The story begins in a smoky speak-easy catering the very best of New Yorks upscale clientèle. Mobsters and madams, rum runners and fat politicians. The booze is decent, the atmosphere is sublime but the music is what draws the crowd in every time.

The Opal Ballroom is a successful nightspot with some trouble on it's hands. Two rival gangs are vying for partnership and the bids are becoming heated. Neither outfit wants to shoot the place out as that would be bad for business, the nature of the establishment is one of class. The current owner is a practical wizard at avoiding raids.
Much of the Opals fame comes from her superb entertainment, specifically Portia Cannen. (Played be yours truly.) She has a voice that many call memorizing and still more refer to as hypnotic. She seems to have the power to make patrons dance or weep depending on the tenor of her song. While this is good for business it is not so good for her safety. One of the gangs has got the idea of winning the songstress over. If she'll chose sides than the deals done.
In order to 'convince' her that signing a deal with a puppet record company is in her best interests the Murphy gang dispatches its cruelest, most ruthless gun they have. (Played by yours, truly.) He's got a record of shooting first and never asking questions and though he's a beautiful specimen of a man, his eyes and skin are as cold as ice. He intends to shake the girl up, but her song stops him in his tracks. Upon seeing the young woman the thug begins to feel incessant urges, and a fondness for her that he can't explain.
