PM Archiving

When browsing through the messaging system I did not see an option for anything like this, but I may have overlooked it. Basically what I am experiencing is browser lag in one of the conversations in my PM box, which appears to be due to the length of that conversation and the page is loading all of the messages. The browser lag fades the moment I go into a reply, or in any other conversation. If not archiving, is there another solution to this when dealing with lengthy message chains? Or is the key to just change message chains in extended conversations?

There isn't currently an archive function for PMs, no. You may have hit on the most straightforward solution with your notion of simply continuing the exchange but starting a brand new message rather than replying to an existing one. I don't use labels myself but judicious labeling might help keep very long exchanges organized if you have to break them into several parts.
