Rest in Peace, Stephen
« on: March 14, 2018, 12:40:12 AM »
Stephen Hawking has passed away at the age of 76.

I read his book as a young child - not even a teenager. He mentioned something that struck me. I may be paraphrasing a bit:

"I thought about this as I was getting dressed. Which takes me quite awhile, so I had a long time to think."

It may be the bias of the moment, but I can't think of another line from another author that hit me quite like this.

Rest in peace, Professor Hawking.

I was startled when I read that post and had to quickly Google to check for other sources...

Rest in peace, Stephen Hawking.

I believe that at some point he said he felt fortunate that he didn't suffer from a serious affliction, i.e. one which would hinder his ability to think. I recall this from a fairly recent speech of his, dating back no further than a decade. He was still a student when first diagnosed, and was encouraged to wrap up his work and tie any loose ends of his soon-to-be-over life. The fact that he lived on for over half a century, with purpose and many accomplishments, should be an inspiration to everyone.

Enjoy blissful oblivion.

I read his A Brief History of Time in elementary school and that was my first real encounter with modern physics and cosmology, and it gave me the fascination I have had with it ever since. I learned quite a bit more of quantum mechanics when I got into electronics engineering, and always had his book in the back of my mind when I finally got to the gory details behind some of the stuff that he first introduced me all those years ago. Rest in peace, Stephen.

I read A Brief History of Time in college--a Western Cultural Heritage class, and the second to last lesson in that class talked about Stephen's social impact on the world.

I also remember a man so phenomenal he portrayed himself on Star Trek: the Next Generation, and clearly was enjoying himself.

   You'll be missed, Stephen.

Indeed the loss of such an inspiring man in our time diminishes us, but only for a time. For as long we speak of him with fire in our hearts and thunder in our words. He will never truly be gone.

Rest in Peace Steven Hawking may the winds carry you on to greater heights then can be dreamed.

I'm in shock, honestly. I have always been interested in science and physics and stuff, and he was always one of those people I hoped to meet one day. And now I never will.

I'll admit, I'm still crying. I'm probably going to be bursting into tears a lot over the next few days. I know the world got a lot more time with him than anybody expected, but it still feels like it was too soon. A bright star has gone out, and all I can do is stare at the empty void where it used to be and despair. I couldn't imagine a world without him, and now that it's here ... I just don't know how to respond.

Thank you for everything, Stephen. Rest in peace.

When ever I felt that my life was difficult (thanks a lot, Depression), just thinking about what Stephen Hawking went through, and what he was capable of doing, put it into perspective. His work has always been something of interest to me, and I am greatly saddened at his passing. But given his physical condition, he had a good length of time on this earth, and his intellectual legacy will live on for many years to come.

Rest in peace, Dr Hawking. You have earned it, and then some.

In a thousand years' time, people will still be talking about Hawking Radiation from black holes.  It will be better understood, but it will still carry his name.  Those physicists will probably look back and wonder how in the world he managed to work it out when science was still so limited.

Rest in peace - you were always going to be ahead of your time, regardless of the one into which you were born.

This is... tragic. I knew seldom anything about him other than that he was such an inspirational mind. He was a wonderful man to even fight against his paralysis and ailments through any ways he could. Hawking surely was a strong and wise man, both in the worlds of science and of living.

May his spirit and his family find peace in this grievous time.
