Greetings, fellow spellcasters!

The topic of today's lesson is: Colours vs. themes, which is a continuation of the previous lesson about colours.

In the past I used to format headers as [color=brown] (example in bold) and text that I wanted to stand out as [color=navy] (example in normal style).  However, those colours turned out to be illegible for people that prefer to use a dark theme.

I did some testing and came up with a small subset of colours that, in my opinion, work reasonably well in both the default and the dark themes.  The table below contains the colour names in 4 different styles to give you an example how the text will appear when rendered in that colour.  I also added links (which use their own colour unless overridden) for comparison, since using the same colour that is used for links can be confusing.

mediumpurplemediumpurplemediumpurplemediumpurple
dodgerbluedodgerbluedodgerbluedodgerblue
cadetbluecadetbluecadetbluecadetblue
(link)(link)(link)(link)

I posted this table elsewhere to solicit responses, and got the following comments (slightly paraphrased for breivity):

Liam Dale: I believe these 4 look amazing with the October theme: deeppink, fuchsia, dodgerblue, cadetblue.

Syene: I use the pink and gray theme. rosybrown is better than default pink, but still pretty low contrast. hotpink isn't great either.

And the code for the baker's dozen:
[color=rosybrown]rosybrown[/color]
[color=goldenrod]goldenrod[/color]
[color=darkgoldenrod]darkgoldenrod[/color]
[color=orange]orange[/color]
[color=darkorange]darkorange[/color]
[color=tomato]tomato[/color]
[color=orangered]orangered[/color]
[color=deeppink]deeppink[/color]
[color=hotpink]hotpink[/color]
[color=fuchsia]fuchsia[/color]
[color=mediumpurple]mediumpurple[/color]
[color=dodgerblue]dodgerblue[/color]
[color=cadetblue]cadetblue[/color]

Cheers,

And re-posting the table on an even-numbered reply, since backgrounds alternate.

Use stuff, Al. If I have my druthers, the posting part of any theme would be white because when we post pictures, they often have white backgrounds or those of us who work at it have to make the backgrounds transparent.

But anyway, thought I’d help your cause here. I did a screen capture of your fonts and made the background transparent. Then I filled each with the pair of screen colors for each of the themes. Here’s the result. Yeah it’s a big post but the fonts need to be readable against the backgrounds. And yes, both Black & Blue and October use a solid black background that doesn’t alternate.

Feel free to steal this, just building on other’s work.

Greetings, Earthlings of all shapes, colours, genders, and degrees of magical ability!

Today, I would like to briefly revisit the [abbr] tag for an added feature.

Previous posts touched on applying the tag on text and links to provide "hovering" text, but did you know that is can also be applied to images?

And what better to illustrate it than an image of...

The code revealed:
[abbr=HOVER CATS!!!][img]https://i.pinimg.com/originals/e3/94/68/e39468c681ec611acf74b3929499c2c3.gif[/img][/abbr]

Very nice Al! We’ve used images with URLs that open other images when handing out presents. This is nice because one could use the abbr to state ‘click on the image’. Example when I have the time, it’s complex yet cute when done well.

Are you aware of any way to add non-displayed material to a post? There’s times I want to retain something from an earlier post for later use but I can’t find a comment tag anywhere.

Of course there is!

And guess what tag you can use for it :)

Actually, more than one....

[abbr=This is a hidden comment I added to this post.  You cannot see it, but you can quote it][/abbr]
[acronym="acronym" acts the same as "abbr"][/acronym]
[anch=Using an anchor also works][/anch]

The text will not appear in the post, but will be quoted with the rest of the post.  Try it!

The only (other) problem is that each such "comment" takes a line (an empty line, but still), as you can see from the blank space above this.  Putting it at the end of the post alleviates the issue, as is using small font sizes.

For example:

[size=1pt][abbr=Comment goes here][/size][/abbr]

Jaclyn

So on that image inside an image thing. We start with an outside and an inside image.

Put the outside image between URL tags.

[url][img]https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/564c/fu53mrt6agcmjj8zg.jpg[/img][/url]

And set the URL to the inside image you want revealed and voila! With the additional ABBR tag.

[abbr=Open me!][url=https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/d794/aqnjuzn9dczl2dwzg.jpg][img]https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/564c/fu53mrt6agcmjj8zg.jpg[/img][/url][/abbr]

The final image opens in a new window against whatever background happens in the greater scheme of things.

Background: I am on a fake vacation, but very definitely looking into ‘issues’.  My current location which should not be revealed involves fictionally visiting places that are under threat from global warming (that is to say everywhere, but beach areas are one).  While I witness the edge of the ocean creeping closer and higher, I thought it would be nice to offer a greeting of good will.  (For those unaware, in the US there is Thanksgiving (usually on a Thursday; the astute reader will note this is sent on the following day)).

Some (note the word choice) might say that the event of the first Thanksgiving turned out not so hot for Native Americans.  I might join in that statement.

Note, with a few illustrations, I’ve depicted some issues (Native Americans, (listen: it’s my imagination and I can portray as I like), with arrows aimed and flying and, I’m sure ‘compassion’ suggesting to the new folk to maybe hightail it away).

Now, since we’re on a site of imagination, I rather like imagining a general turn toward eco-smartness and moving to tackle difficult issues worldwide, arguing in debate and then eventually moving toward healthful resolutions and solutions.

And since I also enjoy the specific, I like to imagine everyone enjoying their holidays, wherever they may be.  (See immediately below for what I’ve imagined for Al).

One nice tradition in my neck of the woods is to say what one is thankful for: That be each of you!  Happy Thanksgiving!

OK, this one is a little convoluted.
First, we create the top horizontal bar using a solid-colour image stretched to the desired dimensions.
Then we similarly create the left and right vertical bars using the [float=left] and [float=right] tags.
Then we put the text, surrounded by a single-cell table to create a bit of spacing between the borders and the text.
Then we put the bottom horizontal bar, similarly to the top bar above.
And finally, we wrap everything in another single-cell table to prevent the right vertical bar from escaping to the end of the window.

The biggest problem is getting the sizes of the bars just right, and then they may still be off for somebody that uses magnification.
This can be overcome by adding vertical and horizontal padding to the text by placing it in the middle of a 3- or 9-cell table.

And a slight variation:

Brothers of the mine rejoice!
Swing, swing, swing with me
Raise your pick and raise your voice!
Sing, sing, sing with me
Down and down into the deep
Who knows what we'll find beneath?
Diamonds, rubies, gold and more

Very similar to the above, except for using the [float=left] tag instead of an outer surrounding table.
There could be minor visual differences in rendering.

Now, the last thing to mention is the choice of colours.  There is a useful resource here that provides single-colour images that can be used for creating the frame borders.

And for those of you who are curious where I got the song from,

That's it for today.

Happy thanksgiving to all of you!

I have been authorized to provide a Dickensian style Christmas story to Magic Shop patrons.  It has to do with Al’s gift:

(Once upon a time)  There once was this person called Al who got a gift.  (See below).

Creative Super Great Gift For Al!

Well, he received this great Christmas gift, a very specific ‘coupon’ book.  Yes, all he had to do was choose a cookie and low and behold, he got the illustrated cookie promise in RL!

Now, as illustrated immediately below, there was an issue as to whether Al would share his gift.  (The holiday season, don’t you know?).

And yes, you can write the end of this story as you like.  Does Al take the first pick and offer the rest to others, or . . . ?

False Rumor – Illustration (not true!)

On an important note for shoppers, if you want delivery of your gifts ‘day of’ there is an upcharge for this.  Personalized pictures with Santa vary in price depending on size.  Pictures and/or activities with VPs or helpers is negotiable, depending upon service being contemplated. /s/ Steffy, VP Marketing
