To Wake the Sleeping King
« on: June 17, 2018, 02:50:19 AM »
To say it was the end of days, would have been overly dramatic, although it was surely the end of the Kingdom of Welum. Whispers of doom had come for years, tales told of conquering armies to the east but they had never alarms the nobles of the land. But now the enemy is here, flowing over the border. The King’s own brother is dead and the royal army, along with every noble’s retinue the marshal could find, have been broken. The cream of the nobility wiped out or in captivity. It will only be days before the host as reach the gates of the capital and laid siege to the city.

There is no hope.

The priests and priestesses pray in their temples, as the remaining knights and man-at-arms gather the people, their livestock and stores behind the walls, prepared to resist. Maybe their allies in the neighboring kingdoms will finally ride to their aid. Alone, the Loremaster pours over ancient scrolls and runic inscriptions. Even in these final hours, some members of the clergy, find time to mock the mage, who can barely cast a spell of light, which is more than most of those few still learning magic, can do. Although it should be noted, that no miracle of the Gods, have appeared to save them.

But salvation may yet be found in those crumbling tomes.

In the days of old, before the coming of the Gods and the age of Miracles, when magic was strong in the world and the fathers of men worshiped their own ancestors or pagan spirits, great king were laid in the Barrows, when life left them. They were entombed before an alter, in their armor, with weapons in their hands and treasures at their feet. The Mages of yore, would incant long spells, laying curses for those who might plunder and more importantly, weaving their magic, so that the promise each king made, to return when his people most needed him, could be fulfilled.

In the long passages, deep underground, around the chamber of the King, would rest his retainers and household, when they too past into the Halls of the Dead. Each would be wrapped in sorcery, as they were laid in the grave, so that they could answer their King’s call, should he be awoken again and be in need of warriors. While it might not be an army of the dead, a core of fighting men, who could not be killed, would make an army invincible.

As time turned and magic began to fade, this art was lost and the later barrows were simple graves. Yet the magic laid on the tombs of the first Kings of Welum, was strong still. When the Loremaster awoken the King and summoned his council in the middle of the night, he was scoffed at by the Priests. If this magic was so strong, why had not the Kings of old arisen when the country was first invaded? But the old mage had an answer. When the Gods arrived, the old rites had stopped and the attention of the sleeping Kings, had been drawn away from the mortal world.

They would need to perform a new rite, one that was as old as the Barrows themselves and make sacrifice, to awaken the great warrior kings of old. And not just any sacrifice would do, not treasures and animals but it would have to be a human sacrifice. A bride of noble blood or better still, noble blood and new servants, their blood to wake him, their bodies to keep him entertained while in the flesh and to go with him into the Halls of the Dead, when the foe was broken.

This would be the last chance for the Kingdom of Welum, no matter how slim.

So, anyone interested?

I don't have all the details set in stone and I would love some input. I am thinking that the setting for the story would be something along the lines of late medieval, knights in plate armor, stone castles, the whole classic fantasy thing, with the King and warriors being more heavily inspired by Anglo-saxons and the Vikings. The invaders could be other humans or a more high fantasy enemy, like orcs or trolls.

After long arguments, the modern day king agrees to the Loremaster’s plan and orders that a young noble lady or possibly his own niece to be taken into the Barrows, along with a few common serving women and sacrificed on an alter, to wake a dead king. The Loremaster was right about the magic and the rite doesn’t kill the girls (at least not yet) but bring a King to life, to lead his warriors and the remaining knights and nobles of Welum to victory, however long that might take.

Depending on interest, this could be a smaller story, one king, one noble lady and the servants or one king, some of his warriors, the noble lady and the servants.

Or it could be a larger game, if there are more people interested, several kings, several ladies and servants.

Current Cast

Sexmund
Player: IrishWolf

Name: Sexmund the Just

Age: 32

Social Rank: King

Personality: Sexmund well earned his title of Just. His words was always truth and any oath he spoke, was honored. It should also be said, that oath-breakers aroused a great and terrible wroth in the King. More then one of his wars were caused by another king or lord breaking their word to him and when their lands were despoiled, the plunder was dealt out fairly by his own hand, from the lowliest of freemen to the greatest of eoldermen. When matters were brought to him, when he held court, it is said he always listened to both sides and carefully weighted the words spoken by each party. He had a great love of hunting and relished every chance he got to pick up a spear and face down a charging boar or a cornered bear.

Appearance: It was said that Sexmund was a giant among men, although the stories might exaggerate the truth. He was tall, almost by half a head to most, with wide shoulders and a broad chest. His limbs were thick with corded muscle and the tales tell, that he could cleave through horse and man with a stroke of his mighty axe. Even when he grew hoary, after many years of kingship, they say his strength never failed him and it was only in the last days of his life, when he could no longer weld his sword. He carried some heaviness in the stomach, from a love of mead and feasting but never grew fat. He was handsome in the face, even though he held the sternness of a judge in his looks, even when he laughed. His hair was golden, grown long so that it fell around his shoulders and some was bound into braids, hanging just behind his ears. His beard was thick and not grown overly long, so that his foes couldn't grab him in battle by it.

Arms and Armor: His longaxe Fjôrsváfi, the pattern welded sword Hneitir and a seax. He was laid in his grave dressed in a quilted tunic of blue and a hauberk of mail, with his helm of iron and decorated with silver and bronze, upon his head

History: Much of Sexmund's reign as been lost to history but what is know and remember in the old tales, that he was an eoldermen, when King Winfirth died. Winfirth's young son, Turbert, died within days of his father, under strange circumstances. When the crown went to Winfirth's brother Leofwig, Sexmund accused Leofwig of murdering his nephew, nearly causing a civil war. Before warriors could be called to arms, Sexmund volunteered to prove his words true, by undergoing Trial by Cauldron. One of King Winfirth's rings was placed in a cauldron, covered with water, as deep as Sexmund's elbow and brought to a boil. As the water bubbled and frothed, Sexmund looked Leofwig in the eyes and plunged his right hand into the boiling water. He slowly pulled his hand out, showing that he was not scalded or burned and between his fingers was the ring, proving to all the assembled noblemen that he had spoken true. Before anyone could stop him, Leofwig jumped upon Sexmund with drawn knife and the two struggled, as their retainers ran to their aid. As the men reached the pair, there was a loud cry and Leofwig slumped to the ground, his own knife buried in his heart. The other eoldermen and high-reeves, who had gathered to witness the trial, spoke among themselves and offered the crown to Sexmund, for plainly he was favored by the spirit of the old king.

Sexmund would reign for over forty years and nearly to his seventieth winter, he would march to war for the final time. Despite messages came from the Kingdom of Odrein, with whom Welum had alliance for many years and they had proven to be faithful friends, had now been invaded. With his ally sorely pressed, the old king once again raised his banner, called upon the warriors and marched to the sea, where waited the longships. The army sailed away and would return, their ranks diminished but covered in glory. However, their faces were grim, as they returned to their homes, their king was dying. Near to the final battle, Sexmund had been struck in the chest by an arrow, the wicked point piercing his mail and wedging itself in his ribs. The healers had tried but had been unable to remove the iron from his chest and the wound caused the king terrible pain. He did command his army in the last battle however, borne upon a litter, sword still in hand but the return to Welum had been hard and now fever gripped the king. He was carried back to his hall but perished from his wound, only a few days later, leaving his eldest son, Wiglac, as heir.

Isolde
Player: Saika

Name: Isolde Welum

Age: 19

Social Rank: Princess

Personality: Adventurous and free-spirited, she lives in the moment and she acts before she thinks. Her heart is in the right place, but it doesn't
always workout the way she hopes and she is competitive because of her other siblings. She enjoys acting more like a prince rather than a princess, though there are times she enjoys acting feminine.

Appearance: Light brown hair with blonde highlights and amber eyes. Her skin goes from fair to sunkissed from all of her time in the sun which shocks her family who remain fair and pale. Her breasts are not overly large like her sisters, but that might be because she is always active. Her body is slender and is soft and hard in all the right places.

History: Being the youngest of six siblings and is from the fourth wife, Princess Isolde of Welum has always been on the heels of her siblings. Always trying to be like them. Better than them in one way or the other. The sibling rivalry has wrecked havoc on her father during the war and with his sons on the battlefield and marrying off his daughters as fast as he can for allies as he wanted to amass power and land before desperation came into play once the war started. Then when it came to Isolde, she drove her suitors away since the age of 13 and at first it was cute, now it was a nuisance.

She didn't take her studies seriously as she would rather be out playing around. Riding and fighting like she was a man. No man wanted her and upon hearing about the Sleeping King, he believed the Gods have heard his prayers. He will win this war by giving up his youngest daughter. She was on no use anyways and for her, he will just explain that no one else could do it but her. That she will be the one to save them all.

Notable Skills:

Horseback riding and tending to them.

Can whittle and is a damn good archer and her swordplay is fairly decent.

Takes her sewing skills to a new level, she patches up soldiers and towns people that are injured. Thanks to her adventurous nature, she knows her way around plants and how to use them.

Sexual offs: See players link

Vigdisr
Player:bubby

Name: Vigdis (vague meaning = fighting goddess)
Age: 28
Social Rank: Huskarl – First Shield Maiden to Sexmund

Personality: She is a spitfire. She will fight, drink, and cuss right along with the men, but she is most definitely a woman. She will not take shit from anyone. Though she is very capable of killing, she has a compassionate side, though only a few have seen it.

Appearance: Standing at 5'3”, she is small, but strong. Years of sparring with Sexmund and going to war has honed her body; curvaceous but toned. Her hair is white;  when in the sun a glint of pale blonde will show. Eyes of the same silvery steel as Sexmund. Her face belies her true age, her look to be young maid at barely 18.

Arms and Armor: All her weapons and armor were made for her specifically; gifts from her King. Her axe, kept at her waist. Her sword, encased in a custom sheath on her back. Her twin knives, slid within her boots. And her leather armor, engraved with love by Sexmund himself.

History: She does not go by her original name. She barely cares to remember her past life at all. Vague memories of her family are buried deep, even though it was not a horrible existence. The only daughter of a Clan Noble, she was raised with her brothers to fight, and to ride; not really the upbringing of a Lady. Then came a raid, blood and death and submission, and she standing to fight it all off. Her mind has been overpowered with the mere presence of Sexmund. Of his towering form standing over her as she dared to stand to him at the tender age of 17 as he swept through her lands, conquering easily. Of the glint within his steely eyes, the cocky grin beneath blood soaked beard as the slip of a girl stood between him and her family. She does also remember hate.
Oh how she hated for so very long. Her thoughts were filled with a myriad of ways to kill Sexmund after her took her as his prize, back to his kingdom. Even though she had agreed to go with him to keep her family alive, she fought him tooth and nail, balked at his orders, refused to bend even when she was punished for her transgressions. But soon she came to see that he never beat her for merely the sake of doing so. When she shrieked at him and attacked, his response was never rage, but a calm tough love. And when the day came that he offered her a practice sword, and vowed to teach her himself the ways of the Warrior, her existence with King Sexmond changed. She became his progeny; first learning to respect him, and eventually coming to love him. He treated her with respect, teaching her in the same manner he would any of his Warriors, never holding back. She knew pain in those days, but she reveled in it. She learned, she excelled, and she came to stand at his side at his Shield-Maiden, sworn to fight for him.

Rakesh

Player: Juggtacular
Name: Rakesh - Also known as the Black One, and Dread Wolf
Age: 24
Social Rank: Thegn
Personality: Rakesh is a contemplative person, a habit picked up from having to focus on his surroundings and environment since he was little to survive. He watches everyone and everything, plans his every move, thinks about every option and contingency. Even in his every day life, his brain seems hardwired and making sure he knows what is happening around him. This also extends to simply talking to people, as he reads what he can from a person.

Despite this, he gives off the feel of a caged beast. But not one that the house should fear. Instead his aura shows that they would fear unleashing him on even their worst enemy. He is loyal to a fault once his trust is gained, and he would kill 100 men without a second thought if they disrespected his savior. He sees Sexmund as a brother, and would follow any order given without hesitation. He would even welcome death if it meant keeping him safe. He has a kind side as well, a more "human" side.

To those he allies himself with, they find he is quite the joker, and will go out of his way to help if he can. On the battlefield he found true joy, and relished in a good fight. Hunting, war, sparring; anything that pushed him to his limits got the greatest joy out of Rakesh...aside from the female form. That was a strong second, shown by how often he wooed the ladies of the land.

Appearance: The only person said to rival Sexmund in size is Rakesh, and standing nearly seven feet tall, that's easily understandable. He is also covered in well-earned muscle gained from a lifetime of struggle, hardship, and constantly fighting for survival. Atop his head is a "crown" of dreadlocks, while the sides are shaved low. He also has a goatee, kept shaved low as well for the same reason as the other men. A fight is a fight, and in a fight, anything is a handhold.

He'd not die because someone got lucky and yanked his beard in a scrum. His skin is a tanned black from a lifetime on and around the Jikuna Island Nations, the cluster of large landmasses to the south of Welum. On that skin are raised bumps known as "Crocodile Scarring". Each scar represents a kill in battle, and Rakesh has been collecting scars for almost all of his life, to the point where he's running out of space. His eyes are a sharp hazel, and seem to look right through you.

His teeth and nails are filed to points, a tactic done in Jikuna to frighten your enemies, and also to give you a last ditch weapon should your arms be stripped from you. The pain also helps keep his mind sharp.

Arms and Armor: Rakesh's main weapons are a "Machete & Short Spear" named Claw and Fang with the cleaver being used for heavy killing blows and disarming with it's hooked edge, while the spear is used for fast jabs and swipes to get inside his enemies range. He also carries several throwing hatchets, and a warhammer for when he wants to make a point.

He wore an all black animal pelt robe, and light mail. Greaves and Gauntlets covered his shins and ankles as well, with spikes studded throughout for even more ways to attack. As his namesake, his helm is that of a black wolf.

History: Rakesh was royalty once. Back home in Jikuna his father was the High Lord of one of the larger islands. His life was good, until one day when he was four, maybe five. Pirates frequented the waters of Jikuna. It was a land with many ports, resources, and goods due to being a trade hub. However, the force that attacked Rakesh' home was larger than any amassed before it. His people were beaten by surprise and sheer numbers. When the siege was done, his family were in chains.

And one by one, the adults were beheaded in front of him. His sister tried to claw their captors eyes out, and was gutted for her trouble. It left only Rakesh alive, and he was sold into slavery for quite a hefty price. Despite his youth, the man who bought him had him trained in the ways of combat so he could be used as a surprise. No one would expect a child to stab them in the kidney while they're attacking his "father". With nothing left of home, and no way to reclaim what was his, Rakesh lost himself in training. Every night, every day he pushed himself until he was sore and his body didn't want to move.

And he got better, more skilled, more talented; stronger, faster, tougher. By the time he was thirteen, he was fighting grown men and was much larger than other boys his age. This continued on for years, with Rakesh becoming more fearsome and renowned with each victory. Until one day, his Master bit off more than he could chew. He took out a loan and couldn't afford to pay it back. He offered his debtors a slave easily worth ten warriors.

He offered them Rakesh. And so he was handed off once again to another master for whatever use they wanted. This time he ended up in prison, serving his former owners sentence for him. Ironically, the one freedom he felt he had was the fighting pit that had sprung up there. He quickly worked his way to champion, and reigned for some time, until one day ships came to the island where his prison was located. When the building was damaged during the bombardment, a portion of his cell was destroyed, allowing him to slip out to freedom.

His escape was barred by soldiers however. Each of them had a different standard on their shield, and they were all similar enough that he couldn't tell one apart from another. He quickly took down an unwary man and stole his arms. The only way out of the prison was the way the invaders had come, and he still needed a boat. Baring his fangs, Rakesh jumped into the fray, attacking everyone in sight as they were all obstacles to his flight to freedom.

He fought like a man possessed, and slew several men before he found himself surrounded. He took down two more before he saw more blades than open space around him. He gave up and prepared to embrace death. Her sweet kiss never touched his lips. Instead, he was taken back to the home of the invaders. He was in chains, but he was treated well and fairly.

His home had bars over the door, but he was comfortable. Over time he came to understand the foreigners, and after living freely among them he was offered passage home. He and his saviors lived on opposite sides of the world though, so none of their maps matched. It would be impossible to find Jikuna. After hearing his story, King Sexmund recognized Rakesh' lineage, as well as his prowess in combat. They were enough for the King to offer him a place in his retinue, as one of his trusted warriors.

*plants flag* Interested!

I am good with human enemies, but don't mind a high fantasy one where orcs have banded together after all the years of suppression. Gathering allies and dark magics they wage war with man so they can show them their justice.

Well I will edit my reply since my phone and I were dyslexic in spelling haha

But I wouldn't mind playing a lesser noble woman of sorts and if possible, can fight? XD Daddy always wanted a boy, but he was cursed with girls instead.

Now there is an interesting possibility.

I would think someone coming from a very Anglo-Saxon/Viking type society, would be more accepting of a woman warrior, a shield-maiden one might say, then a chivalric knight. It might even be ironic that in order for her to find a place she's comfortable being herself, her country would be thrown to the very edge of destruction and her being chosen as a sacrifice, hoping it would awaken a dead king and his warriors from the sagas.

I like it! Take the youngest that has nothing to offer on marriage and get rid of her as a sacrifice. It's a "noble deed that needs to be done" but also the family believes that this act of good will will give them something in return.

I've got a character idea. A warrior from the Dark Continent who was taken captive when his village/city/country was attacked. Or maybe a pirate or seafaring someone. In the process though he took down so many of Sexmunds warriors that it took exhaustion and sheer numbers to finally subdue him. His skill and bravery impressed the King and he offered him a place in his court as maybe his champion after his period of coming to accept his situation.

Still plenty of room Vonandi.

Juggtacular, another long time no story, I hope things have been well with you. And I rather like that idea. Maybe a nearby kingdom to Welum, is well known for being explorers and raiders, their ships traveling off the corners of the map and drawing it anew. Sexmund makes a treaty with them but after a few years, it is broken and he invades. While storming one of their strongholds, a third party enters the battle. A prisoner uses the chaos of the attack to free himself but finds that once he is free, he is surrounded by men, who all look alike and each man has his own design on his shield, so it would be impossible for an outsider to tell them apart. So instead, he jumps into the fray, fighting everyone.

At first, Sexmund and his warriors thinks he's some sort of devil in league with the enemy but once he is brought down, they find him but a man and not a warrior, at least in service to their enemy, as he has no armor and bares the signs of captivity. Sexmund, impressed spares the man's life and at first, once the war is done, tries to return him to his own country. But even once they can talk to one another, its impossible to tell where the stranger is from, based on the maps they have. So instead, he offers the stranger a place among his retinue

WIP

Irish, darlin'. Long time!  >:)

Interest peaked, but I'm off to work for the night. You know what turns my crank character wise, so if you might have an idea where my sort of awesomeness might fit in, PM me! I'll check back in tomorrow and re-read things.

Bubby! Long time indeed. I seem to be saying that a lot in this thread, lol. PM sent.

Saika, Princess Isolde is looking good and I have added her to the current cast, which is now on the first post. If you make any more edits, I will keep her updated.

Speaking of updated, I have almost finished my king of old. I will be leaving most of his history blank at this point. Hopefully we'll get a retainer or two, who will help to fill out the deeds and stories of the dead.

Name: Ulric
Age: (these men, when returning from the halls of the dead, will be restored to when they were at their best in life)
Social Rank: huskarl
Personality: He is a sweet, kind, and gentle young man.
Appearance:  Curly red hair covers his head, and a short, scruffy beard covers his face. HIs eyes are an ocean blue, and a scar runs along his nose. He has a broad, muscular build, and he stands tall at 6’2”. He dresses fairly simply, despite his noble lineage - when not adventuring, he wears a simple tunic, trousers, boots, and a cloak.

Arms and Armor: Chain mail and a longsword and axe.
History: Ulric was born in the small city of Riverton, a small city located, unsurprisingly, on a river. He was the second son of the lord and lady of the city, having an older brother, and two younger twins - a brother and a sister. His childhood, while peaceful, was often filled with stories of the old kings, of their magic and the city. Ulric was fascinated with these stories, and when he first saw some knights of the Warriors of Sunlight, he decided to join the order, feeling incredibly lucky to join an order related to Lord Gwyn himself.

It was there that he met Aelred, a young knight in the order - a man of 20 years. The two quickly developed a friendship that turned romantic. Eventually, Aelred would propose to the other knight, and the two would marry in a small ceremony at the keep Ulric’s father ruled from.
