most keyboards are standard, mass produced, easily replaced, a select few are specialised, very exspensive, like the keyboard on a CAD CAM PC.

Instead of replacing when the keys get sticky, or coffee is spilt, its easier to take the keyboard apart, clean the keys and chassis, and rebuild it, saving a hell of a lot of money in the process.

the keyboard i was repairing was a specialised CAD keyboard, had over 500 keys, and i forgot to write out which went where....ouch

Or you could stick in the top rack of your automatic dishwasher, like one of the customers calling my tech support line did to his.  The keyboard did come out sparkling clean.

Hmm, but did it work properly afterwards? With the array of touch-sensitive keys with (to most of us) obscure properties in the upper rows on today's keyboards, and the sensitive circuitry that's under the keys, I would never dare do just that: what if some keys quietly get pushed into a lower position while it's in the dishwasher.

You wouldn't have wanted to clean a Chinese pc keyboard. (yes, they exist, though they don't have, like, three thousand keys).  And still less one of the keyboards used by the designers at the Chinese spaceship construction program.  :D

Actually, the keyboard that came with my machine is supposedly dishwasher-safe.  I have to admit, though, I kinda like popping the keys off and putting them back on.  I always line them up in order so that I don't muck up the non-alphanumeric keys.

I usually pop mine off put them in  bowl with warm soapy water, give it a long vigrous shake, while blowing out the board with air and possibly wiping it out with rubbing alcohol. Then I break out my picture of the keys (usually taken with my phone) and dry each key off before putting them back in.
