturday, noting their supposed medical marvel is a highly toxic substance.

Per the Guardian, the FDA warned that the “miracle mineral solution or supplement” is in fact chlorine dioxide, a bleach used in industrial textile production and water treatment. (Screenshots of the Genesis II website advertise the substance as generated from a mixture of “hydrochloic acid” [sic] and sodium chlorite, which is associated with acute renal failure.)

I.. what?! How is it fucking legal to pretend this is a cure. It is really dangerous. So they are saying I can feed people poison as long as I pretend it is a religious thing and a cure?! Really?????!!!!! WTF!! There should be armed cops busting down the door dragging these people to jail, do not pass go, do not collect any fucking money.

It's the USA, you can kind of get away with a lot as long as you say it's a religious belief and you're Christian. Denying Jewish foster parents on basis of them being Jewish? That's been recently allowed. Because the foster agency was Christian. Same for gay parents, same for serving people(Whether based on their religion, sexuality, gender, etc).

I thought I'd heard of this before:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracle_Mineral_Supplement  Various proponents have had legal rulings handed down to them over it, including a 4.25 year prison sentence in one case (go down to 'judgements'.)

It's actually more than just two churches.

At least eight blasts were reported. Three churches in Negombo, Batticaloa and Colombo's Kochchikade district were targeted during Easter services.

The Shangri-La, Kingsbury, Cinnamon Grand and a fourth hotel, all in Colombo, were also hit.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-48001720

Kinda strange is, that they attacked the churches as Christians are the littlest faith group in Sri Lanka.
So far they don't know who is behind it.

QuoteThe US is threatening to veto a United Nations resolution on combatting the use of rape as a weapon of war because of its language on reproductive and sexual health, according to a senior UN official and European diplomats.

QuoteIn recent months, the Trump administration has taken a hard line, refusing to agree to any UN documents that refer to sexual or reproductive health, on grounds that such language implies support for abortions. It has also opposed the use of the word “gender”, seeing it as a cover for liberal promotion of transgender rights.

Beorning

Last week in Poland, on Good Friday, some people in the small town of Pruchnik decided to revive the disturbing tradition of "beating up Judas":

https://www.timesofisrael.com/polish-crowd-beats-burns-judas-effigy-featuring-anti-semitic-tropes/

I admit I'm disgusted by this - and, moreso, by the amount of right-wing public figures stepping up to *defend* this situation. They claim this is all just an innocent tradition related to Easter celebrations, that it's purely religious and doesn't have any antisemitic connotations... Some of this voices of support are quite disturbing themselves: for instance, one PiS senator actually referred to one Polish-Jewish journalist (who criticised the situation rather harshly) with comments in the vein of "He should mind his own business" (meaning, as a Jew, he shouldn't criticise Catholic "traditions") and "When he converts to Catholicism, he'll understand such rituals". Ugh.

In any case... I call bullshit. The whole situation had clear antisemitic undertones - the effigy of Judas was made to look like a modern Jew, and some onlookers invited the children to beat up the effigy as a punishment for "reparations" (meaning, the money Jewish societies supposedly want from Poland as compensations for the possessions lost during WW2). Also, the people saying that this is a Catholic religious tradition are lying through their teeth, as the Catholic Church has clearly condemned it years ago. So, the furious defense of this situation from our right-wing journalists and politicians is just... sickening.

Are you like me and have a few extra kilos? (or in my case.. ok more than a few perhaps) And are you worried about not getting that tummy for the summer? fear not surgery is the answer!

QuoteResearchers at the University of Miami’s Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine have developed a new plastic surgery technique called abdominal etching that can reshape belly fat to make you look like you spend all your time at the gym.

Thats right! Lets shape that fat into making it look like you hit the gym!

Forks for us ladies too. What you say? Some problems? bah.

QuoteBut if you haven’t stepped foot in a gym in your life, and can’t imagine the torture of performing even a single sit-up, this procedure is not going to turn you into a fitness model overnight. The study included 50 patients in total (26 men and 24 women averaging 26 years of age) who were already in excellent shape thanks to healthy diets and regular exercise but struggled with shedding unwanted deposits of belly fat.

oh.. darn. ^^
