The Best of Blydad
« on: December 07, 2017, 07:41:53 PM »
I have been told that this warrants its own thread. <_<

Edit:

For those unaware, 'Blydad' is the moniker I use to refer to my RL father, who I sometimes quote here on E when he does something amusing. Or poignant. People seemed to really like the occasional exchanges I posted of him elsewhere on Elliquiy, so I made this dedicated thread to share things he says.

So anyways, I will periodically update with small talks Blydad and I have. If you are curious what those are like,
this
Blydad: you ever just wake up and have a dad moment
Me: ...
Me: *has no kids, never will have kids*
Me: ...no?
Blydad: I am overwhelmed by the urge to make puns
Me: please no
Blydad: I thought about this one because you went to the dentist last week
Me: please noooo
Blydad: "What time do you go to the dentist"
Me: ...
Blydad: TOOTH HURTY
Me: *sighs*
and
this
Blydad: You ever get the urge to just sing along with music you don't know the lyrics to
Me: All the time
Blydad: so you end up just sounding like NANANANALLLLLAAAAARRRAAAALOOOOOOVE or whatever
Blydad: and then people hear you
Blydad: and you have to either own what you did
Blydad: or try to pretend it didn't happen
Me: who heard you
Blydad: elders at the church
Me: What were you singing
Blydad: I don't want to say
Me: ....I have to know.
Blydad: *whispers* something by Lady Gaga I think
Me: Why were you singing anything by Lady Gaga in a church?
Blydad: Look don't you think I'm questioning my life choices enough now already?
are good examples.

*takes a seat in the front pew in anticipation*

I am here, awaiting the next reading of the Wisdom of Blydad, such that we may shed his Light far and wide, and illuminate the darkness that is the despairs of life.

For context, we had an internet outage yesterday that lasted roughly 30 minutes or so.

Blydad: the internet is down
Me: Yep
Blydad: God I might actually have to do something now
Me: ...you say that like it's a bad thing
Blydad: I don't want to adult
Me: You are 66 years old
Blydad: ...
Blydad: ...
Blydad: I'm sorry, did you say something
Blydad: Because I AM SIXTY SIX YEARS YOUNG
Me: *sighs*
Blydad: *touches his laptop*
Blydad: Fix it for me, son
Me: It's outside of our control. AT&T has to do it
Blydad: I'm going to call AT&T

*ten minutes later once Blydad screams his way past the automated system*

Blydad: *talking to a customer service rep*
Blydad:  Hi, is this a human? I am a loyal AT&T customer and my internet is down. Please get it back up so I can have an excuse not to mop my floor again.

I am very pleased there is finally a Blydad appreciation thread.

Also, I'd just like to imagine, in a small corner of the cubicle maze at the AT&T call centre, a group of (human) customer service reps giggle and go back to their lives enriched by their interaction with Blydad.

I'm straight, but that man does have something going for him, that's for sure.

Aside from that, I love the series.

Bit of Trivia for you - the name of each episode is in the episode's dialog, most cases spoken by Lucifer.

Blydad is pretty straight, I think, but he gets celebrity crushes really bad sometimes. (He's got lady celebrity crushes, too, but he never makes witty/humorous dialogue about them. He just sighs forlornly and mumbles about how if he could do life over again he'd try to be an actor so he could meet and marry Angelina Jolie)

He's made it super clear he'd marry Morgan Freeman, sexuality aside, just because he likes Morgan Freeman's voice, which he feels is the epitome of class and suaveness.

Bit of Trivia for you - the name of each episode is in the episode's dialog, most cases spoken by Lucifer.

I didn't know this, thank you!  :D

Blydad: question
Me: okay
Blydad: so you are a transman
Me: yes
Blydad: so are you saying
Blydad: that when I was disappointed that I didn't get a son all those years ago
Blydad: that I was actually wrong
Blydad: and if I'd only waited and listened a bit more
Blydad: that I would have figured that out sooner
Blydad: and was actually just disappointed for no reason?
Me: .....yes, pretty much
Blydad: huh
Me: you're a good dad, dad.
Blydad: well of course I am
Blydad: level 100 in the class of Dad
Blydad: I roll all the best dice
Blydad: and the RNG loves me
Blydad: I draw the right card in the right moment
Blydad: and....and....
Blydad: I have run out of game metaphors
Blydad: because I don't play enough games
Blydad: help

.....this both made me laugh and was just super affirming for me as a person.

According to Blythe's continuing The Adventures of Blydad, last year he was made aware he had fans:

The man needs a book deal and a biopic, played by Sean Connery ;)

If it's a DIY thing, you can get fairly inexpensive with a men's undershirt and fabric paints.  Or most craft stores have a t-shirt section with plain-colored shirts and iron-on letters.   (Or fabric markers.)

However, we should be certain that Blythe would be okay with this before snapping selfies.

On a more amusing note, got Blydad into listening to the Night Vale podcast properly; he's starting from episode 1 today rather than just catching random bits of it as I listen.

some choice comments from him so far

Quote
Blydad: ...
Blydad: wtf is going on in this podcast
Blydad: I don't understand but I like it
Blydad: it reminds me of radio shows
Blydad: and I love radio shows

Quote
Blydad: that man's voice
Blydad: is like butter
Blydad: I shall marry it

Quote
Blydad: are they saying if I let my children play in the scrublands they will be kidnapped by strange helicopters
Blydad: go play in some scrublands and tell me if you see helicopters son
Me: I am 28 and a hermit, I'm not going outside
Blydad: Exercise is good for you. And you are never too old to be kidnapped by a strange helicopter

Quote
Blydad: goddamn it, he likes Carlos
Blydad: my love is forever unrequited

I had a somewhat scary thought. I am old enough to have offspring as old as Bly, so being adopted by Blydad would not really work.

So, I guess I'll just have to settle with being Blydad's younger brother... by adoption. Which would make me a Blyuncle?

Blydad: I'm lazy.
Me: Why do you say that?
Blydad: So I was dreaming.
Blydad: And I dreamed my friend offered me some construction work
Blydad: You know the guy, the guy I do painting for? The one who I actually procrastinated about already and was supposed to finish painting his barn?
Blydad: Well in this dream he offered me work
Blydad: And I said, "I can't right now"
Blydad: He asked why.
Blydad: "I'm too lazy" was what I told him.
Me: So...you're saying you think you're so lazy that you don't even want to work in your dreams?
Blydad: Yes.
Me: Well, today was payday; you did do some adulting today. That's not lazy.
Blydad: If you think about it, actually I made you do all my adulting today. I just drove you places because you didn't want to drive.
Me: ...
Blydad: God, this talk of laziness is exhausting,
Blydad: I'm going to go take a nap.

I was eating a biscuit (or what Americans would call a cookie) while reading this, and I almost spat out chewed up crumbs all over my laptop while laughing.

A rare exchange featuring Bly-Sis!

Bly-Sis: I'm going to help y'all clean the old place up since I'm visiting for a while!
Blydad: We did clean, I know we did.
Bly-Sis: *meaningful judgemental look*
Bly-Sis: *draws 'Wash Me' on a bookshelf*
Bly-Sis: Cleaning includes dusting, dad.
Blydad: ...no.
Bly-Sis: *getting out a duster*
Bly-Sis: Yes.
Blydad: I hate dusting. It always makes me feel like one of those maids in the little dresses waving about a fluffy duster.
Bly-Sis: ...
Me: ...
Bly-Sis: I am one million percent sure that you are overreacting to dusting, dad.
Blydad: *sits in his chair with a grumpy looking expression*
Blydad: Not gonna dust. I'm an adult and that means I can choose when to adult and I choose not to.
Bly-Sis: *dusts the bookshelf*
Blydad: No, no, c'mon, you don't have to do that, you are our guest.
Bly-Sis: I think I just destroyed a small civilization. Yikes. Like, most of the house seems fine but I think you two never really think about shelves and corners. You two are going to learn how to dust things properly before I leave.
Bly-Sis: *meaningfully looks at me*
Bly-Sis: And by 'you two' I mean you, because dad is pointedly ignoring me right now.
Blydad: *literally puts his fingers in his ears*
Blydad: LALALA NOT LISTENING LALALA NOT FUCKING ADULTING TODAY BECAUSE MY ARTHRITIS SAYS SO LALALA
Me: ...okay.
Bly-Sis: Is he always like this?
Me: Yes.
Bly-Sis: I missed being home. It's so nice that dad never changes. Don't forget behind the bookshelf; you have to dust there, too. Just because you don't always look at it doesn't mean it doesn't always exist.

Blydad and Bly-Sis had an incredibly poignant conversation before she went home today, and I wanted to share it. This is a different tone than earlier sharing, but I really feel like it was worth sharing. I know I won't have the exact conversation quoted, as it went on a bit, but I wanted to share what I recalled of it. This is not on the same 'humorous' tone.

Please note that this one will talk about depression, though nothing scary about it, but I wanted to mention it in case people wanted to pass this one by, just in case. For reference: Blydad and Bly-Sis both have depression.

Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide
Blydad: I want to talk to you about depression before you leave today.
Bly-Sis: Sure, okay dad.
Bly-Sis: What about?
Blydad: I've had this for a really long time.
Blydad: And the little thoughts in the back of your head, the ones that undermine you, that stab a sword into your self-esteem...those don't go away.
Blydad: And when you go through a bad crisis, it does get worse. I know you've been through a lot lately.
Blydad: I wish I could say it gets easier as you get older, but it doesn't.
Bly-Sis: This is...not starting off on a good note, dad.
Blydad: Bear with me.
Blydad: One thing that has always helped me is that I'm a logical person. Emotions lie. The chemicals depression has fucked to hell in my brain lie. But my logic doesn't lie. I've had to learn, over the years, to trust logic instead of my feelings. You learn to live in two different minds about everything: the logical side you know to be true, and the emotional side that you feel to be true. It's very subtle and pervasive. It will sneak up on you.
Blydad: And logic will help you 'notice' depression when it rears up. Do you know how often over the years my depression-thoughts have contradicted each other? It's always a sure sign that I'm in a bad place and a signal I need to look to self-care.
Bly-Sis: I don't understand. I want to, but I don't.
Blydad: Okay, example time.
Blydad: My therapist gave me this as homework once. Been doing it ever since.

[At this juncture, Blydad pulled out a piece of paper dated 'May. 2007' on it. On it was written a variety of really negative statements, such as "I'm stupid.
-12:00 noon" and "I'm always wrong -2:23 p.m." He singled out these two statements in the following exchange.]

Blydad: Just look at these two.
Bly-Sis: Yeah, I think that way all the time. I'm not sure what you're saying.
Blydad: They can't both be right.
Bly-Sis: What?
Blydad: If I'm always wrong...then I'm wrong about being stupid.
Blydad: If I'm stupid, how would I know if I'm always wrong?
Blydad: When I catch myself contradicting myself that way, that's when I know the depression's in full-swing.
Bly-Sis: Okay. But I mean, what do I do about it? It's not easy to get help.
Blydad: Again, bear with me.
Blydad: Sometimes you just have to break the cycle. Sometimes you have to be your own reason to smile, even while you're drowning.
Blydad: So do you remember that year? That month?
Bly-Sis: Wasn't that when [Blythe] graduated high school?

[At this point I gave a cheerful wave but did not intrude on their conversation]

Blydad: Yes, it was. The notes I showed you were written on the day he graduated. Do you remember what I did at his graduation?
Bly-Sis: Oh god. I do. That was hilarious.
Blydad: I ran down from the bleachers and onto the football field where all the graduates were right after the mortarboards got thrown screaming 'YAAAAAAAAAAAAY" and I had one of those sparkler things. I danced on the football field while everyone watched. And people laughed.
Bly-Sis: *laughing* [Blythe] was so embarrassed but he was really happy, because you were the happiest parent there.
Blydad: Why do you think I did that?
Bly-Sis: Honestly, I just thought you were happy.
Blydad: No, I was emotionally drowning. My wife at the time--your mother--had been very horrible to me the night before. I was sad because I was losing my last kid, who was going to move out-of-state the next week. I was still new to retirement and struggling with physical pain from my hands and back.
Blydad: But I also knew that sometimes you have to break the cycle.
Blydad: Do you know how cathartic it is to scream in public? To run and dance and wave? I was in my fifties and I was letting the world know I exist. I was proving that paper wrong, even if I felt ridiculous doing it. No other parent ran out onto the field.
Blydad: But no one yelled at me. No one judged me.
Blydad: And you realize in moments like that...that you are your own worst critic. That in reality, if you had to think of one true negative feeling about yourself, it's this: you feel so strongly that it's a tornado, when really all you needed was to dance a little in the wind. Because sometimes you just have to do something to remind that one traitorous part of you that lies to you that it's wrong. And that you deserve to run onto the field with a sparkler.
Bly-Sis: I didn't even realize you felt that way, dad. You don't normally talk about this stuff...
Blydad: You have the misfortune to have a father with depression. I have not taken the time to talk to you like I should because I was afraid. Because again, that emotional side of me that feels things to be true even when they aren't convinced me I would not be able to help.
Blydad: But that was wrong.
Blydad: Anyways, come on, we're going outside. Trust me, it's worth it.

[At this point, they both went outside and several minutes passed. I was a little concerned, but suddenly, running by the front window, there they were....screaming and waving their arms, circling the house. I went outside to sort of 'follow' them.]

Blydad: IT WORKS SEE. AAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
Bly-Sis: THIS IS RIDICULOUS
Blydad: OH GOD IT IS
Bly-Sis: DAD
Bly-Sis: YOU LOOK GOOFY
Blydad: YOU DO TOO
Bly-Sis: THE NEIGHBORS ARE WATCHING
Blydad: THEIR DOGS ARE WATCHING. THAT'S JUST WEIRD, THEY AREN'T EVEN BARKING.
Bly-Sis: LET'S STOP
Blydad: IT'S NOT A FIELD
Blydad: BUT THIS'LL DO FOR MY LESSON
Blydad: JUST REMEMBER THAT WHEN YOU THINK YOU'RE RUNNING ALONE
Blydad: YOU AREN'T
Blydad: JESUS I'M TOO DAMN OLD TO BE RUNNING OW OW OW
Bly-Sis: *wheezing* AND I'M TOO FAT

[They came back inside and got water at this point. Both of them were laughing really hard and smiling]

Blydad: Anyways, you probably wonder why we had to do that.
Bly-Sis: The really nice statement about not being alone in the end?
Blydad: That? Oh. No.
Blydad: Whenever your negative thoughts overwhelm you
Blydad: I want you to think
Blydad: "One time my dad made me run screaming around the house, and we both knew it was stupid and for this supposedly 'good' lesson about depression, and nothing about me will ever surpass how dumb that felt because the neighbors were watching. Just two grown damn adults doing pointless attention-getting things. If I can do that, I can do this. I can make it."
Bly-Sis: ....I feel weirdly better.
Bly-Sis: You're a good dad, dad.

Hey, all, you might be wondering why the thread has moved. I have chosen to move the thread to the Forum Games/Socializing area so that people are permitted to share these anecdotes about Blydad with non-members without running afoul of rules-issues. I don't post anything over PG-13 anyways since this is just me mentioning things Blydad talks about, so I think this thread shall find it's new home here in Forum Games/Socializing. I'll update the first post to give a bit more context about 'Blydad' for those that have never seen the thread before.

Carry on. :)

I really needed this right now. Thank you, Bythe. Thank you, Bly-dad.

Quote from: Blydad

In psychology, they call this Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and it's pretty much exactly what Blydad said.   Emotions often masquerade as intuition and heavily influence our decision-making processes; when our brain chemistry is out of whack, these emotions can be driven by highly illogical and erratic thoughts.  This is what accounts for many of our logical fallacies, such as Belief Bias, Fundamental Attribution Error, and others.

Anyway, Blydad truly is an amazing dad.

I just joined the Blydad thread, with this post - and just found it and started reading it today. I want you to know that this post is literally the first thing today that helped me start coping with the way I've been feeling. I have so much I hide away inside, and seeing someone trying to so carefully explain his pain to his child(ren) and show how you can tear apart the depression trying to eat you alive... It really helped. In a really small way. Please... teall your dad thank you for me.

I wish my father was even a 10th the man yours was.

Me: Please
Me: Why are you cooking bacon just before 3 a.m.
Me: The smell is keeping me awake
Blydad: Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba
Blydad: BACON
Blydad: BACON
Blydad: Coincidentally
Blydad; the snap crackle and pop are also noises batman makes when punching his foes, I think
Me: This...
Me: ...does not actually answer my question.
Blydad: Look, if you think I need a reason to make bacon, you are wrong.
Me: Why are you up?
Blydad: DID YOU NOT SEE THE BACON. THIS IS WHY I AM UP.
Me: ...can I have some bacon too?
Blydad: No.
Blydad: Now.
Blydad: Go forth and tell the internet of my cruelty. All the bacon is mine.
Me: ...I only ever talk about you on one site, you know.
Blydad: Tell them if they marvel at my cruelty in not sharing bacon, to spite you, I will give them bacon.
Me: How you are going to give bacon to people on the internet?
Blydad: I don't know. I have not thought this plan through. Maybe because I'm feeling fatigued.
Blydad: Maybe because I'm starving to death and only bacon can help.
Me: You forgot to take your sleeping medication, didn't you?
Blydad: Yes.

...

He tried to stuff an entire bacon sandwich into his mouth. And mostly succeeded. What he said afterwards:

Blydad: ...I seem to have eaten it all.
Blydad: Please convey my apologies to the internet.
Me: You're aware the internet has different sites and all, right--? It's not a nebulous entity.
Blydad: No, and I do not care to. I am just competent enough to play videogames, with considerable assistance. The internet frightens me, as well it should.

[He dropped his voice in what I'm fairly convinced was him being absolutely serious at this point]

Blydad: I have heard things about it.

Blydad: I can't get money out of the bank.
Me: Probably because it's closed. ATM's down, too.
Blydad: Why can't I get money out of the bank whenever I want?
Me: That is called 'robbery.'

Me: ...the pretty older church lady you are crushing on & have been crushing on forever would make a great Bonnie.
Blydad: ...that would require me being able to make eye contact without being uncomfortable with my own feelings. Robbing a bank alone would be easier for me than making eye contact with people I care about.
Blydad: I think I will not be a famous bank robber.
Blydad: I shall be a famous pancake maker. Yeah. That's a better and safer plan.
Blydad: Or.
Blydad: You could be a famous pancake maker.

He really needs to make some pancakes for his church lady.  Sharing skills and pancakes is what life is all about. :-)

Or one morning Blythe may wake up to find that Blydad brought the church lady home and spent the night engaged in what my grandmother called "canoodling".  Blythe could make pancakes and they could all sit down for a nice cozy breakfast.

(Context: I forgot to put in headphones and Blydad overheard me listening to this)

Blydad: Why are you listening to Justin Timberlake stripper music?
Me: ...
Me: I have no good reason
Me: Other than I really like it
Blydad: Well, look, those lyrics are terrible
Blydad: I got better lyrics, cooler lyrics
Blydad: *clears throat and sings off-key*
Blydad: Shake that thing
Blydad: But show some class
Blydad: Now be a good son
Blydad: And take out the trash
Me: ...
Me: If I don't go take out the trash in the kitchen are you going to sing more at me?
Blydad: Yes, because I guarantee I've got a second verse in me somewhere.
Me: I'll go take it out. Your dad levels are off the charts right now.
Me: Anything to save me from verse two.
Blydad: I win at adulting right now so much.

Blydad: I had to get up this morning and get bloodwork done, ugh.
Me: Aww.
Blydad: I couldn't have anything to drink or eat for several hours.
Blydad: Do you know how awful it is to do without coffee? Even for a few minutes?
Me: ...without caffeine, yes. Coffee specifically? No.
Blydad: Ugh.
Blydad: I get where they're coming from though.
Blydad: I drink so much coffee...
Blydad: ...that I'm sure there was a legitimate risk of drawing coffee from my veins, not blood.
Me: So you're saying that them asking you not to eat or drink...
Blydad: Is so there's actual blood to draw, I'm sure.
Blydad: Unless they want to test my coffee and tell me how healthy it is.

Blydad really loves Terry Pratchett. A lot. I got started reading Pratchett's stuff because I was in a blah place & Blydad found the Discworld ones in a local library years 'n years ago. <_<

Blydad likes the books with Granny Weatherwax or the Silver Horde the best. ^^

(Context: it's late at night right now and Blydad is actually supposed to take his meds and go to sleep)

Blydad takes his donuts super seriously. From less than twenty minutes ago....

Me: I see you are still awake; you feeling okay, dad?
Blydad: I just
Blydad: really
Blydad: am waiting on the donut shop to open
Me: It's nearly 1 a.m.
Me: You've got at least another 3 hours
Me: You've been up a really long time, too. You should really go to sleep.
Blydad: Once upon a time when you were younger, you stayed up waiting for the donut shop to open because you wanted a box of chocolate donuts.
Blydad: See, and you did that because you got it from me. In this family, we are very willing to do whatever it takes to be the first person through the bakery doors to get the first best donut.
Me: I like donuts as much as the next person, but I mean--
Blydad: Right now, I like those donuts more than I like sleep.
Me: ...did you eat dinner?
Blydad: Nope. Saving room for donuts.
Me: This is a kneejerk reaction to you trying to get donuts yesterday and them being out, isn't it? When they only had the ones I liked?
Blydad: I SWEAR TO GOD AL ISN'T GOING TO BEAT ME THERE THIS TIME AND BUY ALL THE DAMN BOSTON CREME BEFORE I DO
Blydad: THAT SNEAKY S.O.B.
Blydad: HE EVEN KNEW THAT THEY ARE THE ONES I LIKE BEST AND HE KNEW I WAS GOING TO GO BUY THEM THAT VERY DAY.
Me: Dad--
Blydad: THIS IS WAR.

If I ever share any qualities with Ian McKellen I'll be happy.

If I ever share any pastries with McKellen or Stewart I would be pleased.

I'm honestly torn over which is less likely to ever happen haha.

God sharing pastries with Ian McKellen would be amazing.

Blydad when ordering his drink at a restaurant today

Waitress: What would you like to drink
Blydad: Sugar
Waitress: Sweet tea, I'll assume..?
Blydad: ...same thing. One tall cold glass of sugar, please

Me: It's late, why are you still up?
Blydad: Why are you still up?
Me: Touché.
Blydad: The simple answer is that I couldn't sleep.
Me: ....what's the complicated answer?
Blydad: The complicated answer is that even though I am in my 60s and normally not insane, I heard a noise on the window AC unit in my room, convinced myself the room was haunted even though I know there is a 99.99% chance it's raccoons, and now I can't sleep and turned on all the kitchen lights because their dim yellow glow makes me feel safe.
Me: So why are you holding cake?
Blydad: My fear that raccoons or ghosts or raccoon ghosts were in my AC unit made me hungry.
Me: Everything makes you hungry.
Blydad: ....touché.

Hehe. I, too, have had the random fear of nighttime ghost raccoons so I totally get where Blydad is coming from there.
