The Simon Family had been off the grid for 3 whole months, living out in a cabin in the woods. The children were taught survival skills - despite their varied levels of protest - and the family bonded as a whole under the circumstances. The long hike back out, to their car, meant that darkness had fallen as they drove back home, blotting out the familiar sights around them. Arriving home at a late hour, they discovered the power to the house was off - reasoning that the construction workers in their under-development neighborhood had cut the wires. But it was too late to worry about it now - they could deal with it in the morning.

The next morning, all looking forward to taking a hot shower and reconnecting with Facebook and Twitter and the like, was the start of a new era. The power was still out, the grass that should have been cut was long and unkempt. The phone lines were dead and the neighborhood seemed deserted.
