Pronouns and the Legate Group
« on: May 24, 2018, 03:29:29 pm »
There has recently been a bit of confusion about the Legate Group - what it is, and how to handle matters of gendering regarding members in that group.

The Legate group is for people who have not chosen to reveal their gender.  Full stop.  We ask in the Questionnaire if a new member wishes to reveal their gender for this reason.  Some may not think that it's germane to online interactions.  Some may not wish to be stereotyped into a particular role based on their title.

Whatever their reason for entering the Legate group, it is important to respect that decision.  While asking for pronouns is an appropriate and polite way to avoid misgendering someone in the Liege Group, it is not a question that is appropriate to the Legate Group.  Using the singular 'they' construct (as you would if you had no clue what gender an individual is - 'Someone called, but they didn't leave a message') is perfectly acceptable and not offensive.  If a Legate wants you to use a preferred pronoun, it is their privilege to bestow.

Thank you,
