Larry Flynt goes back to Congress
« on: January 08, 2009, 11:45:36 AM »
I suppose this belongs in the Politics section.  Porn Moguls ask for Bailout

Quote
It's the water cooler story of the day: "Porn industry seeks federal bailout!"

As CNN reported late yesterday, Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and Girls Gone Wild's Joe Francis, in a move that has been effective in generating publicity for both, have vowed to "request that Congress allocate $5 billion for a bailout of the adult entertainment industry."

Flynt spokesman Owen Moogan gave CNN an odd comment explaining the nature of "the take here."

"...everyone and their mother want to be bailed out from the banks to the big three,” he said. “The porn industry has been hurt by the downturn like everyone else and they are going to ask for the $5 billion. Is it the most serious thing in the world? Is it going to make the lives of Americans better if it happens? It is not for them to determine.”

Francis, meanwhile, released a statement in which he said that “the US government should actively support the adult industry's survival and growth, just as it feels the need to support any other industry cherished by the American people."

(AP)
That wasn't the last of the memorable comments. More from Flynt, via CNN:

"People are too depressed to be sexually active," he said. "This is very unhealthy as a nation. Americans can do without cars and such but they cannot do without sex."

"With all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind," he continued in his statement. "It's time for congress to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America. The only way they can do this is by supporting the adult industry and doing it quickly."

As CNN notes, the porn industry is not presently in danger of collapsing.

Porn stars need love too and we should all go out and support our local strippers exotic dancers, STAT.

Go Larry Flynt!

I think all these bailouts are utterly stupid and is it just me who after Obama's speech today do I see billions of dollars about to be pissed away again.

If you ask me, they ought to start jailing these moronic CEO's just for asking for money. Look you stupid sons of bitches, manage your business better and stop whining like little children and maybe you'll get through this recession with some honor.

Whoops, did I mention business and honor in the same sentence? My bad.

I'd like to tell Flynt the same thing I'd like to tell Detroit. STFU and stop panhandling, Detroit can make better cars if it wants to, and the porn industry can make better porn. All the same cliche stuff over and over again.

I read an article about how the sex industry was actually making much more money now, but perhaps it's just the strippers / prostitutes benefiting and not the people who make porn? :P I figured it would be both, but apparently not!

So in other words, it's the live sex or porn that's going strongest. Surprise.

Not that the net is exactly short on porn, but the standard issue stuff is watered down and unimaginative. If I web search for porn it's very specific stuff, a lot of it you just don’t bring up with company over, maybe that's what people are doing more of now...

I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Flynt was doing this more as a statement of how ridiculous the bailouts are than as a serious request for money - although you can bet he wouldn't turn it down if someone offered him a check.  Hustler is not shy about making biting satirical statements.

(Why yes, I read the articles - doesn't everyone?)

As long as he leaves Ron Jeremy at home, I'd even turn on CNN to watch that.

A distinct possibility, I would have more respect for the guy if this were his motive.

*cough* articles...yeah, especially the ones that come in pairs.

*cackle* That is fantastic. "It's not for them to decide what's important to the American people. They need better sex lives!"

Yes, yes, yes. :D

Touche.  He has already been quite the satirist and kicker of sacred cows.
