What are the functions of the offhand orb and grimoire?

A grimoire is a tome, for thsoe that need to write down spells, or simply a mystical journal to store notes about arcane crafts.. An Orb can act like a focus, a scrying tool, etc.

So certainly not a defensive combat device.  Gotcha.  That was where my confusion came from.

Well the Orb could potentially be. It really depends on how you use it. You are welcome to suggest an alternate offhand, jsut describe what it does entirely ok?

Well, I'm looking at a two handed weapons (crossbow) so an off handed item is going to have to be something small, like a ring or bracelet.

I'll have to reread Goethe to see if Faust had a trinket....

Oh no that's entirely fine! If  your character has a two handed, then just ignore the offhand.

Rings and bracelets are considered accessories.

Name – Haruka Yuuki

Class – Elemental Magic, Healing, Empathetic Magic

Occupation: Student, Working to become a Powerful Mage

Backstory/History - The craft of magic was passed down from generation to generation within the Yuuki family, each of the eldest children taking up the challenge to learn the arts to the best of their ability, and to make an example of their prowess in elemental and manipulative magic. Over the years, many children tried and succeeded, becoming staples and well known figures within the magical world, and as a result, the Yuuki Family of Japan had become one of the more well known magical families within the world, due to their prowess in magical ability. Each child would be given the childhood they would be proud of, filled with chances to use their gifts, to lead a life of proper teaching and training, to become the greatest in their line, to become the shining example for the world to see.

However, not all agreed with the Yuuki's position within the magical world within Asia, and many families began to resent them for their extreme fortune. One particular family took to underhanded tactics to bring the family down, and on the year that a deal with the Yuuki's and another magical family was broken by the latter, they took to drastic measures and used magic on the family unsuspectingly, casting a dark curse within the family that would last them their next generation; their next heir would be impaired, therefore unable to fully grasp and train their magical abilities to the families wishes.

This is where within a year later, Haruka Yuuki was born; fully and irreversibly deaf, due to the curse inflicted on her family.

Life for Haruka...was indeed hard, knowing from a young age that her family was ill-fated to have what some would call a 'broken child', but she tried to not let it get to her as a child. Having a impaired sense of the world, she was forced to be homeschooled and taught sign language in order to communicate, all while trying her hardest. to learn the magic that her family wished of her. More attune with healing and elemental magics, she would do small gestures for her family to show she was improving; healing small cuts, growing a small garden with her magical abilities alone, whatever she could. Her father, in particular, was not as impressed as he would have been, still wavering on the fact that she was still not fully able to grasp the world like they could. Her brother was soon born after her, a year later, and was chosen to take the place of head child to be groomed rather then she, feeling that they would be a much more compatible candidate.

Haruka was heartbroken, but did her best not to show it, to show her weakness which already crippled her.

Each day, every hour of the day, she trained. She got better, she showed her skills when she could, even whether family were more preoccupied with her brother. She would prove herself, to her family, and one day, when she turned the age of 18, she found a letter by her door. Having not seen anyone nearby her moments before, and addressed to her no less, she found that she was invited to the Outer Realms University to become a better Magic user. Surprised and overjoyed, she showed her family the news, too which her mother was proud to find; her father, on the other hand, was less then excited, but congratulated her none the less. With the preparations in place, and her seat secured at the school, Haruka was given permission and packed her bags to be taken to the school, curious as to what the school would teach her.

Species Special abilities:

Harsh Training: Hardened and trained to use her abilities and to not waver from a fight, Haruka has become someone capable of battle, even if she does not wish it.

Magical Lineage: Passed down the line from generation to generation, magical abilities within the Yuuki family are strong. Even if she cannot hear, that doesn't mean that Haruka doesn't know how to use her magic properly.

Herb and Potion Making: Concoctions of herbs and plants can be used for many things, and Haruka has a knack for it. From things such as strength enhancing, healing, and invisibility, Haruka can create them.

Physical Appearance – With caramel brown eyes and long, matching colored hair, Haruka stands at about 5'1, with a lean and fit body. Trained and pushed to the limit through her abilities, Haruka is someone that looks like an ordinary young woman, but holds magical abilities that surpasses any regular. human.

Clothes – Wears form fitting to rather loose clothing, usually consisting of small dresses or blouses and skirts with a small cardigan to wear over. She has other outfits she brought with her in case of a certain occasion.

Personality -  A rather kind and gentle woman, Haruka is someone that doesn't tend to get into fights and pick on others so easily just because of their magical ability. Unlike. some of the members of he family, like her father, who use their abilities to mock others and to show that they are much more becoming of a high ranking mage then others, Haruka tends to be more on the gentler and kind side, showing others that just because you may not have the right skills, doesn't mean you can't improve. As someone who has had to struggle her entire life by pleasing someone, she knows that harshness and cruel reality of the world and the expectations put on some of the other children of mage families. Some may not work the same as others, but what she's had to endure has told her more then enough.

Despite the harshness from family and the community around her, Haruka still strives to endue such hardships, and is someone that others can go to to talk to and simply be listened to, despite her own lack of hearing. Someone reliable and truthful, she won't shy away from telling others the truth when they need hear it, placing Haruka as a trusted friend to others in need. She isn't just a soft woman however, her skills are on par with some of the better students, it just takes time and practice to get everything down, however.


Combat Section

Weapon(s)/Equipment - Staff: Passed down from the woman of her family, Haruka takes on a holy staff that has. been through countless trials and magical rituals in her family. Sturdy and strong with magical ability, Haruka takes it with her when performing high level spells.

Kimono: Another heirloom passed down from generation to generation, is the Maiden's Tunic, an outfit bestowed onto the family by a divine force, or so the legend has been heard. With fine fabric and intricate patterns, the outfit has been given to Haruka to use on her journey at the school.

Abilities - Empathetic Healing Magic: A rather strange ability that Haruka's family had found when she was much younger, the daughter has an ability that is somewhat akin to hearing, but on a more personal and deep level. By having a connection to another, and by focusing her mind and magic on the person and their feelings, she can search an individuals mind for their troubles and doubts, and understand them on a deeper level. People have claimed that her magic helps ease their pain and doubts, and has become a rather relieving tool for others when they have no one left to turn to.

Skills - Cooking: It may sound rather unimportant in the grand scheme of things, but Haruka is a rather excellent cook. Having a knack for tasting rather then hearing, she can create intricate and delicious dishes for herself and others to enjoy!

Gradening: Another skill that's useful both for cooking and magic, Haruka finds herself;f a natural Gardner for ingredients for potions and dishes. Carefully angle to pick out the right from the wrong,  and properly take car of them, is a skill that Haruka is proud of having.

Fears/weaknesses -

Judgement and Ridicule: It's no secret that Haruka has had to force down a lot of sadness and ridicule from others, but even when she seems cheerful, she's saddened by others who use their abilities to mock her for what she lacks.

Teasing: Teasing is fine when its harmless, but for Haruka its been nothing but trouble when others know of her deafness. Scares when she's walking home, constant ringing in her ear from when other yell just be her side, constant bullying and pushing form others when she could not ground herself, its all subjective, but it still gets to her.

Trivia:

Despite being deaf, with no cure able to be used or found, Haruka is still able to hear, only slightly. Wholesome cannot hear anything, Haruka's. deafness is akin to being underwater, with everything sounding muffled and echoed.

As well, Haruka knows sign language in order to communicate, but can also read lips. A useful skills after having found that most of her. family didn't have the time to learn sign language other then one or two words, it became a natural reflex to rely on. She's also been known to simply text on her phone and show others to make it easier, though it does take some time.

Yeah I'm just giving her one to start off with so as time goes by, she may develop something else.

I have her the ability to create potions and herb infused remedies; does that work?

Do make sure the ability fits within her classes. Potions and such like that is a class with a teacher. She could take it, but he'd have to drop a class she currently has.
